@modellerman - the switch is definitely for the lights. It makes either the right main headlight or left main headlight work, depending on how you set the switch

@maxamelion - well I find it works both ways. The Bachmann class 40 is quite basic compared to say, a Hornby class 50 which is brimming with detail and lights.

@1978tricia Any 6pin DCC chip will make this loco DCC. I used the basic Hornby one but you can use any 6pin decoder.

Great review! What would you recommend I get - this(Virgin Class 57) or the Hornby Pretendolino(virgin charter relief train) & coach pack? Baring in mid that the virgin class 57s are quite hard to get now.

I loved the Thunderbirds as a kid!!! I'm in the USA and model American railways in HO, but I might buy one of these just for that reason!!! If I get one, I'm gonna get a programmable sound decoder and have it say "Thunderbirds are GO!" for the whistle and maybe "F.A.B." for the bell...

If it was possible to open the little thing on the front/back of a pendolino, you'd be able to do one of those drags that the 57's used to do.

if you use peco points they have a much smaller fog usually or just use electro frog . the only peco point that still has a huge frog is the set track curved point and it can be a nightmare for small locos if run at slow speed .

You could get a spare Pendolino driving car and open up the hatch at the front to accomadate a Kadee coupler. I saw this in model rail. You dont need lighting on it.
