Wow Sam, I’ve been watching you for years and I just want to say how proud I am of you because I can’t even imagine how hard of a decision and process this was for you. I am currently a radiation therapy student (soon to be a radiation therapist) and know how common breast cancer is and the BRCA1 gene plays a huge role in the diagnosis and prophylactic surgery is such an amazing option that we have nowadays. Our physical health is so important and as we get older, a lot of us definitely tend to forget about getting annual checkups and that’s something that all of us should definitely take more seriously. She has 2 long scars on her chest and didn't want implants. She is Beautiful and Natural. I'm love my sister so much. She also speaks for the American Breast Cancer Society. Not sure if you'll see this, but I also tested positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation at a young age and had a preventative double mastectomy a couple of years ago. So much of what you said resonated with me, like the feeling of having to get MRIs and be anxious about the results for the next day or so, and feeling lucky that you know so you can take action, but also struggling when it actually came time to get the surgery and having the surgery hanging over your head. I wanted to comment to say I am ~2 years post-op. Even though sometimes I miss my boobs, I am so happy I made this choice. I'm actually pregnant right now, and not having to worry about developing cancer while pregnant when I can't really screen, or getting early breast cancer and not being there for my kids is such a relief. I'm also so grateful I knew about the gene so I could do IVF, test the embryos, and select for BRCA negative embryos to avoid passing it down to the next generation. I'm so happy to hear your sister is doing well and that you have her as a role model - I am an only child and can't imagine how much more tolerable this would have all been if I had emotional company like you! Tnks for posting this and I hope you continue to recover well (aren't drains the worst...?!)!
