Opening up the Silo/Van Dale Silo Unloader/Fixing the Loose Wheel on the International 1066

We are very thankful for the great corn harvest we had last fall because with the dry weather we are opening up the silo to help our pastures have some time to grow back. We have a Van Dale Silo Unloader, but before we can use it, we have to get rid of any moldy corn silage.
Next we are back to fixing the loose wheel on the 1066. We thank all the commenters that helped us figure out we hadn't lost a piece of the rim. We got the wedges cleaned up and Paul helped us get it tightened back up

We truly appreciate the generosity of our viewers.

Love PB Blaster, just had to replace wheel bearing hubs on my pickup truck, couldn't of done it without PB Blaster, I guess maybe if I had a heat wrench but I don't. One thing about farming, you never run out of things to fix. 😂 Thanks for sharing.

Good to see you using real penetrating oil instead of worthless WD40. I was the Armstrong silage unloader at my grandpa’s dairy. Had an old wooden stave silo with no top about the size of your pasture silo. Maybe 30ft instead of 25. Always fun in the winter time to move the snow first then dig through the frozen top crust. Once you got through that the aroma of fresh silage was pretty good. Thanks for stirring up another memory

Growing up on the home farm I can remember forking silage out of the silo by hand. No unloader. Prolly in the mid sixties. Gramp sold out when Vermont mandated bulk tanks. No more shipping milk in cans, A lot of farmers threw in the towel at that time. We went to beef cows, and ran about seventy five Herefords. all square bales then (idiot cubes). You guys do a nice job, especially with your cows. Any farmer that can walk up to his cows out in the pasture is doing things right.

I had a wheel that kept loosening on my 1066 too. What I found was the wedges were up against each other. No matter how much you tighten they won't lock on the axle. I put two layers of flashing between the wedges and the rim and the wheel never loosens now. Also, use a small air hammer to knock the wedges loose. Works like magic. I got one for like $25 at Harbor Freight.

Yeeouch, this triggered a memory: One type of silo has the chute doors designed so that they sit on the lap lip of the door below - all the doors are off and hanging in the chute when empty, and then you stack them from the bottom to close the chute off for silo filling. It was a two man job - the guy on top holding the door while the 2nd guy, below at the top man's feet, locked 'er in. After completion, somehow we noted the the pattern had flipped - meaning that one of the door junctions did not have the proper lap type fit. We found the culprit about half way down this 45 ft silo. Ethical dilemma confronted those two 18 yr olds: leave it or take the entire top half of doors off, flip them and then place them in the correct orientation. We were fairly certain that this orientation had been in place a number of years. Yeeeup, you betchya we corrected it. That was 50 years ago. Yeeup, there be one way to do things down on the farm.

I have a love hate relationship with upright silo's but overall they do a good job. My favorite part of going up was sending things down. Like the plastic you sent down, wooosh it's down. Wish a guy could smell that silage, bet it's great. Congrats on getting the wheel back attached correctly.

The farm I worked on as a young man we had several IH tractors with wheals like that. We were changing spacing several times a year as we changed from potatoes to Sugar beet and back. We made a tool to pull the tire and wheel out on the axel. It was a piece of pipe with a coupler on the end, the coupler would slid over the axel but the pipe would not. we put a small chain through a set of holes in the pipe and around the wheel. A bar was inserted through another set of holes and when turned it twisted the chain and pulled the wheel out.

Here is my memories as a young lad I would say around 10 when the corn was coming in to be blown up in the silo they were in whole stocks bundled with twine. On wagons and would be fed into the the blower to the top of the silo. My job was a tramper all I did was walked around inside the silo trapping it down. I remember the wooden doors being put in as well. Never was around to see how the silage was put down for feed for the cows. I was in school LOL. I don't remember how it was done but I would say by someone climbing up to the top and pitching it down through the doors. Would I be Right???
