I think one of the hardest things that we flute players have to deal with is our third octave. When we play in the high register, our instinct is to make our embouchure smaller and to bring our teeth closer together. Because that helps us to control that upper register.

But I think when you're working on your high register, you need to fight those instincts. The more open your embouchure, the better your tone quality is going to be. When your embouchure is small, you don't have as much resonance in the tone.
It’s counter-intuitive. So, it's hard to fix. But once you fix this, and become a believer, you'll never want to tighten up your embouchure again.
Believe me, it can be fun to play in your third octave. You don't have to be afraid of your high register.

BRILLIANT advice "The only way to go too far is to go too far". That's what practice is about (finding the limits, the border line, & then the 'sweet spot'). Let the instrument RESONATE & do its job. Don't choke it. You are a really good teacher because you make us think. And when we understand, it give us the confidence to play as we hear it. We can even satisfy a Conductor.

This is a great video. I’ve already practiced today using the Trevor Wye Book 1, High Register. I was able to get all the way up to high B, straining a lot less than I had been.

Well, ... I have to say this is exactly where I'm at. I'm largely self taught but having a few lessons recently and this is the lesson I have to learn - not to tighten the embouchure in third octave, so I'm currently in 'screechy-mode' and cant get beyond high A. I'm really, really trying to undo the habit - but you're right its hard, and doesn't feel intuitive at all !

Keep up the hard work! You can get that 3rd octave. Use lots of pressure, relax that embouchure and lift the air stream. Keep the air stream higher for the 3rd octave. You can also experiment with how fast should the air be flowing. All of those ideas in combination will help figure out that 3rd octave. Good luck!

Blow the air down. Not straight down but in a more downward angle. See if that helps.

Hi Angela, awesome video as usual, you know my story ... still waiting for the new Flute to arrive, so it's pretty much useless to force my self in trying to sing like an Angel in the third register with my current Flute, so ... I still have to wait a little while maybe till next week or the week after that, God willing. By the way, the Flute that is arriving is a Yamaha, YFL 222; do you know the instrument?, any of your students have it?, will I be able to make it "Sing like an Angel" (just love that phrase)???, will it respond well in all registers?, please any comment from you will be sooo very much appreciated. Ha! I'm waiting for it to show those numbers as well! :) Yes, I know the Yamaha 222. I like that instrument a lot. It is a solid instrument and will do well for you. It should sing like an angel!

Hi Jorge! You probably have your new flute by now - if so, how are you liking it so far? I currently play a YFL 222 and I think it's a really good flute to start on. It's very well made but I do find that it is a little resistant/difficult (compared to other flutes I've played) and the high register does take some good practice to sing angelically. With that said, it is definitely capable of producing the full three octave range from C4 to C7 (plus a few extra notes). Happy fluting!

You are not alone! First do you take your Eb pinky off on that E? It definitely helps. The next thing that helps is to keep the air stream low - open and low.
