Breathing in the middle of a solo can sometimes be really tricky to do properly. It’s natural to just grab a quick breath that sounds more like a gasp. But with a little practice you can get a full deep breath, even in the middle of a fast passage, and do it quickly and quietly.

This tutorial was absolutely transforming. It worked the moment I picked up my flute. The concept of yawning is brilliant. The air fills up the deepest portion of the lungs effortlessly. I no longer run out, squeeze, turn blue and gasp! Thank you ever so much!

I consider the flute to be a medical device. For me it is because I have asthma, COPD and sleep apnea. I was told to buy a flute and use it to strengthen my lungs. In two weeks when my flute arrives in the mail I will see.

Also I remember my teacher telling me at school that if you cannot control your breathing and or you dont breath correctly you will find it difficult to control your nerves o stage. How righr she was. I did a small gig for some friends last week and i noticed my nerves on the first piece just practicing before starting. I was playing a piece of Italian opera. So I regrouped before starting and took a few deep control breaths. I focused on keeping relaxed. I did ok. Afterwards one of my frienda came up and said that it was beautiful. Made my day. Thanks 😅😅😅

True words, and the technique does work !!!, we just have to practice and also practice to be conscious to be able to do it anytime anywhere (when and where musically possible). Thanks Angela, wonderful advice/teaching as usual, God bless

You're welcome :-) The Flute is AWESOME!, (of course is not a Haynes Flute). It responds so well in all the registers from Pianissimo to Forte (haven't done any Fortissimo yet), of course, I still have to practice a LOT to make it "sing like an Angel" but God willing I'll get there. Angela, just a though, would you please consider making a video on "Difficult Note Transitions"?, what I mean is, for example second register C and C# to second register D, if the Tempo is Fast the note just breaks 8 out of 10 times (my case), if it's slow, well ... I get by, and any other difficult transitions that come to your mind, I know the obvious answer is practice practice and more practice, but since you are an Awesome Teacher and know so much having so much experience, you may have a few tips to help not only me, but also all those who struggle with that technique issue :-)

Excellent, thank you for your videos.I have begun playing flute after 30 years of not touching one, your lessons have brought back much of the methods and teaching I have forgotten ,and has speeded my playing almost to the level I had in 1990. Thank you 💖🎼

Your metaphor is brilliant. "INHALE an ORANGE" & then keep playing...That is a way to instantly OPEN up & then get on with it. Breath out = control. We were taught that, but no one talked about breathing IN. The 'orange' is good. You are a good teacher because you are generous with your knowledge. Thank you.

Hi Anna, yes always practice yawns! Ha! But they do help in setting the throat correctly.

Yes i tried to take a yawning breath. I wanted to yawn. Wierd but true. I opened my throat as if to swallow an orange. I canit now without yawning because I am aware of the effect. I think maybe moving the back of the throat sends a message to brain to gulp in more air. But it really does work and it seem to allow much more air into the body. 😅😅😅😅
