Your OMV series is the best - especially two videos have been lifesavers. I was running an older OMV (3.x) which crashed. Your other video (how to recover from OMV crash) is the lifesaver. I followed it and that got mine up & running - well kind of. But then I installed 6.x - the latest greatest. That video is created for an older version. The interface is somewhat changed from those earlier versions. So it was getting scary as I didn't want to loose any data due to missteps. That is where this video comes in and explains everything for a fresh installation. So thank you. Please do some more OMV videos especially how to setup some useful cron jobs for critical backups, some power saving techniques, Plugins that can be useful etc. TIA.

These mini computers are a blessing ... I just got myself a NUC with the power that used to run a small to medium sized business. Maxed out the RAM, threw a Proxmox on it, TBs of storage via a Thunderbolt 4 connection while the main system runs off a 2TB nvme. And it does everything from cloud, dns, monitoring, nas, antivirus/malware/ads, mail/spam-filtering, web server and so much more. Thanks for the quick refresh to quickly get up and running with OMV.

It took me about 3 hours to follow this 20 minute video. That includes downloading the OMV ISO and burning it to the disk, and formatting the drive. Everything worked. The only departure I made was setting up a user with a login to access the samba share. (I did not leave it open to "guests.") Seriously, the instructions were great. Thanks. I had an old HP desktop with room for 2x3.5 inch hard disks. (one for the system drive, and one for data) I5-4690K with 8GB memory. The drives were getting kinda warm, so I had to install an extra fan.

Jeff, I am at the step to get Docker working but Docker, Settings, Portainer and Yacht do not show up after installing OMV extras It has OMC extras on the left side list but no arrow pointing to the right indicating there are any options under it. It also says"Please install the openmediavault-compose to provide docker functionality within the OMV web interface." I installed it from plugins but the options don't show up under omv-extras like your example shows...

It's not an issue i figured out later. There are no further icons, that's correct in later versions. We have to install WebDav via docker f.e.

I've just thought that I have to upgrade my OMV again, but then found out I have OMV 6 already for a while. Upgrading OMV on SBC usually means reinstalling everything which can be tedious. Glad to see OMV guides again! BTW I found that docker compose is the simplest way to transfer docker containers to new OMV install, maybe small guide on switching to docker compose could be helpful

People, just remember to chose timezone properly. If not and you update you will strugle with errors which will lead to error "failed to export" etc. So do it at very first thing. It's even more important than changing your password ;)

I followed all of the steps up until checking to see if I can edit the data folder (Time: 19:00). However, I get a Destination Folder Access Denied message "You need permission to perform this action." Can anyone offer any guidance?

Verify that u have a proper user with access rights granted, otherwise try to reformat the hard disc partition, because i am into some bugs while the File Systems was not formated proberly! Often it helps to reformat the hard disk and everything is fine. Somehow UUID-Problems, i actually guess!

Been following you since OMV 4 and are now on OMV 6 and it´s been so easy to follow your videos. I have a wish for a videoserie. A setup where we can ask question about OMV 6 and then you answer these qustion in a "WEEKLY UPDATE" or similar. My first question would be. My OMV server has a card reader but how to setup that so I can put in my SD card from my cameras and import from that reader. I have managed to setup it once but then keep asking for that specific card.

Hello Sir, thanks for the explanation on the video, i wanna ask as i explain : I have to make one main shared folder (MAIN) with three subfolders inside (SUB1, SUB2, SUB3) where all users must have read only permission. Inside the subfolder (Ex: SUB1), there are three sub-subfolders and i have to choose three users also of each sub-subfolder that must be able to have read, write and execute permissions. Can we do this on OMV??

Can you do an updated video on using RemoteMount in OMV, you're OMV4 video was rly helpful a few yrs back. I've skipped version5 and finally upgraded to running OMV6 on raspi, though having issues. Remotemount been a great way to backup network shares with rsync.

One issue I ran into: if you're installing to a USB stick it has to be LARGER than your available system RAM. I have 16GB RAM in my machine and tried to install to a 16GB flash drive, it just couldn't get past the partitioning phase. Ordered some 32GB flash drives today and the install went perfectly, that was the only difference.

Great until the very end. Once I set Guest permissions to read/write I cannot write any files/folders to the OMV server. Had this problem but not this bad with v 4.X. A total failure for now.

I don't expose my server to the internet. It is not a good idea. If you want remote access that is "safe" use wireguard.

I want to upgrade from OMV4 to 6. I have to do a clean install, and while I have my data backed up to an external drive. Do I have to format the current drives that are hooked up to my OMV4 system, or will OMV6 recognize the drives and data in the current OMV4 system? My backups are at my parents, so I don't want to go to their place to dig it up and transfer it all to the new OMV6 system. It would be nice if OMV6 will just reconize the current file system of the OMV4 drives that contain my data. I don't have any fancy raid or anything, I just have individual drives. Thank you.

I've installed OMV with 4GB OS disk on Proxmox. Just got an email notice indicating the drive is 90+ % full. I've a blank 3TB WDC passed thru to the same VM. I am sure the passed-thru HDD should not affected the OS drive. Any suggestions?

Hi, can you do file access audit logging on OMV 6? I need a NAS that audits user activity of SMB shares read, write, delete, rename and moved files/folders and provides timestamp, IP address, computer name and username in SMB audit log. I am doing this right now. Proxmox on bare metal. OMV in a VM. Passthrough HDD (not video, although PCIe would be cool). Snapraid and Mergerfs. I am using information from everywhere and an all-in-one guide would be sweet. Side note I am an OMV fan because of Techno Dad and obviously a Techno Dad Life fan!!! Thanks for everything you do Dad. My OMV5 on bare metal was created %100 from resources from Techno Dad. The only issue I ran into with OMV5 was I ran out of storage on my main drive making the server unbootable. I suspect I missed something about where to run dockers.

Proxmox on bare metal, VM OMV6, passthrough each individual drive (probability going to passthrough the sata extender, on the reload) (My SAS card wasn't comparable with my mobo) with mergerfs and snapraid, with an extra drive for dockers. Containers/portainer inside OMV6. I am having issues with the containers seeing the files dl'ed. I image it is a permission issue, been working on it an hour or 2 every once in a while for a few weeks.

you need a corresponding user in the "Setting User Account" Sections, every user (that should be able to mount the shares) has to be part of user-Group or has to be the owner of the Files itself!

I'm looking to rebuild my OMV4 machine with a 'new' one. In doing this, I'm wanting to also do snapshot weekly backups of my OS drive or something similar so that in case of disaster I can reimage and replace. I think I can do this with dd set as a cron job, but is an easier way available? If not, do I need to resize my OS partition so that the dd image is not the full size of the drive (240GB!).

I am struggling to select any devices to set up RAID 5 on Quad SATA hat on a raspberry pi. I have followed the tutorial but when it comes to Software RAID I cannot select any devices. In Software RAID tab "Select the devices that will be used to create the RAID device. Devices connected via USB will not be listed (too unreliable)." None of the 4 HDDs appears when I select it. Can you set up RAID 5 without creating/mounting drives? Whenever I create a drive, it goes through its process, I get the following message - "You have made changes that have not yet been saved. Do you want to discard them?" Do I want to discard them - "No". There is nothing to ask me to "save" changes. If I press "save" again it runs the same process.

RAID only can be established from SATA/IDE Devices! You can't do a RAID with USB-storage!

(ANYONE HELP). I just loaded OMV 6 using a standard 13th Gen intel based motherboard. I loaded wetty then clicked "Open UI". Once at the command prompt I type in "root". The screen goes blank with "reconnect" popping up. I click reconnect and the cycle starts all over. Everything else seems to be working with my install including creating RAID 5 using 3 test HDs.

Hi All, Followed this helpful tutorial but portainer did not launch from the UI. Solution I found online to fix this is follows. run the following in wetty apt install apparmor apparmor-utils auditd restart docker then reinstalling portainer. I removed data and portainer. Then i reinstalled from OMV extras and was then able to access the web UI. Hope this helps. Rob

Solid Explorer on my Android Devices offer a socalled setting SMB Protocol of "SAMBA Version 1 or 2", so head over for setting up Version 2, if possible! On Windows the SMB-Version 1 is obsolete, so please do not use it anymore, because of security concerns!

you can't login from anywhere, because it is set up for the Local Area Network (LAN). Reaching it from mobile phone can be done through Port Forwarding, but it is not trivial. Mobile Data Provider puts you into another Subnet and this public IP differs from the local IP of your NAS, dramatically!

so I was up on OMV 6 and had all my dockers running fine. Somehow my boot drive died, so now I have 2 hard drives with all my Docker folders with lots of media. Is there a way to add thos original drives/folders without starting from scratch by restoring all of the backuped data for hours? I can see all the data with MC and they are still readable.

Yes I see that it was just as easy as that. Guess I was too cautious to go any further. I thought I might have to copy 3tb of files from my USB backup and that would take a bit of time via my network. I did a lot of Googleing and found a nice program I can use called Midnight commander which let's me do an internal disk to disk copy on the OMV server. Went from 40 mbs to 150mbs but thanks to your comment, you gave me the nerve to go further. Thanks

32Bit are not supported but for the Raspberry Pi (ARM-CPU). The underlying OS is mostly a Debian 64Bit, because 32Bit are no longer supported. Please ask more at the Forum of OMV.

so i use linux and setup a nfs share but it said "mount point not found" i was sitting there for 5 minutes, and then i choose smb and it works fine now lol

Disconnect your storage HDD if you're nervous about it. You should have a backup strategy anyway, but physically pulling the cable is way better.

I never have storage drives connected during installation of the OS. Image your current working os drive first before upgrading / fresh install.

I use an m2 as a boot medium. However, this is not recognised as a medium to be installed. So far omv 4 has been running . What can I do ?

You should be able to install OMV6 on this no problem. Post more info to the OMV forums.
