Whoa! This is so much better for newbie (me) - step by step, screen by screen. Much needed and appreciated. I did think of buying ready-made. Money was less the problem, my main stopper was reading how with proprietary gear, you can't swap components in & out. Whereas I have lots of components from various PCs, and so re-use was important to me.

Always good to see OMV improvements that make a good QOL (Quality of Life) improvement. That dashboard issue used to drive me bonkers on a cleared cache or a new browser or a different machine!

🤣 The funniest thing watching your video. It's 11 PM, quiet neighborhood, everyone sleeping, then at 3:46 mark I coincidently was taking a sip of coffee and jumped with the sudden noise, spilled coffee on my shirt in the process, took my headphones off and went looking for the noise. Still puzzled, came back to continue watching then at 7:55 mark you apologized about the noise in the background. 🤣🤣🤣 Great audio setup!!! Love your videos and looking forward to the next one. No headphones 🤣🤣🤣

You have been my go-to guide since I embarked on my OMV journey. I hopped onto the OMV6 train and have recently switched to the new OMV7. It operates quite smoothly on my i5-1135G7. Today, I discovered that I could enable hardware acceleration on my Plex server, as my processor supports Intel Quick Sync. It wasn't a straightforward process-nothing ever is. But after installing the driver, adding the devices to my Plex stack, and enabling TigerLake in the Plex settings, I was thrilled to see a small yet gratifying 'hw' next to the video quality on up-/downscaled videos.

Actually your OMV 4 videos were the reason I also got into self-hosting. Followed lots of your videos and I too preferred OMV 5. And, as said, OMV 6 wasn't good. I actually had to move to plain old Ubuntu Server and haven't looked back since. But, this v7 looks good. Will probably check this out. And, happy to see that you are back on track!

My Chinesium NAS mobo is the CWWK N5105 (also resold as Topton) with 32GB of RAM, so slightly slower than your N6005. I've thoroughly tested it with Debian 12 and up to 8 SATA spinning rust drives and various SSD's, and it appears stable for a NAS OS like OMV or TrueNAS Scale (or Proxmox). Looking for a case, and a Jonsbo N2 would be a good choice, but the price remains stubbornly high at around $150, and I have to buy and SFX PSU. The available NAS PC cases are limited and even more expensive.

Chinese mini-pc's (most are) and custom NAS motherboards use a modified reference AMI BIOS - try F7 to bring up the one-time UEFI boot menu. That often works. Also, I use ventoy for the USB installation. Just copy the iso files to it. So much easier than a drawer full of USB installation drives.

Hi At 8:06, since which version of proxmox, scsi controller defaulted to virtio scsi single instead of virtio scsi. Single option gives you the ability to enable io thread option but it stresses your host more. Also, doesn't installation gives the option to create a raid including more than one boot disks and where is the part where you can configure static your network parameters?

Been using since 5. I think 7 is the best version so far. I think you will find the docker changes weird at first, but I don't even have portainer added. The compose plugin does everything you need and more, I especially like the global env settings, you can also setup backups, it's a lot different to the last time you did a video on it. There's also a kvm plugin and recently a k3s plugin. For me as I use JBOD and prefer docker compose I was very disappointed with Scale, it will be interesting to see how it develops and hopefully less breaking upgrades.

Question: suppose I have 4 hard drives at 10TB’s (each) for data. How many do I need (10TB) for parity under mergerfs? And if I double the data drives?
@DBTechYT
@DBTechYT 4 ай бұрын
ChatGPT, my dude: When using mergerfs for pooling hard drives, it operates differently from RAID systems where parity is a concern. Mergerfs itself does not provide redundancy or parity; it simply combines multiple drives into a single virtual drive. So, if you’re using mergerfs alone, you don’t need to allocate any drives specifically for parity-there’s no built-in mechanism for it. However, if you’re looking for redundancy and parity, you would typically use a RAID setup or a similar solution like ZFS or btrfs, which can handle data protection and parity calculations. For example: 1. RAID 5: Requires one drive's worth of space for parity. With 4 data drives of 10TB each, you’d need 1 additional 10TB drive for parity, leaving you with a total of 30TB usable storage. 2. RAID 6: Requires two drives' worth of space for parity. With 4 data drives of 10TB each, you’d need 2 additional 10TB drives for parity, leaving you with a total of 20TB usable storage. If you double the number of data drives: 1. RAID 5: With 8 data drives of 10TB each, you’d still need 1 additional 10TB drive for parity, leaving you with 70TB usable storage. 2. RAID 6: With 8 data drives of 10TB each, you’d need 2 additional 10TB drives for parity, leaving you with 60TB usable storage. So, if redundancy is your goal, you should choose a RAID setup or another redundancy-focused filesystem rather than relying solely on mergerfs.
@inlandchris1
@inlandchris1 4 ай бұрын
@@DBTechYT that is a nice complete answer! My mistake about mergerfs, no protection. The snap raid is the way to go and I like Raid 6. Thank you for the kind attention

I would like to know what happens if we had OMV6 and it reaches the end of its life, what happens? I can stay in OMV6 indefinitely with security updates, can we migrate from 6 to 7? or I have to start all over again at the risk of losing all my data in the process? I'm wondering this because I currently have a qnap NAS, but I would like when it reaches the end of its life, to switch to a system that I have set up myself.
