In this video we dive into setting up OpenMediaVault 7 from scratch. The video starts with a bit of backstory and my journey with previous versions of OpenMediaVault.
This is going to be a series rather than a single, long video and we'll be breaking down the setup into smaller, more manageable parts across multiple episodes, making it easier for us to follow along.
To get started, we need the OMV7 ISO and either dedicated hardware or a virtual machine. Our guide opts for a virtual machine in Proxmox, ensuring flexibility for different setups. After downloading the ISO and preparing a bootable USB (if using dedicated hardware), we dive into the installation process. Whether in a VM or on dedicated hardware, configuring the BIOS or UEFI to boot from the USB is crucial.
Once the installation kicks off, it's mostly a matter of following prompts-setting a hostname, choosing time zones, and configuring disk and network settings. Patience is key during the installation, which can take some time depending on your setup. Post-installation, accessing the OMV7 dashboard via browser is straightforward, using default login credentials provided during setup.
What sets OMV7 apart from its predecessor (OMV6) is its improved dashboard setup, now stored in the operating system rather than browser storage, a welcome change. Future episodes promise to delve into setting up extras like Docker and network shares, making OMV7 a versatile tool for home servers and NAS setups alike.
Join us as we explore more in this series, and feel free to drop any specific questions or requests in the comments below the video. It's all about making home server setups accessible and enjoyable for everyone interested in self-hosting and managing their digital content.

Always good to see OMV improvements that make a good QOL (Quality of Life) improvement. That dashboard issue used to drive me bonkers on a cleared cache or a new browser or a different machine!

🤣 The funniest thing watching your video. It's 11 PM, quiet neighborhood, everyone sleeping, then at 3:46 mark I coincidently was taking a sip of coffee and jumped with the sudden noise, spilled coffee on my shirt in the process, took my headphones off and went looking for the noise. Still puzzled, came back to continue watching then at 7:55 mark you apologized about the noise in the background. 🤣🤣🤣 Great audio setup!!! Love your videos and looking forward to the next one. No headphones 🤣🤣🤣

Well done. I liked the speed of the video, the intro, and the content of course. You have this down to a fine art. I'm still using OMV (7) on a Pi4/SSD combo for the odd thing/test bed/NAS so was interested in this.

I actually went through this process myself a few months ago, your older OMV content was still valuable. Looking forward to the rest of this series. Interested to know if anyone else runs into dhcp issues during install.

Great into to OMV 7. I have been running it for a good while now and it's been rock solid. NAS install and config is a GREAT first home lab project for people just getting started. It was one of my first projects back in the FreeNAS 0.x days.

I really care a lot for the intros you make! That's one of the most important things that separate you from the rest. I may not really know what product you are going to talk about. But your intros allow us to know whether it is something I would be interested in, or get back to this later. :)

Thank you so much for your comment! I really appreciate you!! My intention with the intros is basically what you said. I want to give my thoughts on the project before I get into the project itself so people can know what they're getting into. But I get a lot of comments like "You talk too much" and that sort of thing. Obviously it hasn't changed how much I talk, but now people can't complain about it as much lol

Actually your OMV 4 videos were the reason I also got into self-hosting. Followed lots of your videos and I too preferred OMV 5. And, as said, OMV 6 wasn't good. I actually had to move to plain old Ubuntu Server and haven't looked back since. But, this v7 looks good. Will probably check this out. And, happy to see that you are back on track!

Been using since 5. I think 7 is the best version so far. I think you will find the docker changes weird at first, but I don't even have portainer added. The compose plugin does everything you need and more, I especially like the global env settings, you can also setup backups, it's a lot different to the last time you did a video on it. There's also a kvm plugin and recently a k3s plugin. For me as I use JBOD and prefer docker compose I was very disappointed with Scale, it will be interesting to see how it develops and hopefully less breaking upgrades.

A very good, comprehensive start to the guide. Though the audio during the Basic VM Setup might need to be massaged, it sounds like something is beeping in the background and causing a lot of noise through that section of the video.

thanks for the comment. I've answered the question about upgrading from 6 to 7 a few times already on this video. I don't have 6 installed because of how much I hated it. Also, I don't want to deal with the comments that will 100% happen like, "YOU RUINED MY SERVER BECAUSE OF THIS VIDEO". I've received a LOT of comments from people who can't follow instructions or who think that THEY don't need to run backups of their stuff before taking on a task like that. There are forum posts available out there that have instructions for those who want to do the upgrade.

Hi At 8:06, since which version of proxmox, scsi controller defaulted to virtio scsi single instead of virtio scsi. Single option gives you the ability to enable io thread option but it stresses your host more. Also, doesn't installation gives the option to create a raid including more than one boot disks and where is the part where you can configure static your network parameters?

Hi David, loved the video and looking forward to the second one. I do have one question. I run both a Raspberry Pi using Raspbian a NAS and TrueNAS Scale. What's interesting is that the Pi doesn't constantly spin the hdds. Truenas has them constantly going. Can you tell me if OMV is going to be like the Pi or Truenas? Many thanks.

I would like to know what happens if we had OMV6 and it reaches the end of its life, what happens? I can stay in OMV6 indefinitely with security updates, can we migrate from 6 to 7? or I have to start all over again at the risk of losing all my data in the process? I'm wondering this because I currently have a qnap NAS, but I would like when it reaches the end of its life, to switch to a system that I have set up myself.
