For months now I've been exploring ways to connect remotely back to my home lab data centre when I am traveling and in that time I have watched tens of other videos on everything from VPN solutions, VDI, private cloud, cloudflare stuff and a whole host of others. Then I remembered the Spacerex videos I used when I set up my Synology NAS and how clear, concise and informative they were. I looked on my NAS to see if there was a VPN solution and sure enough there was, I immediately thought you had to have a video and thank goodness you had one. The video was simple straightforward and walked through everything amazingly well. In my career I've made a ton of how to guides, videos and hosted way to many webinars and speaking sessions, I'll say KUDOS to you for the work your putting out. Keep it going, amazing work. Thanks, again and again.

I'll have to say, this is the best tutorial on OpenVPN I've seen. I've followed others but have always had the feeling something was missing. Which turned out to be the static ip on the router. Luckily my isp's router let me set it up. Thank you for your tutorials as they are so easy to follow.

Great tutorial for setting up an OpenVPN server in a Synology NAS. One additional hint that provided me headache for some days is to check that the NAS firewall settings are also applied for the VPN interface and not only for the “default” LAN. I always had a VPN connection, also from outside my network, but this silly mistake prevented me from entering all other network devices.

Thanks for sharing this! I hadn't thought that the Synology Firewall was also applying to the VPN... but it makes sense. I wasn't able to connect with anything else on the VPN network from my clients until I opened up the Firewall.

Nice. I was missing the static route concept to get back to vpn clients explained at 12mn. Very simple and clearly explained, whereas other folks seem to indicate that site to site vpn is needed for that. On fact, ont at all. Thanks

Dude, you are the man! You had some great tips that other tutorials totally missed, like auto setup of port forwarding, static IPs and IP routing! I clicked some ads so I hope you get some revenue. One thing you may have missed is configuring the client software to point to the DNS server on the VPN, and also enabling full tunnel mode, but it wasn't too hard to figure out in the end. I also kinda wonder about security of this setup, but perhaps beyond the scope of this video. I believe the compression option is insecure, as well as a couple other things. Anyway, this is very valuable info, thank you!

Hello, I don't have to possibility to configure "static route" within my Google Nest Router but I think I got a workaround for all of us in that case: add the route within the exported open vpn configuration file. To to this simply edit the downloaded "open vpn configuration" file with any text editor and add "route 10.8.0.0 255.255.255.0" on any line of your choice. Reload the configuration file it was already done and you should be ready to access your network lan devices as expected

I like to set up DHCP with reservations for known devices. This way if there is a conflict or some sort of glitch or conflict the devices will still grab an IP and will be accessible. Just look at the "Attached Devices" in your router to find the new IP address and you can see what grabbed the other.

Is there an advantage to setting up VPN between these two or just use the QuickConnect as recommended in the other video? The first NAS was a Synology "j" class machine and a huge mistake as a NAS Newbie. However, as it is really only useful for Data Storage, it will make a perfect, albeit, expensive, off site backup. Great video, follow-up, previously, I connected to my server locally using just the name of the server. In this example, let's pretend my server was called "Kaplan". Since I'm on windows, I'd do the following Network --> Map a New Drive then I'd type: \\kaplan\example When local, I could connect, however, over openVPN, I lost that ability. Great tutorial BTW. one more question? If we're only using the VPN to remote back into the server, then should we establish a certificate for local access as well? Whenever I connect and browse, I'm doing it locally, so how do I have a "local network" certificate SSL?

Your videos have been GREAT helping me setup a NAS for my client. One big question I have is about above VPN video: does a different config file need setup for each user? Here is my deal: I created a test user (user1) with access to a private folder...accesses that folder just fine. THEN I created another user (let's say user2) and did NOT give him access to this private folder, I dragged the same config file to OpenVPN and created another profile with user2 credentials, signs in just fine, in OpenVPN, its shows user2 connected -but on the Synology desktop it still shows user1 as connected! AND YES, user2 can access the private folder -I do not want that of course. So again does this mean I need to export a NEW configuration file specifically for user2 so he doesn't have access to folders he shouldn't? Thanks to anyone that can chime in

It just depends on how secure the protocol is that you are on! VPNs are very strong so ok to open up

Hi, this is a GREAT tuturial. I installed it with DSM 6.x.x and it worked great. Than I upgraded to DSM 7 and ........:(. OpeneVPN connect opens with bits in and out so there seems to be a connection to my Synology 720+ but 'Server can't be found'. I hope you can point me in the right direction. Thank you!

You can add the following to get rid of the certificate warning which you click thru to the VPNconfig text file, right at the end i.e before certstart client-cert-not-required

Dear SpaceRex, thank you for your perfect and clear guide! I have a question: following these steps, I surf the Internet with the Public IP Address of my VPN-connected device, is there a way to surf the Internet with the Public IP Address of my VPN server (which is actually the Public IP Address of my fixed line ISP?). Thank you in advance, Valerio.
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 2 жыл бұрын
If you are talking about using the public IP where the Synology is then yes. You will want to disable split tunneling in your config. This will route all traffic through the VPN, not just local

Can I use the VPN as I would use a standard VPN service like SurfShark/Express/Nord etc If I set up my Synology VPN in my home, then go traveling, can I use the VPN to bypass the restrictions of whatever country I'm in?
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you could. Plus you would have the advantage that you would never get IP banned as it’s your real house’s IP

This makes perfect sense BUT everything I've researched indicates VPN should be installed on the router, not the NAS. The thinking was, let the router get attacked instead of the NAS (with precious data). Of course, that means the router gives a different "internal" IP that requires masquerading so this is much easier... But at the cost of security? Thoughts?
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 2 жыл бұрын
So this is just another option. Realistically both options are pretty much just as secure due to the fact that in either case if the VPN server becomes compromised the attacker would have local access to the NAS. Though I should note this happening would be incredibly unlikely. Mostly its easier to install on the router (if the router works well with a VPN server) because the router already handles routing
@scottcarson19
@scottcarson19 2 жыл бұрын
@@SpaceRexWill Agreed, and thanks for the reply! Any chance you have a tutorial on IP masquerading to get the router's VPN-based 10.8. internal IP to convert to the NAS's internal 192.168. IP?

Thanks for all the great videos, question .. is opening up only port 1194 in my router enough or do I also have to keep the ports 5000 and 5001 open to acces dsm remotely?
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 2 жыл бұрын
You can close all ports other than 1194 as everything else will go over the VPN

Thank you for yet another very helpful video for what could be a complicated subject. I have my PC's, laptops working as expected. However, I'm having a little bit of a problem connecting from my XS-Max iPhone. Can you provide any guidance or direct me to a resource? Maybe "OpenVPN to NAS via Smartphones" is a consideration for a future follow-up video ;) Thanks again.

Great info in all of your videos. I believe I am having a problem with routing. If the Synology NAS has two ip address ( 192.168.x and a 10.10.x) and the VPN server is linked to the LAN address 10.10.0.1, is it possible to have VPN clients who connect successfully have access to the 192.168.x network? Clicking the box to Enable Clients access to Servers LAN only allows traffic to the 10.10.x network. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You

I am looking for something simpler than this but use my Synology. I need to be remote but have the IP be my home IP for certain applications to work. I don't care about security or encryption. I have in the past run a simple program called FreeProxy from home and ran it in a very basic mode. I would enter the home IP address into Firefox as a proxy with a port. Now everything I did with Firefox looked like I was home. That's 90% of the goal and wanted to know if I can do this with my Synology 211j. The other 10% is using the proxy IP (home IP plus port) into other programs and have them think I am home using the home IP address. I now have a ddns and would use that instead of the home IP . Can you tell me if this can be done on the Synology.

Hi THX FOR YOUR GREAT WORK! LOVE WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS Would love your opinion\help. I would love to give multiple users access to business Synology Server. Currently Im running Onedrive on all devices and sync to NAS. This is definitely not the way I want to do this. Question is what is my best route to give access to Files remotely and be able to Edit. This is where my mind is Now... 1. Onedrive/Google Drive - Very Limited - Specially on Mac and expensive if every user has 2-3TB of files 2. Synology Drive - I like what I see - BUT NO support on Mac for On demand Sync. Working remotely on large files will be too slow. So Have to download files to local hard drive. Which Onedrive/sync app does well. And can work on dowloaded files when have no internet 3. VPN - I never investigated but looks like it can work - But still be be very slow on working remotely right? And no access when there is no Internet? WHERE SHOULD I GO?
