OpenWRT - Install AdGuard Home and Overview

AdGuard Home is a network-wide software for blocking ads & tracking. After you set it up, it'll cover ALL your home devices, and you don't need any client-side software for that. In this tutorial, I am doing to show you step by step how to download the AdGuard Home package for your OpenWRT router by selecting the correct SoC architecture, initial setup with web browser, configure DNS forwarding on OpenWRT and finally application walkthrough. In this example, I have installed AdGuard Home on the Raspberry Pi 4, running the latest OpenWRT version.

23:20 MOST IMPORTANT SECTION explaining how to automatically restart AdGuard Home (AGH) when the router is restarted. I couldn't find this documented clearly anywhere else so I've spelled it out here for reference. (Make sure you have a backup saved first: Navigate to LuCI → System → Backup / Flash Firmware → Actions: Backup) 1. In Terminal, login to OpenWrt 2. Switch to the AGH folder: cd /opt 3. Now open the startup script with the built in “vi” text editor: vi /etc/rc.local 4. In the editor, switch to ‘insert mode’ by pressing “i” 5. Paste this command: /opt/AdGuardHome/AdGuardHome 6. In order to get out of vi, you have to be in *command mode*. Press [Esc] (the escape key). 7. To save and exit (You won’t see a clean line or anything, but just start typing and it’ll appear at the bottom) :wq! 8. Now reboot the router to test it Weirdly, after making this change on a Belkin RT3200 running snapshot version of OpenWRT, the power LED constantly flashes. I hope this isn't a bad thing! poorly the AdGuard Home doesn't save its stats.db through reboots since these are saved, by default, from openWRT. I was instructed to update the PATH, but there isn't a PATH location to edit on openWRT:

Hi, sorry for the late response. Just want to check if you are running Snapshot version of the Stable one? If you are on Snapshot, you can even install adguardhome from the LuCI software page. Just simply install the package and you should be good to go. (Try to revert all the changes on firewall, DNS, rc.local and delete the adguardhome folder before you try to install it with LuCI).

Hey, you have to use the ext4 image for this. This is the tutorial on how to install OpenWRT on the HDD and resize the parition to fit the whole space. You can do the same, by plug the SD (which have OpenWRT installed) to a Linux host and follow the guide. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYCvn2V-ZquNe6s

LOL! Putting '/opt/AdGuardHome/AdGuardHome' command in rc.local breaks reboot on x86 OpenWrt for some reason. Neither the reboot from LUCI works nor from SSH. If you're facing a similar issue after setting up AdGuardHome remove '/opt/AdGuardHome/AdGuardHome' rc.local and use '/opt/AdGuardHome/AdGuardHome -s install' instead.

Hey, you need to tick the box to "Enable" the list and then click "Check for update" to have all the hosts updated.

I used OpenWRT on Redmi AC2100. I follow the instructions and set up the Adguardhome. However, it does not open with the reboot of the router, so I edit /etc/rc.local Command: nano /etc/rc.local and add /opt/AdGuardHome/AdGuardHome (then save and exit) The AdguardHome opened with the reboot of the router. However, the router led light on the router (system led) turned to RED (instead of blue) and the router cannot be rebooted from CLI or OpenWRT. I remove the line /opt/AdGuardHome/AdGuardHome in /etc/rc.local and unplugged the device. Then everything works normally. How this happens?

If you are using snapshot version of OpenWRT, you can go to Software section on LuCI and install the package adguardhome.

Check the comment section, a friend is using MTK chipset and he found the correct version of adguard. If you are on snapshot, you can just directly install the package on LuCI.

Mất WAN là sao bạn? Ý bạn là không truy cập được Internet? Khi sử dụng OpenWRT như một thiết bị LAN, hoặc switch bạn cần đặt IP tĩnh, subnet mask, gateway và DNS để nó biết đường ra Internet. Nếu vẫn có ý định dùng OpenWRT bạn có thể kiểm tra lại.

You do not need to install this package manually because it is already in the OpenWrt repository (opkg install adguardhome).

Hey, NextDNS is natively supports by OpenWRT. You just need to install package "luci-app-nextdns" on LuCI. To remove Adguard Home, you can revert the changes on auto startup script, firewall and DNS server, and delete the adguardhome folder after that.

Hi, - What is the location of your adguard home, are you sure it is in /opt/AdGuardHome/AdGuardHome? - Make sure the rc.local file has the line "exit 0" (remove the "").

@@VanTechCorner I believe I didn't explain myself very well, let's explain again, I could enter adguard manually by typing " service adguard start " but if I reboot opencrt adguard did not start automatically. ( What is the location of your adguard home, are you sure it is in /opt/AdGuardHome/AdGuardHome? ) if not everybody uses the same location that's omething you failed to explain, I didn't choose a particular location to install my openwrt so I assumed that it was the same location for everybody including yours, you shoud've said you had a custom location. I already solved the problem by editing adguardhome/ ini.dir and setting start =99 and stop=121 nevertheless not working as I expected, do not work as well as the chrome free adblock extention , and sometimes it fails to filter a lot of ads, do not block ads in my cellphone or tablet as well, I did all the setting you did and I added a lot of different dns filters, it blocks some ads sometimes but somehow when I refresh the page the ads come back as if they find a workaround. I did this experiment to see if it was worth it however using the extention is way more efficient when it comes to block ads .
