OpenWRT - Install OpenWRT 21.02 on Ubiquiti UniFi AC Lite

Thanks for this! It helped a lot. However I was already running 5.43.56 which meant there was no wget or mtd on my AP AC Lite. In order for me to downgrade the Unifi firmware to the recommended Unifi 3.7.58 from the guide I simply used upgrade [url of recommended Unifi firmware from the openwrt guide] After that I could continue along with your guide. Really look forward to your video's because you go in depth with the command line part of openWRT. Your video's are still missing more on the routerboard RBM11G board! It run's a media tec 7621 processor and supports openWRT. It is a cheap solution that has a M.2 slot for 4G modem and a gigabyte WAN port to hook up a switch that you can hook access points to. Keep up the great work

Glad to hear that. Are you using UniFi AC Lite as well? Do you remember the firmware version before switching to OpenWRT.

Hey, with the UniFI firmware and Samsung Galaxy S10, I get 550/500Mbps download & upload with OpenSpeedTest (the speedtest server is running on LAN).

Thanks for the comment. If you only run 1 or 2 UniFi AP in your network, setup a UniFi controller is costly. OpenWRT will be a great choice and better roaming experience, the only downside is that UniFi AC has a closed source SDK, using open source firmware & driver does impact the throughput.

Academic aside, what does the OpenWRT offer that the stock FW does not in real world situations? Primarily people flash the stock FW for OpenWRT to get advanced enterprise level features. If the devices involved are cheap, it’s even better. The AC Lite is not expensive, but they are not cheap either. Is there a cheaper alternative to the AC Lite that can take OpenWRT? Can APs that have OpenWRT be managed centrally by a controller like the AC Lite with their stock FW?

There are a lot of features OpenWRT offers. For example, I am using a UniFi AC Lite and an Aruba AP-105, and I want to set up fast roaming or Mesh WiFi, it is impossible. However, with the devices running OpenWRT, this can be done in just few clicks. You can manage your OpenWRT devices centrally (see OpenWISP). Take another step further, GL-iNet router is based on OpenWRT and the devices can be managed by an application on smartphone, or manage centrally at goodcloud (see www.gl-inet.com/solutions/goodcloud/)

@@VanTechCorner Thank you for the clarification. I and many of your viewers appreciate your detailed videos on these products and their features. Can you do additional videos on how to use OpenWrt in a multi-AP environment? If OpenWRT and the vendors that use it such as GL-iNet would create an entire ecosystem of APs and routers that use OpenWRT, this great opensource FW can move out of the labs and homes to the enterprise environment where companies typically use Cisco and Ubiquiti. I had such high hope for OpenMesh for a while until it was sold to a bigger company. That change of ownership basically destroyed the opensource identity of Openmesh.

The benefit is you don't need to run the controller software (or keep it running) in order to manage the AP. Ubiquiti also do not publish device support timescales, so one day you can upgrade your controller to find your AP is no longer supported. With OpenWRT a device is supported for however long the community maintains a build target for the device, probably only limited by device specs as the linux kernel grows.

Hi, I can't find this model in openwrt.org, means the official support for the device is not available with openwrt.org. However there are guides and videos showing how to do that, you can take a look and give it a try.

Followed this video nearly a year ago when I set up my UniFi AP AC LR. Now recently I have been having weird disconnects from the eth0 port. It drops connection every few seconds for half an hour and then works fine as if nothing happened. This happens randomly throughout the day. I tried different LAN cables but those cables all work fine with my computer. Sometimes it also refuses to connect with 1000 speed but with 100 it works fine. Has anyone experienced something similar and or has a solution to this?

Did you change a new PoE injector or switch port? I have a UAP and it is having the same problem. There are disconnections and sometimes the UAP linkspeed is only 10Mbps. After I replug the Ethernet cable, it start to work (soft-reset / disable & enable the port from software doesn't help). I think there is something wrong with the hardware but it is too old for the warranty.

@@VanTechCorner No still the same PoE. I did test a few ports but they acted the same. I bought it back in August 2020 so warranty just expired by around 3 months. Mine acts like you described. Re-plugging the cable seems to help for a short time.
