Charlie thank you for doing this! I absolutely love this vocal performance. I am completely untrained in music, but I have enjoyed good music for my whole life. This performance is among my favorites. Despite my ignorance, I also love hearing musicians nerd out about great performances. I've been looking forward to hearing a vocal expert and symphonic metal lover like you nerd out about this. Some day I hope you get to interview Simone.

Love the analysis. This song touches the heart and mind. A song you heard at the Symphonic Synergy concert was Sirens (of Blood and Water). I recommend analyzing the combination of Simone, Charlotte Wessels and Myrkur as a trio in the music video.

Thx for analysis video, very interesting! A lot new info for me about a capella choral music. And about doing vocal cracks on purpose - Sia Furler immediately comes to mind. But i really love it, when it's done unintentionally live.

It's an interesting phenomenon across multiple genres, but universally, it's like I said, it's an act of pure expression. You get it in pop, opera, rock, symphonic metal ;) etc.

Oh my goodness!!! I'm at 2:24, and my whole body is vibrating and shaking, even after pausing. I'm still hearing the harmonics, and they're still traveling through me! Talk about awesome!!! SATB -- Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass. Before RA about broke me in half and I couldn't straighten up for over 12 years, I sang (from the age of two onward) solo and in choirs. By the time I was in my teens, I could soar through nearly six octaves, effortlessly. Then (for all of those years before getting both hip joints replaced in 2017) I could only sing bass. So I did that, because I cannot not sing. I just can't! It's all I ever really wanted to do. I've also played cornet/trumpet, piano, organ, accordion, acoustic guitar, recorders, penny whistles, and the willow whistles my dad used to make for us when we were little. I'm now back up to just over five octaves, and working on the higher notes and regaining fluidity. This song is so wonderful! You explained the differences in the tonal layering so well! "... Fighting in the darkness ..." I fell apart again! Wow!!! I'll take the nerd stuff any day! Go for it! 😀 At 13:02 (ish), I noticed her stance, and greatly approved. 😁🥰 The "crack" hit me hard. I totally agree about knowing when the singer is "feeling it." I had never heard this song before, but believe me, I will watch more of their stuff! I will also go check out "Roomful of Teeth." That sounds really exciting! Thank you very much for this wonderful reaction!!! I enjoyed and appreciated greatly! 🔥😲🤩

This choir has been working with Epica for many years, recording their albums. to be honest, not my favorite version of this song 😁 I love the studio version, it has a great mix and sound and I really love the live version with Apocalyptica live afas 2023, just a magical performance. But I understand that you are more interested in analyzing the voices. I am interested in your analysis of her performance on the song "Rise again" live in London, it seems to me that this is Simone's best vocal performance in the last few years and there is something to analyze there, considering they literally had one short rehearsal of this song in the dressing room before the concert

A good choir can make a lot of sound. It might be suspended mics too? I feel like you couldn't get such a well blended sound with lavs, but I'm no tech expert
@joppepeelen
@joppepeelen 2 ай бұрын
@@CharlieCalottaReacts i agree lavs normally wont sound that nice, but they all have a chain around there neck with something hanging around the chest area (or a little lower even). witch would make sense since they are all to far away from any mic. with drums playing etc. DPA lavs can sound as good as a regular condenser. problem often is clothing or they are to close to the neck area, making a nasty sound due to comb filtering. my guess is there mics are (lavs) hanging rather freely/lower then usual as you would do in movies or tv, witch make them sound better but with less direct sounds but im sure they sing loud enough to make up for it, lets not forget they blend 16 of them and use quite some reverb :) makes up for allot

This is a great point. I’m gonna have to look deeply and watch like 10 hours of reviews for the world’s best lavs 🤣 no but seriously their circular configuration also might have something to play into its effectiveness. Vocal ensembles are always better that way.
