I love that Riot does this. The fact that every year at the World Championship, we get a song, and they are always great, is such a luxury as a player. Not only do we get a great song, but we also get a fantastic animation that usually tells a story, often about something that happened in the previous years. This year's animation tells the story of a Korean pro player called 'Deft' and often compares him to another Korean player who goes by 'Faker.' They started playing professionally in the same year and even attended the same high school (Note: Korean high schools are massive, so they never actually knew each other). However, while Faker went on to be considered the greatest player of all time, winning three World Championships, Deft was somewhat left in the background, often reaching the World Championship but getting knocked out in the top 8 or top 4. But in 2022, Deft's team, considered an underdog, managed to reach the finals, which was against Faker's team. Against pretty much everybody's expectations, they won in an absolute nail-biter 3-2 best-of-five series. It's always a bit sad when two teams from the same region are in the finals, but even then, this was the best World Finals, in my opinion. That being said, let's go back to the World Songs: It all started in 2014 with 'WARRIORS BY IMAGINE DRAGONS.' It's a great song, and I believe they were chosen partly because some of the band members played the game. I remember seeing a video of a pro player teaching Daniel Platzman how to play in 2016, and I also recall a tweet in 2018, so he probably played in 2014 as well. Next in 2015, we got "WORLDS COLLIDE BY NICKY TAYLOR." I think the song is great, but since it didn't have a video, it has somewhat been forgotten. It was really cool that they got Nicky Taylor to do it. At the time, she was just a League KZbinr who often did music based on League. In 2016, we got "IGNITE BY ZEDD," which is very good but quite unique compared to other things Riot has done. Then in 2017, we got "LEGENDS NEVER DIE BY AGAINST THE CURRENT & CHRISSY CONSTANZA," and in 2018, we got "RISE BY THE GLITCH MOB, MAKO, AND THE WORD ALIVE." I think these two are probably the most iconic 'Worlds' songs. They are fantastic and really get you hyped up. Many consider one of these to be their favorite. In 2019, we got "PHOENIX BY CAILIN RUSSO AND CHRISSY CONSTANZA." In 2020, it was "TAKE OVER BY JEREMY MCKINNON, MAX, AND HENRY." And in 2021, we had "BURN IT ALL DOWN BY RIOT MUSIC TEAM FT. PVRIS." I don't think people remember these as well, but they are still great. However, most don't consider them as good as 'RISE' or 'LEGENDS NEVER DIE.' In 2022, "LIL NAS X - STAR WALKIN’ PROD. BY CIRKUT, OMER FEDI, AND LIL NAS X" was released. I think this was the first time the entire community agreed that a song was 'meh.' Most did not think the song was bad; it just wasn't hype enough to be a 'Worlds' song, so it received a lot of criticism for that. The animation faced similar feedback. Now in 2023, we have 'GODS FT. NEWJEANS (뉴진스) PROD. BY SEBASTIEN NAJAND AND ALEX SEAVER OF MAKO.' Personally, I think this is fantastic, reminiscent of the highs from 2016 and 2017. I personally think the criticism from 2022 really helped Riot hone in on what we expect in a Worlds song. Well, that's quite a long comment, but if just one person reads this, I will consider it a win! xD

To explain Worlds it's essentially a yearly League of Legends (as in the game) Tournament that hosts the best teams from each major region (NA EU, Korea, China, and South East Asia) and Wildcard Regions (Latin America, Japan, etc) go head to head and which team can hoist the Summoner's Cup (aka the trophy) To keep it brief without going into heavy detail Wildcard regions barely if Ever go positive in group stage (the last team to do this was in 2016) North America tends to get trashed (We're the first region where are #1 Seeded team went winless at 0-6) Europe just recently broke their streak of making quarter finals South East Asia is sort of considered a Wildcard region, but they have a World Championship title already (2012) resulting in essentially Korea and China being the Best teams attending Both regions have won the last 10 years World Champions (Korea having won 5 straight times across 3 different teams) We get a new anthem yearly, some hitting extreme highs (Rise, Warriors, Legends Never Die) and others hitting pretty low (Star Walkin and Worlds Collide) ^ the choices are my personal take, not the general opinion of the community sorry if this looks long, I tried keeping it simple as best I can here ;-;

This song and video is about Deft. Someone who has spent a decade in the shadow of Faker whom he has chased after since the very beginning of the competitive scene of the game. Each defeat in the video mirrors a year at the world championships where he was knocked. Until his team helped him up, and they made a miracle run in 2022 where he beat all his former teammates and emerged from the bottom of the ladder.

The one thing people aren't mentioning is that the theme fits what happened last Worlds so much. DRX, the team led by Deft (the guy featured in the music video) were massive underdogs heading into Worlds. NOBODY thought they would win as they were the 4th seed (worst ranked) team from Korea. Most expected them to bomb out of the tournament early on, but ended up winning the whole thing. They were playing absolutely out of their minds. Almost as if they were possesed. They were playing god.

Not only where they the 4th seed but they only barely managed to get that, and at worlds they didn't dominate, they scrapped for every single win and culminated in what is essentially the final boss, T1 and Faker. Extremely strong underdog wibes from the start to finish. Every finals that is against Faker is just more epic in general, same reason why Rise is so sick, because Faker was truly the final boss of that tournament.

not sure if it was intentional but the word gods being stuttered 4 times and ending in a plural being "gods" is very fitting for a worlds song. Because in the end a team is made up of 5 people and on the worlds stage the single most important thing is synergy and teamwork. Individually they are not quite gods, but as a whole they are a full pantheon but maybe it just sound gud.

just for anyone unaware, worlds is the international tournament. most of the year, there are the regional tournaments, the korean league LCK, the european league the LEC, and at worlds, the winning teams of the different regions gather to fight it out and see which team is best in the world.

Worlds is essentially "World Championships" but shortened, the way people will call a Regional Championship competition just "Regionals" in like high school and collegiate competitions. I would love to see your takes on their other like... "normal" music, the stuff that's not exclusively meant to be like a video game score or character theme specifically. It's not "video game music" in that it's music for gameplay, so much as it's more promo material featuring real world artists, but it's not that different from hiring a group of musicians from a well-known orchestra to make your OST music. At least not on the level of CREATING the music, all the stuff revolving around record labels and rights and such is definitely a different level but the actual the concept of a song made by well-known musicians for a video game isn't really that different.
