The song stands out from many boss battle themes and as a piece on its own because of the stark changes in intensity and voice across the run time. It goes from "Oh S#!*, I'm Screwed!" To "Wait, I can do it!" to Take this $#!# 2023!!!" Almost like it goes from the BOSS's theme to the PLAYER's theme. And we feel it all! Masterful in every area.

The Sha'Hala music, both physical and spectral are great. The Imposter Kings is amazing, you can tell when the boss stops playing with you like a egotistical cat, and takes you as a real threat. The new music for Lydusa is also a top contender. This game had no business making the music so good. I recommend giving all the world boss songs a chance.

When Phase 2 starts its actually playing portions of the Final boss of Remnant 1 the dreamer. Kind of implying that annihilation is basically a recreation of the dreamer explaining the whole phase 2 mechanic
@energyvanquish6 ай бұрын
It’s theorised that annihilation is the dragon that coaxed the dreamer into killing all the guardians in the prequel game. The music linking back to the dreamer fight would make complete sense if it ends up being true.

@@energyvanquishGiven that root earth was essentially a mirror of the protagonist’s earth, it’s very likely that Annhilation is the mirrored version of the Dreamer. Similarly, Cancer is likely the Harsgard of root Earth given that his theme from the first game plays for the boss.

I agree that this boss is one of the best, not just in the visuals and music but mechanically as well. The audio cues of the boss’ attacks are soo satisfying once you get used to them, in fact I did a run on Apocalypse difficulty and I thought it was gonna be the hardest fight but it turns out the second to last boss was the hardest (At least to me). Very immersive fight, that’s what good boss should strive to be, immersive. But of course, people are different so this is my opinion.

One of my favourite things about this song is how they made it line up with the game, the music changes as the phases change, as well as when the boss is about to do different moves or throw you between arenas. It's one of my favourite things about video game music, it can be so dynamic and the work that the the devs, composers, and everyone in between puts in to make it that way is incredible.

This is so interesting. Because the song borders on unfocused with just how many styles are used for this song. But the transitions are just so clean it blends them together so smoothly, that it works.
@spamhere11234 ай бұрын
The thing is, all those different styles fit not only the boss fight, but the LORE of the boss fight perfectly. You go from fighting a giant dragon made of wood in dark and scary realm, to some very odd, glitching, electronic world. Why? Because the Root (the main antagonists of the game) are strongly implied to be, in essence, malware on the source code of the multiverse. They corrupt reality itself. You aren't just fighting a wooden monster, you are fighting what amounts to a virus in reality.

Rob Westwood has been underrated for a good minute but the way he showed his range (esp in tracks like those that change based on player choice) with Remnant 2 he's really showing he deserves to be mentioned right alongside the greats of our industry like Mansell, Gordon, and Yu-peng Chen IMO. Annihilation is crazy. It's one of my favorite boss fights because while you're playing it you realize that every single audio cue matters, you realize the game has been pushing you towards this point the entire time. It's been teaching you everything you need to know and now it's time to execute. And in the moment you finally understand and succeed the music swells and you almost feel like the developers are behind your back celebrating your understanding pushing you towards victory. I love Remnant so much. The new DLC music is insane too.

Legitamately the best final boss in any video game ever made, the design of the fight is perfect. You can practically fight it like a rhythm game since every attack is clearly choreographed with their own attack and sound cues. The 2nd phase of this boss has one of the best mechanics I've ever seen in gaming flat out that requires you to lock in more than anything else I've ever fought. Struggled so so hard on this one for hours when the game released but after finally beating the game on the hardest difficulty you learn this boss like nothing else. When every fight against it you can do a no-hit not out of exceptional skill but rather mastery over the timing and mechanics and dodges with the game it feels like nothing else and beats any other boss fight in a souls game.

Really great analysis Marco! Reacting to Annihilation for your first time listening to Remnant 2 is a lot to unpack, it has many layers that came from different themes that you've heard throughout the game and i was so surprised that Rob Westwood managed to perfectly arranged the transition for each themes very smoothly and flawlessly. Remnant 2 soundtrack is my personal best music album from 2023, and i bet as an Opera singer yourself you would enjoy this album as well (it has 2 volumes so it really has a lot of music). I recommend to check out the main theme as your starter. It has 2 version, a track called "Main Menu" is a shorter version of the theme to familiarize yourself with the leitmotif and "You Shall Rise" is the extended version featuring THE legendary epic music singer Merethe Solvetd. My personal favorite is the "Imposter Kings", that track hooked me instantly and it was at that time i decided to bought the album myself, worth it!

The phase transitions that are intertwined between the music and gameplay make the encounter such a treat After you learn the first phase, the game congratulates you with a massive orchestral victory theme, but then the boss reveals his ace in the sleeve switching both forms causing the music to come back from your theme to a combined struggle of both sides.

Annihilation is the core of Root. The Root in reality is a computer virus that corrupts the data that is reality/existence in Remnant. In the ending everything is breaking down in white cubes or bytes of data. The electronic/synth section of the track makes complete sense in that regard.

Oh yes, I have waited for this for so long! Rob did an amazing job on this game's soundtrack, and I actually do love every track, but man, Annihilation really stands out. This moment when - after the story of two games - you finally stand before the embodiment of extinction. The root of all "evil". Annihilation (literally). And then the soundtrack kicks in and you know this is gonna be epic. This fight really was a journey in itself. One of my favourite boss fights in gaming history. And the music captures this brilliantly. What a masterpiece. After this the credits roll with the track "You Shall Rise", which is an extended version of the main theme with lyrics. It's beautiful. And after going through countless heart attacks (depending on the difficulty you just faced Annihilation on - and wether you did it solo or with friends), this is the perfect track to calm down and reflect on what you just experienced.

What is incredible to me is the heroic parts of the song. It's meant yo make you feel like you are the hero defeating the evil villain and saving the world....But that's a lie, a trick, this song this game and this sage isn't about us triumphing over evil. It is The Root's story, The Root is the protagonist, the hero of the story. It is the champion freeing all worlds and life from pain, at least that is what it believes, with the ultimate end being that we DON'T Triumph over it, we ultimately loose, as the realization that The Root has imbedded its self into all of reality, all of existence. The Root has won and there is no stopping it, it is the champion that saved all of reality from life, from existence with the only way to stop it being to reset all of reality A wonderful end to the story, a wonderful theme for a wonderful character and boss that became a true god of its own justice
