Yeah, the whole trilogy has insanely good tracks. I replayed Lightning Returns recently on NG+ and the sheer difficulty of the final boss on it made me appreciate his two battle themes even more, especially the absolutely mental start of the final phase track. Caius' final battle theme in 13-2, Unseen Abyss, is still my favourite track in the trilogy though, these latin lyrics are ingrained in my brain at this point.

I think the reason it feels underrated is because the series as a whole is often looked down upon, so people kind of mention the soundtrack being good as a throwaway or a caveat like “sigh, okay, well at least the music was good I guess.” I feel like that is still underrating it because I personally think Hamauzu is the most brilliant composer working in video games currently. Uematsu has written some classic melodies, yes, but the stuff Hamauzu writes melts your brain with its complexity and richness. The XIII trilogy soundtrack isn’t just “really good” in my eyes. I think it’s utterly brilliant and should be brought up in discussions about game music way more often than it is. Like, people bring up Persona 5 and Nier Automata all the time because they’re more recent and as a whole they’re amazing games, but I would easily say FFXIII trilogy music is on the same level as those two games, yet you hear people talk about them 10 times more than you hear about XIII. Thus, I think you could call it underrated.

For not yet playing FF XIII-2, with your musical analysis you pretty much summed up the plot of the game 😅 Caius is a great antagonist, the way he is determined to forsake the world to free “the most dear one” of the burden of her destiny is what makes him a great multidimensional character

Absolutely LOSING MY MIND to finally see this on here!! Caius' Theme is one of my absolute favourite pieces of video game music and seeing you get all hyped about it was the equivalent of a pal finally seeing a movie you wanted them to watch! Caius' story makes my heart ache. He's such a painfully tragic creature and I feel like his song is such an important tool to convey that. Even though you're fighting him, you can't hate him. He's stuck in such a horrendous position 😭 I won't go into detail in case you decide to play it, but the story of 13-2 is SO underappreciated and Caius is a tragically overlooked antagonist. They wanted to make an antagonistic theme to surpass One Winged Angel, and I think they definitely accomplished that. OWA is grand and powerful, a true final boss theme. But Caius' Theme makes me feel *so* much anguish. He's not evil, he's trapped and desperate. It's *so* key to connecting with him and empathising with his situation. There's another theme connected to this one called 'Endless Paradox' which is quite powerful imo! Thrilled 13-2 made it into the spotlight, and with such a strong song too ❤

Ardyn's characterization is a homage to Kefka in a lot of ways, while Emet-Selch has the benefit of being very likeable before everything went wrong.

XIII-2 is honestly one of my favorite FF games. Caius is that kid at the playground that you don't want to have make believe fights with because he just goes "Nuh uh!" to everything you do. He's both one of the more tragic antagonists in the series but also a bit corny, but in a great way. The OST is also amazing, they went off course from the usual sound of FF. I think they just decided because it was a sequel game they could just go wild with the OST.

Oh man there's a whole section of the OST that heavily involves this theme and it's so good. If you ever want to go through that on your own: Heart of Chaos The Promised Future Invisible Depths Eternal Paradox The OST as a whole is great, but whew the music in this section of the story was consistently fitting and fantastic. Even though the battle theme is elsewhere in the OST, you can already guess it's part of this lineup. Shoutout to the credits mix, but I'm not sure it works as well without hearing the rest of the OST first. I'm not sure if the games are your style. I enjoyed them a lot more than most people and particularly loved the completionism aspects of 13-2, having fun going around and doing stuff, but I still recognize their faults (on board with some of those myself) and understand why they got the reputation they did. Some of that is built on false equivalences, but there are very legitimate reasons too. It doesn't help either that the games shine more in their more difficult/endgame content. The battle system is never likely to really stand out as fun and interesting until the game gives you more options and heavily encourages you to be comfortable using them effectively. There are a few small things you can do earlier on to spice it up a bit, but that's more from taking later player mastery backward for a second playthrough. On top of that, falling into the trap of taking the easy way out of battles makes them suuuuper slow and tedious instead of fun and engaging in any way. 13-2 improved on that, but I have to imagine both the combat and the story are quite odd without the familiarity from the first game.

ahh Caius Ballad, very underrated villain because of the stygma on XIII trilogy, he's one of the most powerful villains too, debated to be the most. I totally recommend playing XIII trilogy, game has his flaws like every other, people at the time weren't ready and didn't took well the change in style compared to past FF games, similar case nowadays with XVI. They really went above and beyond on it with variety and quality, especially for a sequel that has so many completely original compositions instead of arrangements. Would totally suggest listening to Noel's Theme, Eclipse, and Xanadu Palace of Pleasure to get an idea on the range the soundtrack has on top of this song.

Final fantasy 13 was one of the first games I played with a deep story growing up, and a lot of their themes and messages really changed my life on how I view things. I remember listening to this theme along with many other themes while going to school everyday. I still listen to them to this day. Caius is a man who commits evil for the sake of those he cares about(Yeul), but I won't go too deep into spoilers. when I hear this theme, I hear his determination to do ANYTHING for her sake. but it's not hopeful. It gives a feeling of doing what must be done in his perspective. He himself knows its evil to everyone but himself. Love it. Thanks again Marco!

YES! Excellent review. What a pleasant way to start my birthday. I've been waiting so long for you to finally stumble upon any song from the FFXIII-2 soundtrack. The OST is one of the best in the franchise imo. All the variations of Caius' theme are goated, but I hope you react to The Unseen Abyss. One of the best final boss themes ever. I'd also recommend Yeul's theme, Noel's theme, Run, New Bodhum's theme, and Ruined Hometown. And I personally love the game. It's very fun and not very long.

Sorry Marco this is literally the 3rd comment in like 20 minutes, but I think the comment you made about Caius character form hearing the theme is pretty accurate which could say a lot about hamauzu’s ability to relay things but besides that definitely keep going with these 13 trilogy videos as there are some real gems hidden in those games. I was REALLY into the FF13 games when they were coming out! IMO the first one has interesting world/story/characters with... less than perfect gameplay, XIII-2 is a lot more fun but with an honestly kind of confusing story (as is often the case with time travel shenanigans...), and LR is a good mix of both's strengths. If you dig JRPGs I'd give them a shot! But either way, definitely check out more of their soundtracks! 😉

Caius Theme was written to be better than One-Winged Angel (if it is or not is a subject of apreciation). Everything in this theme was carefully thought to say something about Caius. And the first thing we can notice is that it's a Minor Theme, showing there's a sadness in Caius, a character that didn't want to be a villain, but had to become one.

Caius is the Guardian of Yeul who is cursed with the Eyes of Etro goddess of death and reincarnation to see the whole timeline as it changes and it shaves off her lifetime making her destined to die at 15, but due to the eyes she reincarnates infinitely and Cauis has the Heart of Etro making him immortal seeing Yeul die before his eyes while he has to watch impotently, so he vows to end time and stop Yeul from dying ever again.

FF13 trilogy has some of the best FF pieces ever. Unseen Abyss (FF13-2 final battle theme, which is a remix of Caius Theme) is sooo good. The way the lyrics vanishes and the piece reaches the climax just feels great. FF13-2 can be enjoyed as a single game, but the best experience is to play the whole trilogy.

This entire trilogy is absolutely worth playing. I may be one of the few who considers the first game to be the best of the three in just about every way (except for the villain, which goes to Caius in XIII-2) but I think all three games are really good, especially from a musical standpoint. You should listen to Fighting Fate, Test of the L'cie, Yeul's Theme, Divine Love, Dust to Dust, Atonement, Invisible Depths and Heart of Chaos (those last two are Caius' actual battle themes while this is more of his character theme).

A thing about 13-2 : it was revealed from the beginning (and in the trailers) that Caius was the main antagonist of the game. And still, even with that information we have from the start (of the game), it's one of the most well written story in any Final Fantasy.

Caius' theme is just so underated and so good! I honestly do not understand why they don't play it in the distant world concerts when it is easily one of the best theme of the XIII trilogy. Instead they keep doing the same rendition of Fang's theme over and over again... I liked FFXIII-2 as a whole more than any of my friends, heh. Though regardless of anyone's feelings on the game, the XIII series, and especially XIII-2, for me, is one of the best out there. Otherwise, I echo most of the comments here about other key songs, and definitely the fact that the games' music is underrated since a lot of people wrote of the XIII games as a whole. Caius is my all time favorite Antagonist from Final Fantasy. It used to be Sephiroth but once I played XIII 2 he became my all time favorite due to his backstory and reasons. The music is amazing and there are other songs that go with it. That pain you hear is because of the story behind XIII 2 and what he is up to. Caius is a guardian for a girl who can see the future but it kills her in the end. Let's just say that he is immortal and guarded many of these girlsm i think you can guess what seeing so many died did to him and WHY he did what he did.

One of my favorite tracks in all FF games! It's so good. Also iirc it went through maaaany many iterations during development. Surprised you haven't heard FF13-2 soundtrack before but glad you got to experience it now! 13 trilogy has some of the best music in the entire series!

The ff13 trilogy may not be everyone's favorite, but I still think they're great games! The music never fails in ff. All the themes related to caius are phenomenal.

I started FF with the incredible VII. I didn't really like FF13-II. But the first time I met Caius, I felt like I was witnessing something crazy. I didn't level up much and had to replay the fight 5-6 times xd. The first challenge I had in this game. This character is the best villain ever, in my opinion. Best theme ever, super badass look, best voice, and he's not just a stupid mean dude. He has a reason for the arm he makes, he has a purpose. This guy is a legend.

The 13 trilogy isn't regarded too highly for the story/gameplay as FF games truth be told, but lord the music was something else. 13-2 is still one of my favorites regardless, Caius's character was such an amazing character. That being said, they are still definitely worth playing, all of the FF games are fun in their own right.

Caius is one of my absolute favorite antagonists in the FF series. His theme does such a good job at making every encounter with him exceptional. I'm a big fan of Hamauzu but the addition of Naoshi Mizuda (who did this particular track) and Mitsuto Suzuki for 13-2 was such a good call, they make a fantastic trio. I've even read that the game's director, Motomu Toriyama, told Mizuda that he shouldn't rest until the villain's theme could rival One Winged Angel from FF7.
