This track is interesting to me because it really doesn't follow standard "boss music" protocol. It's fun in that way because it allows us to reconsider what makes boss music "boss music" - fun.

It is in fact an underrated game. Not being a hardcore fan, it was the real first FF that hooked me and opened me up to the series. And until today it remains one of my favorite, even in the XIII trilogy. The music, the story and the characters are really endearing, it was a very pleasant trip. Almost the entire soundtrack in this game is exceptional so I'm excited to see you experience it for the first time !

Masashi Hamauzu is one of my favorite composers of all time! I can't stress how glad I am that he got recommended to work on FF7 Remakes by Uematsu himself. He has such an unique touch to his music. Especially the piano, which is his main instrument iirc. His piano sections in FFX soundtrack, especially final boss, are out of this world. And his music is the main reason I put FF13 trilogy very high on my FF favorites list.

Appreciate this. You would DEFINITELY with a capital D appreciate this song even moreso with the added context of the inclusion of the song Born Anew which is the song that serves as a prelude to this fight (boss fight before this one). When taken together you can see what hamauzu was really going for. Yes you mention fear but I also get the sensation of hope and perseverance. At this point the party has been through so many trials that they've all since overcome, this is just their final (no pun intended) challenge. As a kid I welcomed this theme with open arms cuz, to me, it meant Victory.

The story, the music, the character's journey everything is amazing. By the way I'm not an music expert at all but this theme really reminds me some music from Stravinski like the firebird or something.

Absolute same. I technically started FF on 12 (borrowed from a friend), but while I did grow to appreciate its strengths over time, it wasn't really for me... but 13 absolutely got me from the start, and stayed with me because of its characters, complex battle system, as well as just going ham with the visuals and music. Corridors? General lack of freedom? Personally, those elements just made it a unique isolated experience, which made full sense with not only the story (being fugitives, you don't have a lot of freedom while being on the run), but also the character's emotional states (how they're all struggling with stuff, feeling isolated from each other and even themselves). For that reason, I felt that any flaws aside, the game just worked for me... and THAT matters more than any particular conventions/definitions of what a game should/shouldn't have, at least imho.

FF13, despite its issues and poor reception, was definitely something special. I really need to replay it sometime, if only so I can fully appreciate the soundtrack within the context of the game. The chaotic sound of this particular track does a great job reinforcing the stress the player is supposed to feel; you're up against the (second phase) of the final boss, who casts Doom on you immediately, so you're literally racing against the clock, but the boss is *also* invulnerable to damage and status effects until you manage to stagger it, *and* it can dispel your own buffs, so setting up against the boss is also hard. What's really interesting to me is that the start of the track is still pretty heroic, because the cutscene leading into the fight was. So you go into this fight all pumped, and then immediately are faced with a seemingly invincible boss, just having to look at the Doom counter ticking down. The track builds up the chaotic feeling while you're realizing that your normal tactics don't work here, and are probably frantically trying to figure out what to do even though you don't really have time to think. Just a really good way of building that feeling.
@breanna_bee
@breanna_bee 11 ай бұрын
The name of the track makes sense with the story (so kind of a SPOILER), but basically Orphan is a kind of fused being that was only just "born" but it also longs for death. So it's simultaneously nascent, but also a requiem.

The thing I've realized as I've consumed more and more Hamauzu music over the years is that he doesn't tend to write songs that "pop" in the way Uematsu did, but his overall catalogue of work when taken as a whole is just simply the most impressive collection of musical composition I've ever seen. Like, Hamauzu doesn't write a lot of peoples' "favorite" songs, but every song he writes is brilliant. A lot of composers will write throwaway tracks for a large part of a soundtrack and then put a lot of effort into maybe the character themes or particular boss themes or cutscene themes or the main theme. I think it's why very few people will list any songs from FFXIII as their "favorites" in any category, yet every time you see that game's music talked about people have nothing but praise for it. It's a weird phenomenon to me.

Hey Marco! one game series music I recommend you check out is the Fable games by Lionhead Studios, the music from the main 3 titles are so well done, the games are very fairy tale-ish and whimsical so theirs not really a lot of crazy battle music (except for the 3rd game it's battle music is cool with context and it's basically your characters battle theme.) The games start to get more serious with the music as the games went on so I would recommend starting with the calm-serene storybook type music and high to low choirs of the 1st game and then transition into the 2nd game with it's almost celtic/trible vibe (oh and the Fairfax Castle theme has Harpsichord in it as well). And finally end with the 3rd with its music being the most serious (due to the world ending story) and also being heavily influenced by the lore and past games. These games are very different in how the games connect to, all 3 games are about the same bloodline being chosen by their sister or a quite manipulative blind-seer (depending on which game you play) to stop some horrific tyrant or a world ending being , but they are very happy and cheery at the same time with some great comedy and off the wall jokes and pop-culture references (and a great cast of voices as well.) These games are pretty much forgotten so it would be cool to see someone talking about them, hope you check them out! And it would be a great Birthday-day gift as well. And if you wish to play the games all 3 are on Xbox Game Pass due to the games being Xbox exclusives, in fact the first game was a launch title for the original Xbox.

Personally when it comes to 13 themes, I prever "Born Anew" of Orphan´s first phase, it fits a lot with giving you this feeling of hopelessness fitting of a final boss. Furthermore I feel like "Nascent Requiem" never get´s to truly shine when you play 13 as it´s part of a very hectic boss fight that is usually done within less than one minute sadly.

The way you mentioned how the song elicits a feeling of hopelessness, like you can't win, actually ties in beautifully with the actual story of the game. The other big battle theme, Fighting Fate, by title alone, tells you exactly what the story is at its core. The end is already set in stone, and there's nothing you can do to change it. You're fighting fate. And then you get to Orphan, and you realize - there really wasn't any other choice. You have to do exactly what you know you shouldn't. Even in triumph, you are defeated.

If you ever intend on exploring more of Hamauzu's works I would LOVE to recommend Unlimited SaGa's OST, particularly the Overture! It didnt do that well as a game with klunky mechanics but the emotions he invokes, especially wonder are just fantastic and each character theme IMMEDIATELY tells you what the character is like. It's just so, so underloved I hope you do take the time for it.

13 is one of my favourite FFs, never understood the hate it got from some people. And the soundtrack is absolutely amazing. Even amongst other FF games, which IMO contain *easily* the best music of any games, or of any... thing, the music of XIII is a standout.

The thing that makes Orphan's fight so terrifying isn't so much that you're gonna die, and more that you're trying to kill the planet/moon's main source of energy. I won't talk about the why because I don't wanna spoil, but from an outsider's POV you're basically a bunch of terrorists during that fight.

I derive a sense of desperation and hopelessness from the begin bit but the final part (7:51) of the song gives me a feeling of hope only for it to loop again. It's a great song.

PLEASE react to the ARK Extinction Main Theme, it's insane and I'd love to here your analysis of it. It played in the main menu of that specific update and i remember sitting in the main menu not even playing the game listening to it on loop. Every time you react to video game music it instantly comes to mind.

Regarding the desire for a more bombastic track, the previous track "Born Anew" (previous phase) has just that. Meanwhile this fight is more of a victory rush, it's even immediately timed.

Someday, I may do an essay exploring FFXIII as an allegory of the tumultuous behind the scenes events of Square-Enix at the time. Sakaguchi had departed years earlier after the release of X, and Matsuno had left prior to completing XII. XIII was the product of a development team caught in the crosshairs of a company board that wanted -needed- a hit release for the series.

FFKIII is more divisive and controversial than universily disliked. Lightning is one of the most Iconic main female characters in gaming history. She was one of the few characters chosen to advertise Sony 3. She was so popular in Japan that they brought her back for 2 more FF games and some people even emulated her style and looks.

FF13's biggest issue I think was just that it experimented with a lot of new stuff, the graphics were, extremely good for the time, the story was amazing, the gameplay and battle loop was the part that had the biggest issue, and camera angles, but this was 2009, so it was when game companies were still experimenting with that stuff, they were slowly moving to a combat system that we have now in FF15, (Idk what 14 was like, I plan to play that soon) But because they experimented with so much stuff at once, I think that it was just so different from what most people expected that they disliked the change, at least in like, the US and western audiences, the game was so well received that, that first phase of Orphan's theme (Born Anew) Was done for a part of the last Japanese Olympics

Technically the fight before Orphan is the final boss. Orphan is pretty easy and more of a story piece than boss. It’s almost like Yu Yevon from FFX, with Jet-Sin being the true final boss, while Yu Yevon being there for story reasons. Granted you can still at least lose at Orphan.

Hey Marco, I was wondering if you had ever heard/thought about covering anything from Pokemon. The games don't exactly have the best reputation for quality anymore, but the soundtrack never misses. In case you're interested, I'll drop a few suggestions: Scarlet and Violet Final Boss: actually made by Toby Fox, awesome song. Necrozma Theme: this thing ruined its own dimension and now it's come for yours, very intense and leads to Ultra Necrozma Theme: very epic and has hints of Necrozma theme, as well as Solgaleo and Lunala's themes. Cynthia Theme: Infamous for both its PTSD-inducing piano intro and its intense main theme. Basically Pokemon's version of One-Winged Angel. Giratina Theme: Awesome theme for the Antimatter Pokemon. Platinum, Legends Arceus, and BDSP all have great versions of this theme. Arceus Theme from Legends Arceus: 9 minute masterpiece. Literally the theme of God and it's breaking reality. Ghetsis Theme: Ghetsis is Pokemon's most evil antagonist. He's manipulative, violent, hated by his own Pokemon, abuses his own son, threatens and assaults children, and wants to subjugate the whole world by manipulating people and later Legendary Pokemon. His theme actually has 3 versions from different games, all with different context. The original from Black/White is the first time you fight him. He's only recently revealed his plans and now you're in his way. The second theme is from Black2/White2. 2 years after being defeated in the first battle, he returns with a different plan. No more manipulating people to get in power, time to use a Legendary Pokemon's power to forcefully take over and freeze anyone who opposes. This theme is that of a man who has been seething for 2 years over the fact that a child stopped his plans, only to be met by yet another child interfering. The third theme is from Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon. Basically, dimension-hopping shenanigans and this Ghetsis actually succeeded in his original plans. He's stronger than ever, now with a Legendary Pokemon firmly at his side, and he plans to subjugate every universe. And these are just a few Battle themes. There's plenty more battle themes and lots of non-battle themes to enjoy as well.

Also, you know what I didn't even think about the whole "everyone's doing their own thing" thing at the beginning of the song. That's a fascinating thing. It's like all the sections are warming up and getting ready to do something epic together, perhaps to reflect the in-game team getting ready for the fight of their lives.

I'll have to admit that FF 13 was...a weird game...I don't like the fight system tho, but the MUSIC is still a banger! Which FF 13 Game I personally LOVED was FF 13-2. I love the story so much and all along the music. IF I may: I really would like to request from FF 15 a very beautiful piece. I knew that you already react to Somnus but I would be highly interested of your reaction from Episode Ignis the "Main Theme" of it OR "Altissia Under Siege" and what are your thoughts about it. ♥

FFXIII was slept on by a lot of people for how it changed the battle system, and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't for good reason. It was a much more difficult game to control as you essentially only were able to get your party to vaguely do what you wanted with the paradigm shift system, and you got a game over if the specific character you were allowed to control went down. That aside though, it was still a pretty good game. Visually it was beautiful, the story was good, it actually had a great soundtrack; but that's kind of a standard for Final Fantasy titles, so it's easy for people to dismiss it for the combat as the standards are so high everywhere else. This is a great song to play in Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, a game that I will endlessly shill for. If you're a fan of Final Fantasy music it's a joy to play, even if you generally hate Rhythm games like I do. Buy it on the Switch and play it on the go, on break at work, wherever. It's perfect.
"Blinded by Light" is my favorite Final Fantasy battle theme
