8:38 I will die on this hill, but, "If I am to be swallowed by fate, I must have fought well," is one of the hardest lines/lyrics in all of Guilty Gear. The sheer, raw, unmitigated defiance to say, "I don't care if all the cosmos and reality are aligned against me, I didn't hear no bell!" is just so peak.

I personally interpreted it as "If this is how it ends, then my work is done", seeing as how the heroes prevailed even against her plan, she proved herself wrong on the account that humanity is just fine the way they are without her intervention and thus in a way already achieved her goal in paving a better future for them. So I took that along with the last line as an act of acceptance or resignation, that she's finally satisfied with herself and only wished to leave a lasting impact on humanity that will keep them fighting as they do. I think it's no wonder why Happy Chaos was so willing to help her, they both come at the same endpoint.

It's pretty funny to me how incredibly close Marco is to figuring I-No out based just on her music. Goes to show how well the music alone was done. Thing is, what Marco didn't see in the wiki is that I-No has seen how the world ends, and everything she does in Guilty Gears story is her trying to stop it. Problem is, everything she tries never works. No matter how she shifts events, no matter who she manipulates, no matter who she kills, it always ends the same way. This resulted in her essentially having given up. She's still trying to stop the end of everything, but she's effectively just going through the motions at this point, and all her boisterousness, flirtation, ect. Is just a mask she's wearing to hide how much she's just dead inside.

Axl is an inspiration when you look even superficially at his story. The guy was by a stroke of fate... taken from his original time, thrown at a future so unrecognisable from his present that might as well be another reality, with people that could very literally end the world strolling around, being a normal dude... and he decided to make the most of his life. Everything if GG's verse is so above his weight class, but he only has to deal with it personally because whatever fuck up sent him into the future, not because he is some fated hero, but here he is little by little, step by step, he made sense of this new life, and enjoys the most of it.

I think the big takeaway that I had from this song was that I-No is depressed, severely. She's not, strictly speaking, human, but she's made from human memories of war trauma and desires for a better tomorrow, so it maps very well onto someone who's just constantly trying to distract themselves from the gnawing emptiness inside them, moving from platitudes ("When the sky cries in April, the flowers and trees smile in May", i.e. "It'll get better, just hang in there") to pleasing tropes (going on a date to see fireworks) and even to megalomania ("I flew high so that I could see everything") and _nothing works._ She just feels herself dying by inches every day, because she never has anything except the belief that nothing she does actually matters. And then, at the end, she finally finds some form of contentment, seeing that the end has finally come for her, and hoping that something she's done will have made it all worth it to someone. It's an anthem to her despair.

The longer you fight on against something that you don't win against no matter what you do or try, the more you will eventually lose every other value around you. It's the reason we fall into depressions if our lives are hard and society is putting obstacles in our way. Things that might have made us smile before will lose meaning over time. Everything becomes dull. But we put on fake smiles to not show it, maybe even to fool ourselves too. This is what I-No is going through after having tried to change the future over and over again without anything ever changing. The future cannot be changed as it is set in stone and it requires someone with alot of hope to even try changing it. And she still kept that hope right to the very end.

For me, it's the far most important song of the game : it's heavy and emotional, while adressing its main plot, concluding the narrative arc of one of the antagonist of the series. The emotional crescendo hits you like a truck, and the multi parts guitar solo is stellar. And fun fact, underlining its importance : it's the only Strive song that is not named after the lyrics. It's its own.

I adore the guitar solo because it really feels like a heart-to-heart, like you described. The guitar starts off sounding almost like weeping (6:26), Like she's, well, despairing. But after that the song picks up a more determined and uplifting sound (6:42), culminating in what i can only describe as "aggressive acceptance" (7:20). The last part of the solo sounds to me like it's integrating the melodies of the first, sad part and putting a rebellious, confident twist on it. I interpret this song as us watching her go through the (late) stages of grief. But who is she grieving? HERSELF. (Spoiler: I-No dies at the end of the Strive story.)

honestly, my favorite part of this is that when the song says "we are falling down slowy, like snow lead by gravity" its spaced out to stretch out certain syllables in a way that feels like yearning or reaching for something Above you. Like she's trying to grasp onto something but "gravity" is leading her lower and lower away from whatever it is she was reaching for. Maybe the "gravity" before was a metaphor for her humanity leading her away from the evil or self will she tried to be. "falling down slowly ... lead by "humanity" feels like it fits in line with her story and the last part of her song

This song just gets better and better for me, I think rn it's at my #2 or #3 spot in the Strive OST. I'm so glad you did this one, I suggested it in the comments a couple times, altho I assume your Guilty Gear fanatic patron is the reason this ultimately happened. You honestly barely scratched the surface of I-No in reading her personality section btw, she is such a legendary and yet simultaneously underrated antagonist, as are most boss characters in this series but her especially. She's a magical foci, which in the Guilty Gear universe is an entity or object infused with powerful human emotion. In I-Nos case, she manifested through the power of humanitys fervent wish for a brighter future during the war against humans and Gears. In her complete state she has unfathomable godlike power, but before she awakened she was found in the backyard by The Original who took half of her powers (and subsequently half of her human emotions with it) to protect the world from her. It's kind of hard to say I-No is a bad person despite her grievous crimes because her sole goal is based on averting a vision she has of a dull grey future awaiting humanity. In the story of Strive she manages to gain the other half of her powers back, and her plan was to use them to give every human on earth the exact same powers she has, to see what they'd do with it, and then keep restarting that process over again until she found a result where the world didn't pretty much immediately end. On another note: "Let's take some strawberries and go to the hill. If you want to see fireworks bring a cute scarf. These pictures in my head tell me a lot of stories. None of this is real." I-No was unaware of her origins as a foci until Jack-O revealed it to her, and in the process she showed I-No countless other "possibilities", basically other realities that could exist but don't. During Strive she recounts one of those possibilities to Jack-O. In it, she fell in love with a man named Will who had long blonde hair, "like a woman's". She made him out to be a good, sweet man who everyone would end up siding with. He was the type of man to throw a punch and then start crying. "I can't get anything out but tears". but then one day Will vanished without a trace. She vowed to never forget her memories with Will, and yet they were fuzzy due to never happening in this reality. During the climax of the final conflict of Strives story, Axl Low showed up and helped fight I-No until Sol managed to land a direct hit on I-Nos weak point with an incredibly powerful spell. As I-No was being destroyed, her and Axl, who had become unlikely acquaintances in Xrd, shared a back and forth, which made I-No realize Axl *was* Will, somehow. Axl Low cleared out his burrow in the UK of crime back in the 1990s but then time slipped to the 2180s due to a freak coincidence in the universes code that gave him I-Nos same time powers, and he was seperated from his partner Megumi, a woman with black hair and a mole on her cheek. It was a twist nearly 25 years in the making. With the power she had left, I-No performed a swap with the Megumi that Axl knew. Megumi was brought into the main reality and found Axl later after the climax, and I-No was sent to the "possibility", although as of Happy Chaos's arcade mode story she and Chaos both found a way back to the main reality, so we should see them again. But yeah, that reveal is a tear jerker. Despite the length of this comment, it's still a somewhat crude retelling of her full story so if it sounds a little plot hole-y that would be why lol. Oh edit: btw, this song is basically like a send off to her, because for awhile we thought she was completely dead. The lines about ascending up above the clouds, losing ones breath, and then falling down led by gravity is an apt description of her ascent to godhood in Strive, and then her subsequent destruction. "If I am to be swallowed by fate, then I must have fought well, praying that it will become the seed of new life". Gravity and falling snow are common metaphors in a couple of other Guilty Gear songs, namely Sol, Nagoriyuki and Asuka, and it's possible there's an intentional link there.

I'm always amazed how much you can interpretate from the themes and how accurate you end up being. Specially with a character like I-NO with so many nuances, even contradicting at times. You totally got it and it opens my mind to the way things like this can be conveyed through something so etherial like music (given that I see that you get those bits more often with the composition rather than the lyrics). It never fails to impress me and I hope you cover more Guilty Gear music in the future!

This song was a journey for me personally. I hated it when I first heard it, and I was a day one I-NO main in strive. (Cause she was hot guitar witch) But the theme didnt register with me or her game plan. This wasn't really a song I felt i could rush down the opponent with, so i opted for Leo's theme Hellfire for a good while. When I got the sound track, Requiem was a frame one skip for me. Then I heard people talking about Zato-1's theme, another frame one skip for me. It took me listening to the ending of Let Me Carve Your Way for me to appreciate that song. But Requiem still wasnt hitting for me. It wasn't til I noticed that I was unconciously singing along to it that I noticed maybe i do like it. So after a full year of being a hater of Requiem, I sat down and listened to it with nothing going on. And it was in that listen that Requiem shot up to top 3 in my brain. It really took active listening to appreciate this song for what it is. While I won't actively play it when gaming as I-NO, I still very much need rush down music, it is definitely in my top 3 of strive's sound track.

I dunno if you read the rest of the wiki page, but here’s a breakdown of her lore: I-No is basically a complete mistake by the realm of information called the Backyard, which during the war between humans and gears had a large amount of people hoping and dreaming of a brighter tomorrow. In order to store said hopes as information to prevent the world from collapsing, the Backyard put it all into one girl: Axl’s Girlfriend. Happy Chaos as The Original, before he went mad, split I-No’s power to prevent her from becoming a god and destroying humanity. Fast forward a bit and we find out that the reason I-No and Axl’s time powers happen is because what is essential their existential serial numbers overlapped, so they kind of have a funky existence through the timeline. Anyway we also find out that being an amalgamation of hopes for a “brighter tomorrow” was what gave I-No not only visions of a bleak future but also an overwhelming desire to avert that future. This is shown in the chorus of her theme in strive. In older games she even goes so far as just messing around with the timeline, just trying to figure out what sticks and what leads to a good future. She finds nothing, feeling empty in her pursuits, only finding some solace in following Asuka/That Man, who promises to guide humanity to a better future. During Strive she has basically found all this out and decides to recruit Happy Chaos to re-merge her power from within HC into herself and become a god and then turn every human into a god as well, so that nobody can ever feel dissatisfied with their lot, because as a god they can just make their dreams a reality. Thus, the end of her theme shows us her intent: if fate itself has to intervene, then she must have fought well and though her efforts were thwarted, she hopes that even this will mean a brighter future for people.

The craziest part about the lyrics is that she isn't lying. At all. She's literally just telling the listener her story in audio form. Her behavior and attitude matched against her motivations and honesty contrast so heavily to the point where the off kilter nature of the song struggles to really fully encapsulate it, but it also plays off the game's narrative of treating her as this mysterious, dangerous character for most the story when she constantly puts herself in plain view for everyone. She doesn't state her motivations often, but she often doesn't feel the need to. If you haven't watched strive's story, I do recommend you do. A lot of this song will make a lot of sense. Same with reading the wiki page to catch up with a couple prior games. Also, this song has been in my top 3 since strive's launch. It goes so underappreciated to the point its unreal

This is probably my favorite song in STRIVE. Partially because it’s just a good song and I’m an I-No shill, but mainly because it reminds me the most of Ishiwatari and Seiyama’s classic sound from GGXX.

@@MarcoMeatball that sounds rough. I am sorry for speaking for everyone, but I believe the sentiment will be shared. You can do it! Not sure if it will be through pious dedication or prolonged relaxation, but we believe in your strength to tear through the difficulties of the mondaine and withstand hardships of extraordinary alike!

To me, all of I-No's themes all have moments that sound optimistic or hopeful, but in a tragic way. Like there is a part of I-No that *could* be a hero, but she never becomes one. Not saying she is trying to be heroic or even wants to be, but that the potential is there.

In musical I have heard from Sideways you can Seperate all the character songs into "I am" Song and "I want" Song. Almost of the "Heroes" in Strive have I am song Songs that about the character Song that paint Basic look at the character. Sol and Ky songs barely dig into depth of their characters. But the Villians Exclusively have I want Songs. Happy Chaos, I-No, Nagoroyuki, Asuka-R

Okay sorta unpopular opinion, but I think you should listen to «BITE ME» from AJ DiSpiritos. It's not a video game song, but it has it's own moments that I think you can get by listening to the song and it's lyrics (as well as reading them). It's a pretty interesting thing in and on itself, even without context or visual. There're very low chanches you will do it, but if you will, think of it's lyrics not from the perspective of 1, but of 2. The voices are not helping

I think a interesting mix for a next video with you being a previous opera singer and this technically being a music theme for a video game is checking out and giving your thoughts about a 10 year anniversary of the FNAF 1 (song) that has had a orchestrated version to celebrate it, as this is also technically the 'official song' for the video game series. it's only about 5 minutes long however.
