hey gang, i just wanted to say how truly appreciative i am for everyone taking time out of their day to watch my silly little gay video. when i was first making this video my goal was to “hit 100 views within this month”, and i think it’s safe to say that goal was achieved. i can’t promise when my next video will be out, nor what that video will be about, but i can absolutely guarantee you that it’ll have the same level of care, time, and resources put into it. i would greatly appreciate if you stuck around to see what else i have cooking, and if you’re interested in any updates i highly recommend checking out my twitter. once again thanks to everyone for watching and i hope to see you soon !

First video of yours that I’m seeing due to my echo chambers of fighting game stuff and LGBTQ+ issues coming together in the best way. I have to say it’s an excellently crafted video. Hope to see more. I went to my first local fighting game meet-ups 1-2 months ago and saw many LGBTQ+ people there, which I was glad to see. 😁To me, even as a cis-gender person, it always means that I can be safe in a space when others feel that way too. ❤

I got recommended this vid by a socal local group. When I started at my local last year I immediately noticed way more diversity than other videogame events I've been to in the past (I was only familiar with online shooters at the time). I really appreciate you sharing your experience and other icons in the FGC. The welcoming aspect of the community benefits everybody and I experienced that first-hand when moving to a completely new state and fighting through some social anxiety. Makes a lot of sense that the social and self-improvement aspect of these games invites some of the most awesome people to play!

This is sorta a negative comment to make, but I think one of the most important parts of this phenomenon is that fighting games are built around people, and not ideas like esports. Esports are pushed to make themselves like real sports, with all the money and advertising and teams, and that means they need INVESTORS, while fighting games have been entirely a community effort. If a person in esports proves too controversial regarding their identity, they likely wouldn't be contracted on. I don't think we'll ever get someone as open as Sonicfox in esports, because the more conservative funds providers would dislike who would be getting this money.
@goIdy
@goIdy 4 ай бұрын
while it does suck to say, you’re absolutely right. there’s a reason a majority of the gender/sexual minority tournaments (in traditional esports) are completely funded by their communities, and that’s that big companies aren’t willing to invest in that as it’s a big risk for them. it’s also super unpopular to a large majority of these games overseas audience, so in the companies eyes, it’s a lose lose situation a lot of the time.
@Shodan130
@Shodan130 3 ай бұрын
Strongly disagree honestly, like if the fgc had a player as open as donk people would be screaming for him to get banned at events especially in the modern fgc. The reason why fgc’s isn’t esports is because the games don’t evolve so much as change entirely. Sf2 and sf6 have nothing in common except for the name. Legacy tekken and nu tekken are entirely different games. Don’t even start on strive and real guilty gear. While in esports like Dota and cs, if you played dota all stars or cs1.6. Odds are if you play Dota 2 or cs2 right now the game isn’t gonna be that much different
@larrydupp3988
@larrydupp3988 3 ай бұрын
@@Shodan130 I have been looking up this Donk kid for like 30 minutes and I do not understand why people would want to ban him. Is he super omega trans or something I do not understand. Also yeah the differently numbered games are different so of course they'll be different, SF2 came out 30some years ago. Plus this is a comment about the economics of the FGC vs Esports.

@@larrydupp3988 mate Dota and CS also came out near 30 years ago. Like late 90’s. That’s my point the games have changed very little since their inception. While fighting games are constantly changing which is something people don’t look for in a spot. People wouldn’t play football if you could use your hands for 7 years then you had to use a stick for the next 7. And with donk I mean the trash talking. The fgc you can’t even pop off without people trying to get you out.

Your conclusion at the end of the video really spoke to me, I have so much appreciation for the fgc because of the space and community provides. fighting games (for me atleast) are about accepting yourself and improving upon the aspects you feel can be improved upon, and then always being open to helping others get better at their craft no matter their walks of life. I'm not particularly good about putting how I feel about fighting games into words but they're very important to me and many others. This was an awesome video that really reinforced the goodwill I feel for the fgc. :)

It's not even just "gay people" either, it's minority groups in general. Fighting games have a lot more PoC (in fact, usually I see just as much, if not more black people in major tournaments in the West compared to team based esports where I can probably count the number of black players on my hand for LoL or the such) and cis women competing at a high level too I honestly can't think of any other explanation than minority groups being attacked for being minorities than them not being seen as much in team games
@dominiccasts
@dominiccasts 4 ай бұрын
From talking to PoC people about it, it's more a question of urban and suburban racial demographics in the US. Because arcades only really work in heavily populated areas, and because of the White Flight, US cities have a much higher proportion of PoC than the suburbs. Therefore, more of them grew up playing in the arcades than white people did, thus a higher proportion of PoC playing fighting games now. The inverse seems probably true for other Esports games, since most of those are on PC, which were (and really still are) really bloody expensive, so you'd have seen more people in the wealthier suburbs (i.e. white people, because, again, White Flight) with them than in the cities, thus creating the foundations for self-reinforcing community feedback loops. Doesn't help that a lot of PC gamers are notoriously racist/sexist/etc. as you'd kinda expect from people living in the suburbs, but I don't know how much that part affects things.
@ShouPow
@ShouPow 2 ай бұрын
@@dominiccastsI mean as a "suburban" (in central Jersey suburban isn't exactly the same as suburban in other parts) POC queer myself mine and my family's experience with gaming was linked to home consoles. While a select few cousins liked WrestleMania & winback, the whole family got involved when we played Tekken, smash, mortal kombat, or killer instinct. I think the diversity of characters (or at least non eurocentric nature of them) is what made those fighting games so appealing. You can express yourself through the way they look AND through the move sets you use. Those same cousins I mentioned also only played as Ryu, link, or scorpion while most of the rest of us tried out everyone.. and I stuck with Raiden, katana, or peach 💖 The urban arcade theory sounds acceptable but the nature of an arcade is existing where people have disposable income, so regardless of locale that income is necessary to participate, unfortunately. I do think the larger driving factor is representation/the pursuit of something that's new/not another rehash of our (relatively) boring American reality. This is an anecdote but in addition to what I said: a lotta sports averse, honors class type kids exist who are the children of immigrants in suburbs. Video games are an excellent source of cognitive development and imaginary play behavior that fully did not exist in such a way prior. Even with tabletop RPGs you're limited to the mental scope of yourself or your DM. Games authored with a diverse perspective (compared to standard American perceptions) kinda forced the normative masses to accept that WE (anyone non normative, POC, queers, women, disabled folks) exist and can beat your ass. It's subversive in a very cool way, imo.
@dominiccasts
@dominiccasts 2 ай бұрын
@@ShouPow Huh, I never thought of that about what games mean, but that tracks really well. Granted, it would probably also go some way to explaining why video games, and effort put into being really good at video games, is looked down on, though I expect that's mostly because the standard American perspective is that anything that doesn't give you money is a waste of time, even if the disproportionate number of non-normative, especially neurodivergent, people playing them is a factor.

Well there are less of us in the west. If we are around 14.4%, we can't be represented everywhere. Sports Games ( Madden, 2K, etc..) Fighting Games (Atlanta, Florida, NY/NJ/Cali have strong scenes with PoCs) FPS Actual Sports to play in college and professional leagues. (Overrepresented) Its not about being attacked, its about which game will get you to where you want to go. Fighting games don't require you to get to Master Rank to qualify for the biggest tournaments in the world. It helps a lot but the format is pretty open in certain regions. We need team based fighting games! Team of 3 needs to be good Daisuke!

My theory: to fully experience fighting games, you have to *regularly* go out and meet other people, and when you meet a lot of other people, there's going to be a lot of different people. Same reason there's a larger queer population in Magic the Gathering and DnD than say Star Wars or Marvel. These games also basically require some form of self expression and way you play. Even in Magic, two people can run the same deck and have the same hand and draw the same cards, but they can both play completely differently. And that's not even considering what deck you want to play and if you want to build one. DnD is basically self-expression: the game, and we all know how Umisho and Leffen both play Happy Chaos differently. And when a game not only rewards but REQUIRES expression, people who feel the need to express what they've hidden their whole life will express it.

One of my best friends is a transgirl speedrunner and also a fem presenting gamer and she’s easily the sickest, coolest, person I know as someone who’s hardly a speedrunner at the moment due to newly gained anxiety about submitting runs, moreso a ‘how fast can I do this and show my cool friend I did this’ runner. Speedrunning is another aspect of gaming where, holy shit, there’s so many trans women everywhere. They’re in Minecraft top 100’s, they’re making discoveries in Zelda games, my friend and I used to sit around trying to figure out fun glitches to use to beat PRs in plenty of games or how to perform them consistently, she taught me how to do plenty of glitches that I’m still actively using when I play for fun and we learned, together, what happens under certain games maps and have talked about game design, something she knows about far more than me, for hours upon hours. There’s a large queer community in gaming, including the worst harassment ones, and finding those people. Sometimes through league of legends. Sometimes you meet a really cool transgirl who eventually teaches you how to use the controls of games you’ve only played on controller with mouse and keyboard in the middle of a league of legends match in unranked. Sometimes you meet a lesbian couple you become best friends with on Overwatch because you decided to be nice to the Ana player in qp. Sometimes those lesbians are… really good at overwatch, not professional but way better than you, that’s for sure. There’s such a wonderful community of record breakers and not amongst the gaming populous and while I’ve met half the trans community I know through Guilty gear fan pages or discords and so on, we are everywhere and we will be visible as there starts being more of us in the big leagues, which will happen, I know it will.

There are honestly so many factors. Fighting games have always been more diverse, also having a disproportionately large black audience compared to other genres. Played internationally, with large rosters of characters designed to have broad appeal. Meritocracy, one on one, with a focus on mutual improvement. And just bonding over shared interest.

I think another note to the whole point about character selection, is how characters in the fighting game community are uniquely important. Their designs are incredibly deep and without bans or needs for teamcomps, maining a character is simply the way to go. In a competitive environment this often leads to people becoming synonymous with characters, placing an outstanding amount of meaning on the them.

Life long gamer, nonbinary... the FGC has been one of the most welcoming, kind, supportive communities I've ever been a part of. I play Tekken mainly, though on a break because of computer issues (GAAH I NEED A NEW ONE SO BAD), among a variety of other games. I've never seen a community ask for your pronouns, let alone highlight them as proudly as I have here. On top of that, I've never seen a community self police bigotry in the way the FGC has, with even the game creators like Ishiwatari basically telling bigots to get over themselves or play something else. It's amazing how incredible simply being seen and appreciated feels.

Watching this and hearing you talk about how important representation in media is makes me think of one time I came across a video essay talking about how wanting to be represented in media is “narcissistic” or some shit. This was around the time where I think I saw a lot more conservative opinions online and didn’t know enough to know that they were stupid, so I was planning on watching it, but ended up being too lazy to really start it. I’m so glad my fuckin ADHD brain prevented me from watching that because I would hate to have my opinions on representation formed by that video. I enjoy making gay characters to represent others, and although I haven’t really made any finished stories yet, i would love to hear that one of my characters helped an actual person out with their identity.

@@familiarnamemissing3382 When the established lore for the boy dressing like a girl has him repeatedly correcting anyone who mistakes him for a girl, repeatedly stating that how he dresses doesn't make him any less of a man, and working as a bounty bounter to ultimately disprove a superstition about his existence as a boy being a bad omen, it's only logical that having the newest official lore state that the boy now identifies as a girl is bound to raise some eyebrows. This is where complaints about Bridget come from, it has nothing to do with gender or sexual orientation. Venom was created and added to Guilty Gear before Bridget, he's been gay the whole time, everyone knows, no one ever cared. If Bridget was trans from the start, people wouldn't complain either. Character retcons are the problem.
