Not only a sublime voice , but an intelligent and technically flawless interpretation. No one comes close. Norman was a vocal phenomenon hard to replace. Her mature musicianship always adds more colour to her interpretation.

@@remigioidavidshe's so musical. I listen to mezzos after her singing this and it's like they have no command of their own interpretation, as if they're afraid the conductor may not agree with their instincts to do any ritardandi, anything. It's rushed through.

I was privileged to sing D. Of F. in the Westminster Symphonic Choir back in the mid 70's with a younger Jessye Norman.& James Levine conducting. The aria brought ovations and I have followed her career for my entire life. Rest in peace dear Jessye. 🌹

Jessy Norman chanta Dalila comme aucune autre . Cette voix chaleureuse , profonde , d'une qualité supérieure , était faite pour ce rôle, peu chanté sur les scènes internationales. Tout y est, dans cette interprétation: somptuosité du timbre, insolent contrôle du souffle, splendeur du phrasé, incarnation du personnage, articulation du texte et... un orchestre et un chef aux petits oignons. Berlioz en aurait sans doute oublié son Harriet pour se jeter aux pied de Jessye.

I was privileged to perform this work with the Westminster symphonic choir back in the 70's with Boulez & the then- newly up & coming in the US Jessye Norman. She sounded just like this,,,her voice her presence made me forget where I was in the music, overwhelmed Alice Tully Hall

I still can't believe that she is gone. It just boggles the mind. I have been able to hear and meet some of the great singers/conductors, but the one time she was in my city performing I was on the other side of the planet...literally. She is no longer here, but that voice will live on forever!

Joyce didonato does have a different voice-type ... but it ain't on the same magnificent & grand-scale as Norman ! AND that is, for better or worse, what opera singing has always been. _The Baroque Singers were the End-All & Be-All of this 400 + years' Vocal-Gift from Italy to the World._ _Mussolini's embarrassment to Italy can almost be forgiven._

Interesting point. We can (safely?) assume that Callas did not have nearly as many recordings as Norman, because of the expense of recordings at the early stage of records. Ms. Norman and her wondrous voice was a gift to us. She had such command of her beautiful, powerful voice she would transport you--to make you FEEL the story she was conveying. As we suffer through this global pandemic we shelter in place and we pray for Mercy and Healing. We are thankful for Ms Norman's gift of song to transport our spirits and comfort us in these trying times. We thank the Heavenly Father for having placed her amongst us, a Grand Diva. Brava, Brava.

I watched this live at the time, and recorded it on video and watched it over and over again. Poor sound here, but no matter! Such a large voice with no trace of a wobble!

I saw her in a few operas (e.g.Parsifal) and was not as impressed as when she was singing a recital or an oratorio. The last time in the Gent Cathedral a recital that I will never forget.
