None of the current crop of screeching sopranos or flaccid tenors can compare to these giants. I worry about the future of opera.

Agree! It’s with these modern techniques that clearly aren’t working creating constriction and nasally sounds. If that technique is not working, then don’t keep using it. Stick with what still works then.

This is one of the finest recordings of Gwyneth Jones I have ever heard. The top rings out fearlessly and wobble-free. She was a wildly inconsistent artist, but the period of roughly 1986 to 1992 was a good one for her. I saw her in San Francisco as the Dyer's Wife in 1987, and it was like a different voice: no wobble and fearlessly attacked top notes, with no scooping. Ditto for her 1990 Brünnhilde in Siegfried. When she was on form, no one could touch her. I saw both her and Nilsson live, and Jones' voice was actually larger. Nilsson's voice cut through the orchestra like a sword with a sharp edge, but Jones' voice effortlessly rode OVER the orchestra. I saw her as Elektra in 1992, and on more than one occasion she came close to drowning out the orchestra. Her scene with Klytämnestra(Helga Dernesch) was incredible, both vocally and dramatically.

I only heard Jones live a couple time, and her singing was -- as you say -- inconsistent. BUT one of those performances was a Gotterdammerung at the Met in 1993, and even if the voice wasn't always compliant with her interpretation, all I can say that all the other women I have heard sing Brunnhilde should take acting lessons from Dame Gwynneth! She was riveting, and her Immolation scene was very moving. (The way she sang "Ruhe du gott" was transcendent!) I'll stick to recordings to know her at her best vocally, but my recollection of her performance was of an unforgettable artist.

I agree.And MacNeil,before he developed that wobble,had unbelievable resonance all the way up and down the scale. He was a great Verdi baritone. I liked him almost as much as my own favorite dramatic baritone,the wonderful Ettore Bastianini,who died very young.

I think she was singing this with Placido Domingo who has never been comfortable with the high C. Had she been singing it with Franco Corelli, Jussi Bjoerling, or even Giuseppe Di Stefano, they would have held the note longer.

I don't understand why you would include Sutherland Db at the age of 63. When her E in her 30s was maybe 4 times as loud.
@williammaddox3339
@williammaddox3339 Жыл бұрын
The high Db is quite loud; I don't think she ever sang a high note that was even twice as loud, much less 4 times as more powerful.

Nilsson doesn't "prepare" her high notes, or perhaps the term is "scoop." (I'm not an expert. Perhaps someone can tell me the correct term.) She just hits the note right at the correct pitch.
