Incredible! Well thought out and executed! I'm especially impressed with the great brass scratch build. It will be interesting to see if the valve works as well with the larger hopper. Look forward to seeing the final version.

This is really Awesome! will make model railroading allot more realistic and fun. Enjoy all the times you can doing this with your Dad. I use to work on a layout with my father, then I got away from it and he and I stopped altogether. saying we would get back to it sometime. how ever my Father recently passed away. and I really regret stopping, and wish I could work on a layout with him again, but sadly that will never be. So please spend all the time you can with your Father, and treasure every moment.

The cable name you are referring to in the video was sometimes called a choke cable. Some modelers used them to also activate switches as well. The name derives from the fact that way back "In the day" when I was young, cars would have carburetors with a manual choke knob on the dashboard. When cold starting, the cable would be pulled out, then pushed back in when the engine warmed up.

Very cool! One thing that I would recommend doing would be to add a lip or something to the incoming side of the chute so that in the case it does contact a car it will not damage anything and just ride on top, this is something that some of the prototypes do.

FANTASTIC, was thinking about that myself. Very good. Now the next part is coal cars that empty like their real counterparts. I'm figuring that out also. The opperating units will work for coal, sand, gravel, on my layout. Coal loaded at the mine, and emptied at the powerplant, Gravel loaded at the pit, and emptied at the delivery yard, sand, the same way. Working models for interesting actions on the layout. Thanks for the idea here.

Looks good. I had an engineering lab in the fall where we used a micro controller an IR LED / Detector to test distances. You could fully automate that loader with two sets of IR Detectors (Car detector (chute to top if no car) and height).

I'm working on building something almost exactly like this for my layout. Only less modern looking. (i'm a steam era kind of guy) I already made a built to fit model of the butler coal and oil coal unloading track in Butler NJ for unloading the cars. (i have bottom dump cars) This gave me many ideas to fine tune the coal loading process. Can't wait to see the how your finished product looks.

Hey there this is a great model well thought out and practical; it looks like a lot of fun too. You didn't mention when to stop the flow of coal so the hopper can take the residual. It will be good to see it fully operational. 10 out of 10. guy
@signalman7111 жыл бұрын
Awesome project. Have you thought about doing a write-up for this project and sending it to model railroader magazine or model railroad hobbyist (mrhmag.com). Can't wait to see finished project. @GunMetalJeep4511 жыл бұрын
Great job man! You must be an engineer too ;)!!! I have built a couple of these that worked well but never as good as this. I think that the brass hopper and mechanism was the trick. @mrk107510 жыл бұрын
That is cool! All you need now is a coal rotary railcar dumper to dump the coal out of the coal car on to a conveyor belt that will send the coal back up to the coal loader. : ) If I make a coal loader like this one I will probably just scratch build the whole thing out of wood and use a RC Servo to open and close the hopper.
