Love Nikk- many prayers headed his way for a speedy recovery. His quick smile, his humor, his obvious love of flying- I hope his down time is short, but, glad that he's still among us- a great addition to your wide and varied group, Trent. Obviously, the accident was caused by hypothermia. It must've been hard to fly in the cold and imposing shadow of TRENT PALMER, heating vents would've helped that scene. Thanks for the numbers, and, the insights of the 915 iS. It's easy to forget all of the FADEC tech, dual alternators, engineering and planning that went into the design/build of that motor. I agree, it's super well considered from all aluminum construction to dual ECU's, programming, etc... I will admit that I'm a little sad that it lost some of it's zippy, fighter characteristics, but, the slight forward C of G will have that stabilizing effect, the increased weight (inertia) along with no modifications of wing or tail feathers will net out a little less responsive overall. It looks friggin awesome (love the carbon V on the front cowling!), it climbs like Draco -OK, almost like Draco, and, I adore the teddy bear in the mouth of that rangy fox... I sense a purchase in my near future! I enjoyed the cub vs. fox ribbing, but- let's be honest- they're BOTH great planes! (Don't tell Cory or STOL Pilot Quinn I said that tho!) Hey, we need a house update soon. Can't wait til you're flying out of your driveway... Thanks for the info, we've all been waiting! Dave P.S. Thanks for the Garmin G3X input, I found it very insightful. I like the way it integrates firewall forward, it seems to mate up well with the Rotax engine, which seems to be well planned in case of failure...THEY seem to work well together...

I’ve said it so many times before but there is no reason an engine should cost anywhere near that price. I have intimate knowledge of an automotive engine plant. Modern auto engines are fully digitally controlled direct fuel injection, drops cylinders for fuel efficiency, active engine mounts for vibration control. All in all way more complex than an aircraft engine. You can buy the engine and the nice SUV it goes in for what you pay for an aircraft engine and the auto company is still making a profit at Tha cost. No way a rotary should cost 38K.
@TrentonPalmer5 жыл бұрын
CreekBoy, the issue is in the low quantities these engines are made in. If you figure they have a similar development cost to an automobile engine, yet only sell 1/100th of what GM or Ford would sell, then they are going to have to up the cost of each engine to offset that. Same goes with production, small runs always cost significantly more per unit than large runs. Which is why we need to grow Aviation, get more people flying and buying airplanes and engines and then the costs can go down! The other issue is building to and testing for FAA and other aviation authority standards which costs a lot of money to do yet again adding to the cost of the engine.
@brandonthompson99575 жыл бұрын
@@creekboy2893 Trent's being polite, but man you sure have some nearsided views if you believe that the cost isn't appropriate. A lot more goes into these engines than the literal materials...

The difference between engine and motor as explained to me in tech school is that a motor gets its power to turn from an external source (i.e. electricity ) where as an engine uses fuel to create the energy it converts to rotational force internally (I.e. gas turbines, rotaries and reciprocal piston engines). Now, because that fuel comes from an external source (a gas tank), people have used the term interchangeably for automotive maritime and aviation power plants.

Hoping for the best for Nikk. Great review as usual, I fully agree with you that the 915iS is the most advanced light aircraft engine today. You mentioned most highlights of the technological aspect but I could not hear the fact that it employes additionally to a turbo, an intercooler, i. e. I cannot see where it could be further improved, maybe on direct injection? Keep up the excellent work.
@fpvdee60495 жыл бұрын
Direct injection isn't always best.. there is blow by in valves, getting small amounts of oil in the intakes, port injection passes gasoline through the intake valves cleaning them. Direct Injection often leaves very gummy residue on intake valves that requires a solution to resolve. Thats why most auto makers are now using Direct, and Port injection

I’m guessing a departure stall. But I could be way off base. It’s poor of me to speculate because I wasn’t there. I apologize. That happened to a good friend of mine in Weed CA years ago in a T-craft. Trying to follow a much better pilot after take off, he just turned and pulled too hard. The ground comes up and will “smite thee” very fast when that happens. My other friend, the really experienced pilot whipped around and landed. The local EMS (Weed CA is fairly remote) people of the time, late 1970s, were getting ready to use a cutting torch to get him out of the wreckage. Fortunately my pilot friend told to them to GTFOOT! That saved my other friends life. He had chemical burns from the AvGas dripping on his legs for so long. The torch would have finished him off. He broke his neck but no paralysis. Screwed up both ankles, broken ribs, etc. but he was young and, literally, indestructible. Ironically the landing gear was so undamaged that we used it on another T-craft rebuild. Later that summer, my boss told me to take the fabric to the burn pit (hey, it was the 70s) and incinerate it. I was young and dumb and nobody told me it was nitrated dope on the fabric. I lit it. It burned fast and a few sparks came out and hit the rest of the fabric...outside of the pit. It burnt faster than a firecracker fuse. Remember those old cartoons where the fabric burnt off the airframe in a few seconds while the character was flying? That’s literally how fast it burnt. Watch Hindenburg footage to get a perspective. Anyways. My friend healed. Flew again and has recently retired as an ATC controller from Seattle Center. I pray that Nikk, your friend, will follow the same fortunate path and live a great life. Given a chance, the human body is incredibly resilient. Sincerely, MSM MD

I feel, out of tremendous respect, that I need to point out the pilot who my friend that crashed in Weed CA was following, and saved him from being burned to death, soloed me a year later during the summer, in a 110 HP Bellanca Citabria. 1/2 price as an employee. $15.00 per hour. Wow. Every day he flew sitting behind me, he would stomp a hard rudder when I least expected it and at very inopportune times. For a while it really pissed me off, but I got accustomed to bad things happening quickly....and reacting quickly. In retrospect, I believe it was his way of ensuring that the same mistake my other friend made wouldn’t happen to me. He was a 3rd generation crop duster. He was teaching me to fly a few months after his father died flying a C-117 at a California forest fire when the wing buckled. It was his father’s T-Craft he was flying that day in Weed CA when my other friend crashed. I never knew his Dad had been killed that summer until a couple of years ago at my Dad’s funeral wake. He survived a long career as a crop-duster and then as a forest fire airplane pilot. Now he flies a self-made wealthy man’s warbirds around. I’m jealous but incredibly happy for him and feel privileged to know him. He’s my personal, “Chuck Yeager” who could fly anything, friend. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qom2pmloicx6gdE

Motor vs Engine? I say we let Nikk decide. Old-timer engineering definition: Engine - converts the form of energy you have into the form of energy you need. So, chemical energy into rotary motion, solar radiation into steam power, etc. Motor- converts energy into "relative motion". So, all motors are engines, not all engines are motors. Relative motion is the key. You might use a gasoline engine to spin a generator. The thing that moves a Tesla down the road is an electric motor but it is also technically an engine.

A question about avionics. I'm specifying the airplane I'm planning to buy. I started with a system based around the Garmin G3X like you, but then I started looking at what data costs over long periods of time. I found that the company that creates and sells the data for Dynon sells a *lifetime* subscription to data updates one day each year, on Black Friday. Over time, this seems like a savings of thousands of dollars. The "price" is, I'd have to configure a system around the Dynon Skyview HDX and (mostly/entirely) Dynon components. Since I've never owned (or flown) an airplane with GPS before, all these issues are new to me. So my question for Trent or anyone who knows is... how much do you spend per year for data? And is there really any significant difference between Dynon systems and Garmin systems? From what I can tell, the differences are small. From my naive point of view, after reading documents about both systems, each seems to have some advantages. PS: Seems they don't have room for a 915iS in my airplane, so I'll have to settle for the 912iS like I've been planning. Oh well. :-) On the bright side, I do prefer the 2000 hour TBO of the 912iS versus the 1200 hours TBO of the 915iS. I wonder why the difference. Best wishes to Nikk. We all hope for as quick and complete a recovery as is possible under the circumstances.
@andrewmorris34795 жыл бұрын
I run the Dynon HDX everyday and while it's a capable and powerful system, it still can't match the fluidity, speed, and build quality of the G3X touch. The autopilot servos aren't even close to Garmin's. My quick thoughts!

My prayers are with Nikk and his recovery, I see he made some comments on Reddit..That's a great sign!! Very interested in the details..keep up the Vids..Thanks!!!

Prayers offered. Don't fly, but been on bikes +40 years, I get it. Life ain't safe unless you just sit and rot, and that gets you too.

Sitting rotting it's not safe 42 year old co-worker I knew was like that he had no hobbies except working and sitting at home. He developed a sore neck thought it was just a flu after some weeks not going away went to the doctor. Doctor put him on a few antibiotics after a month no change he goes back they do some more testing find out he has something in his throat. More time goes by he can't get into gastro doctor now he can't swallow food has to eat from a blender. He goes to the ER they do a bunch of test tell him he is full of cancer won't live 2 weeks. He lasted one week died the following weekend you never know what will happen in life. Live life like it's your last week on earth do what you love to do.

The brain trust at Rotax knew what they doing working out a deal to get this incredible “motor” into your hands and Freedom Fox. I love the technology, the performance and , hopefully, your subsequent videos seem to say the reliability has proven to be there. Congrats to you as it appears since you recorded this, the Freedom Fox has become “America’s Airplane”. Looking forward to many more great videos.

Lycomings/Continentals are peculiar anachronisms to see sold new in 2018, but they all have aluminum cases. Even the old little J-3 C65s are aluminum cases, many welded back together over the years. Also there are modern-ish FADEC Lycomings coming to an airliner near you soon (Cape Air).

So sorry to hear of Nikk's accident, wishing him well and hope he gets full function back to his feet and legs. Look forward to an analysis of what happened but from your comments it sounds like "The Base to Final (Booby Trap) Turn" well described in Jim Alsip's 5 minute video kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYq7Y5KDjax3aM0 and something every pilot should make sure he fully understands and its importance at low altitudes as that trap is no respecter of experience, it catches the novice, it catches pilots with thousands of hours. Oh and I love your new refitted Kitfox, look forward to your endeavors and exploits in that baby.

Engine / motor. That's why they have been called 'motor cars' in Britain, and we can go 'motoring'. The French use the word 'moteur' for the engine, and that's where the word 'motor' comes from. People also talk about motive force, motivation, and mobility for the same reason. In English, all engines release energy from a fuel and move to do work. That's why we have electric motors for moving things by using purely electricity. But an electric engine would specifically generate electricity by burning a fuel, or by using the potential energy of a weight, spring, air or water stream. But that's all pedantic. When push comes to shove, it doesn’t usually matter which word we use. The important thing with communication is that the recipient understands what the deliverer means. We might baulk internally when a grammatically incorrect word is used, but if you understand what was intended to be conveyed, then the goal has been achieved. Forgive and move on. Life's too short for petty squabbles. Smoeone mihgt cmopletley scarmble spleling, but teh hamun biran sitll copmrehends setnences! It's amazing, really. 😉

I really enjoy your videos. One thing you need change though. The graphic of your plane on your opening credits doesn't reflect your "new plane." ;). Glad your buddy Nick is ok and mending.

I'm so sorry to hear about Nikk's incident. My prayers for his recovery! I follow you because you're to aircraft what my posse was to boats and sailing around Cape Ann. We understand the camaraderie. I hope that his recovery is swift and he gets back in the air soon. Nikk is proof to never take things for granted and let a casual attitude spoil your day! Good job on the Cub Killer. Need some more details on that engine couling. Where's the Flying Cowboys decal? Are you going to replace the wheel windows on the lower fuselage?

Given the nature of Nikk's injuries and the type of flying you do, are you considering wearing a helmet while flying ? Ag tractor pilots do.
