I served 3 and a half years in the Rhodesian Army during the bush war. My father was a Selous Scout. We were proud to be Rhodesians and to serve our country. Sad memories of friends who were killed in action. RHODESIANS never die. They just get older.

Hello everyone! I would like to first thank 5RR for recommending me on his community tab. He has introduced my content to hundreds or even thousands of new viewers! All of you have convinced me to work on another Rhodesian project: Operation Dingo. I am still early in the script writing phase, but I am aiming to have a finished video in 2-3 weeks. On another note, the engagement on this video has been spectacular, especially in terms of feedback. The vast majority of more constructive feedback is predicated upon my bias/framing of ZANLA and ZANU by extension. My objective in this video was to cover Eland in as objective of a manner as possible. Based on your feedback, it is evident that I should have gone into more detail on ZANLA. The armed wing of ZANU was a Maoist (Communist) revolutionary army which aimed to uproot Rhodesian society (capitalist imperialism and white supremacy in its own view) by any means necessary. In this regard, they often resorted to fear tactics such as targeting civilians and isolated farmsteads. Therefore, when I refer to them as "Zimbabwean Freedom Fighters" it was meant as a descriptor. I have since used the terms "ZANLA Personnel" or "ZANLA soldiers." If you have any further criticism of my framing please leave it under this comment. Cheers!

Hi. Although ZANLA was armed and trained by China, and ZIPRA received weapons and training from the Soviet Union, the blacks who joined their ranks were primarily African nationalists who fought against Rhodesia because they wanted to end white minority rule. White rule had positive and negative effects for the blacks. For example, Rhodesia’s African population grew rapidly, partly because tribal warfare ended and because the government built hospitals, houses and schools for Africans, as also happened in South Africa. However, many of Rhodesia’s blacks resented the discriminatory aspects of the Rhodesian way of life, such as white-only regiments like the RLI, and the segregated suburbs and segregated government schools. Ian Smith acknowledged that discrimination existed in the following speech in 1976: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKSqeKihpsZjY68

The term 'Freedom fighters' was a term used by the Left sympathisers of Mugabe (in particular). Did they win freedom? Well compare the two countries (Rhodesia and Zimbabwe) and the answer is clear: both blacks and whites were far better under Ian Smith than ever they were under Mugabe. Mugabe suffocated any hint of freedom and prosperity.

@@AnecdotesofHistory No, this is not the point. Zapu and Zanu together won the propaganda war, by using euphemisms/terminology that would be most likely to earn them support from 'globalists'. We see a modern equivalent in the use of the term 'Black lives matter', and who wouldn't support that. Neither the RLI, nor the SAS, nor the Selous Scouts (check elsewhere for the correct pronunciation) ever lost a single contact. But through naivety on our part, and other factors, we lost the propaganda war. The war of words was there was just as important, as it is in America today. Very few Zanla or Zipra were actual soldiers, they were largely insurgents. Towards the end, some Zipra units were trained for a conventional warfare invasion of Rhodesia, though this never eventuated. Incidentally, Zipra were by far the better fighters (than Zanla).

The Rhodesian Army was the most competent, well trained and motivated Army in Africa. The Men where Anglo Saxon Protestants in culture and very few egregious events happened at all. The Marxist terrorists, however, brutalized, murdered and hacked their way to victory. This fight was a righteous fight that was lost due to overwhelming odds. Zimbabwe today is a horrid basket case of despair and disrepair, whilst most Rhodesian and their descendants are successful people in Australia, SA, the UK and New Zealand. They where the ones who turned the country into something useful, and that is now gone.

Um......NO! Those accolades go to the South Africans I'm afraid. The Rhodesian's were pretty good at counter insurgency and that's it. The exploits of the South Africans against the cubans in Angola were the biggest battles fought on African soil since WW2. And the South Africans thrashed them even though being outnumbered over 20 to 1 in most of the major battles. Regarding counter insurgency the South African Police COIN units successes against swapo terrorists resulted in far greater enemy kills than all of the Rhodesian kills by all units combined. Granted the SAP did learn these skills in Rhodesia.

Trust me, with the exception of RLI Fireforce, all security forces used "black is beautiful" skin dye or camo cream. It was to make you harder to be seen especially at night. Whilst you caused that split second of indecision in your enemy if gave you the drop to start shooting 1st. When you are operating in a four man "stick" & commonly having firefights with 20-30 terrs it's best that you start shooting 1st. So "black face" gave us that vital lead time

At the time ZANLA was an insurgency group. Not a formally constituted army. Part of the Selous Scout's tactics was to be pretend insurgents. Even when they went into Mozambique at times they were usually dressed as insurgents. They also had strict orders not to tangle with Frelimo unless the later interfered in their operations. And yes sometimes they dressed like Frelimo because Frelimo provided military aid to ZANLA. This was done to get close in to ZANLA and to strike effectively using subterfuge and surprise.

Over all, I think that you are missing the reality of the situation. The terrorists were being funded and trained by Russia, China, and north Korea, while given food, medical supplies and political and economic support by Europe and America. At the same time South Africa was becoming strained in within their own borders. Regardless of what Rhodesia did they would have been alone and isolated, attacking the base did destroy a vast amount of weapons and equipment that was being prepared to be used in Rhodesia. While we cannot know what would have been, I suspect that those munitions would have been used to kill even more Rhodesian civilians, of all races, and no other meaningful effect on the war would have happened as the delay of isolation from not attacking the base would have been offset by the literal army on their doorstep.

Operation Eland was a disaster for Rhodesia, because it caused problems for South Africa's John Vorster, who was trying to develop good relations with Mozambique. Vorster was already fighting a war in South West Africa and Angola, and what with the disastrous killing of dozens of black school children in Soweto, desperately need to improve his relationship with the West. Vorster, after operation Eland, wanted nothing more to do with Smith, and pulled all South African troops out of Rhodesia and stopped the export of petrol to that country. It was the beginning of the end for Smith. Desperate phone calls from Smith to Vorster went unanswered. "Settle with Britain!" screamed the South African leader.

John Vorster was a nazi sympathizer during WW11 and wasn't very popular in SA. At a rugby test at Loftus the tv camera picked out Smithy sitting next to Vorster. The crowd cheered and when it panned to JV, the crowd booed.

Rubbish! Absolute nonsense. The South African government never stopped the supply to Rhodesia of any materiel or fuel or ammunition. At all! Vorster did withdraw the South African Police from Rhodesia but PW Botha took over in 1978 and he increased the aid and sent the SADF in. As for the shooting of school children in 1976......well the lesson there is don't send your children to murder, rape, pillage, burn and rampage. And most definitely do not use your children as human shields during rioting.

@@AnecdotesofHistory Do look at South Africa's involvement in Angola. They fought big tank battles to the east of Cuito Cuinavale in the Tumpo Triangle. Buy a book (Kindle) called The SADF and Cuito Cuanavale on Amazon or the The South African Defence forces in the border war 1966-1989 by Leopold Schultz. There is enough material in there to make quite a few videos. And have you done Rhodesian Operation Uric? The attack on Mapai. Contact me if you need to know how to pronounce words etc and if you do videos on South Africa in Angola do not use the term 'Apartheid South Africa'. That goes down like a lead balloon among ex servicemen. Good luck. Finally have you seen the fighting men of Rhodesia series on KZbin. Pretty sure apartheid was over and power sharing was beginning in South Africa already. You've got to be careful about the history we were taught in school, as we can all see now there's been some agendas for quite a long time and the geo political framing of South Africa is not correct in the history books in the schools. And this may seem nitpicky but it's actually very important because the people behind all that, people starting and benefiting most importantly from these wars and the new power structure with the strong man, were the same people in general, if not directly, supporting the fighters coming in to SA and what's now Zimbabwe. As we can see now this country has been, now im speaking of America, which also means Great Britain, has been infiltrated for a very long time through the banking and corporate interests it's been infiltrated with what's called communism, also a creation of the bankers and they use this to fire up people to go to war and even die and kill others in order to change up the world's chessboard and in retrospect we can look back and understand why certain things were going on, but clearly they did not want Africa to be prosperous for its people or to be represented or have anybody there who gave a care for the people or that had any type of issues with robbing them blind because that's really what's been going on once they installed all these strong men. People can say this and they can say that but all Christian nations have given rights to every single person in the modern times and they were a Christian Nation, the Bores(*spelling)of South Africa and the English were very Christian in that area and are still that way by world standards, and besides what people think, there was a lot of love between both peoples. Yes I'm sure there was some animosities but they were on the way to getting figured out that's just the reality of the situation on the ground there. The people who brought in the strongman through communism greatly set back the whole of Africa. And it matters because TRUTH matters, if we continue a lie knowing it's a lie we are complicit in...we'll say the eyes of the universe. Basically we would be guilty of obfuscation of facts, and even in the Bible it talks about that, and that it is the same as a lie, so whatever your beliefs are, my point is it's generally not good for the person obfuscating. It's morally wrong. So the truth needs to be told finally, because a lot of people got killed and suffered and are still dying and suffering over there of all colors. Probably the biggest thing the people there are bereft of is knowledge, shoot we're pretty bereft of that here too. It's not possible to fight an enemy that you don't know exists. It is important that we always seek knowledge consciously because in the end a lack of knowledge is slavery, actual slavery, physical slavery and mental, these are things that were understood by all in previous generations and they have recently been able to rob us of even this knowledge. Facts matter, truth matters, the only people who don't want you to know the truth are people who would benefit by you not knowing it and clearly we can all see there's probably a hell of a lot of that going on right now, combined that with a lack of morals, family and God and you have a pressure cooker.
