I wasn't even born when Rhodesia was a county. I have read, watched interviews, etc I don't think kindness has much to do with selection. My experience in the US Army leads me to believe that service in the selous scouts or sas is because you possess tenacity, endurance, strength and dedication. Dedication above all. That is earned. I think the number I saw was 12% pass rate. That's incredible. Rhodesia isn't forgotten. My respect to to anyone who fought for Rhodesia. God bless you all

When the U.S. marines came up with the idea for the U.S. marine combat hunter program during the iraq War, they brought experts from any and every field that had anything to do with reading body language, how to pick up on pre attack indicators, and how to find someone who is trying not to be found. And for this they brought in former rhodesian combat trackers "for no other reason than they're the hands down best and most effective trackers in a time of war that there's ever been throughout history". Just incase anybody was wondering about why people in the know always rave about the rhodesian combat trackers tracking skills.

@Ingungumbane Lol. I have huge respect for both, and would add that many Selous Scouts (and other special service units) transferred to SA units after the Rhodesian bush war. I disagree that you could say that one was better than the other by any metric other than success/kill rate. If indeed that was the criteria of measurement, the Selous Scouts would be unsurpassed. Be sure to watch the interviews in the KZbin channel called "Fighting men of Rhodesia".

@Ingungumbane Well, that's a matter of opinion, as is mine. I take nothing from the SA military. Indeed like the Rhodesians, they punched way above their pay grade. The Cubans in Angola would attest to that with the snot squirt that they got. We were speaking about the Selous Scouts and counter insurgency though, that was the comment to which I made my comment. Indeed, SA benefited hugely from the experiences and training by the Selous Scouts in S.W.A. SA under PW did much for Rhodesia, but Vorster betrayed Rhodesia. All water under the bridge a long time ago now.

@Ingungumbane We are on the same page then. Indeed if you looked at a cross section of surnames of settlers that came to Rhodesia, a good percentage would be Afrikaans. I do think though that the number of Brit descents probably outnumbered the Afrikaner by at least 2:1 in Rhodesia.

@Ingungumbane I believe that many Rhodesians got British passports if either of their parents or their grand parents were born in Britain. That said, I have zero respect for what Britain did to Rhodesia, especially Harold Wilson (the paw-paw) who stabbed Rhodesia in the back. Years later, John Vorster did the same. The whites living in Zambezia prior to 1890 were very few in number, probably substantially less than 100. Perhaps you are thinking of Goshen or Stellaland, both were independent Afrikaner claimed "countries" in southern Botswana in the mid to late 1800's. Kimberley was the starting point of the Pioneer column of 1890, I have a full list of those in the column somewhere, the vast majority of those men were British, or of British lineage.

It’s nice to hear the stories from a different generation, different service, and a from a very different world perspective than we have today. Other channels all seemingly have the same guests. Found the OG Veterans’ switch on your channel’s typical Gaming-Spectator content to be extremely refreshing. One would think a lot of these old African 🇳🇬 fighters emigrated to; New Zealand, South Africa & Australia after the wars which defined them, was shocked for you lot to find him in the States & even convince him to want to talk to you about it.
