Siachen is the highest battlefield in the world, more than 6000 metres above the sea level and a difficult snow-covered terrain where temperatures go below minus 30 degrees.This was a strategically important mission to capture Bilafond La, Gyong La, Indira Col and Sia La in the Saltoro Ridge. In August 1984, India also captured Gyong La and thus regained control over entire Siachen.

Why is it strategically important? Siachen is the largest single source of fresh water on the Indian subcontinent. It is where the Nubra River originates that eventually meets the Indus river - the major water source that irrigates the Punjab plains in Pakistan.[1] Gaining control over it can result into barring this water to that helps in irrigation It could be an entry point in Kashmir, for both Chinese and Pakistani troops, even though it is very difficult due to weather conditions of extreme temperature ranging from -18 to -60 degrees. India has facilitated tourism in the area ranging from Leh & Laddakh to Khardungla pass that is around 120 km from Nubra valley.
