I would love a film about Kidney Ridge (also known as Snipe Position): my father's battalion of the Rifle Brigade using 6-pounder anti tank guns defending a small rise in the desert in advance of the Battle of Alamein, where a shrinking number of guns and gunners destroyed a large number of German and Italian tanks, preventing an assault that might have unhinged the plans for El Alamein, and reducing Rommel's available tank forces just before the main attack, perhaps turning the war in North Africa. That they spent the whole day also under fire from their own tanks as those couldn't tell friend from enemy, or which way the 6-pounders were firing and may have not even been told there were friendly forces in front of them. It came down to one gun and a Sergeant Callistan manning the only surviving gun alone, while the only surviving officer drove the only surviving jeep to collect the remaining ammunition from guns that had been knocked out. It reached the point that a burning Italian tank actually drove through the gun line, and the two men had to turn the gun around to destroy it. The officer got the Victoria Cross.

@@thomasmouty1879 Hitler was elected by the Germans, not the Italians. While Mussolini wasn't elected at all, he took power, his blackshirts marched on Rome and in the general fear of a civil war he was nominated prime minister. Position that he used to get rid of the rest of the parties. You are the only one playing the blame game, considering how much you try to twist history to fill a bias. The Italians weren't fascist, few of them actually were, it was just another government that was in power and that what was the majority of the population (ie poor farmers) didn't know what it did nor what were its policies. Italy allied with Germany only in 1938, after a lot of reluctance from Mussolini and with discontent in many high ranking fascist and the general population. Germany wasn't a liked ally, much less during the war. "Invaded few countries (and failed)", with the exception of Greece and Egypt (that actually was protected by the British) what countries Italy failed to invade? I'll wait. "When the war started to be lost" actually it was only when the Allies where on the doorsteps of the Italian mainland that the new Italian government decided that complete destruction was not worth it, so in september 1943 they SURRENDERED with ghe Armistice of Cassibile that mind you and every other ignorant that gets it wrong, was just a surrender that didn't put the Italians in the Allied camp, and to be right Italy never became a member of the Allies. I just find just ignant that you judge others countries history with such little knowledge, and then blame everything on "pOlItIcAl cOrReCtNeSs"

I had high expectations for this film when it was announced, hoping that the constraints imposed by it’s factually documented premise might just spare it from being undermined by the near-mandatory ‘modern concessions’ that ruin so much of cinema these days. Judging by the trailer at least my hopes might just have been realised! Looking forward to watching this one in the cinema….I say that so rarely these days. :(

@@stevenclark9987 Sadly we won’t escape completely unscathed though Steve as the trailer does hint at some rather speculative ‘artistic’ embellishment with one of the secretaries seemingly _demanding_ a pseudo partnership (from her _superior_ officer no less, as you do!) with him to bring ‘Mincemeat to fruition! ;) Hardly a deal breaker in itself though - especially as my interpretation of the scene may well prove incorrect. Still, I’m fully expecting the secretarial contribution of the operation to be artificially ‘beefed up’ in order to appease modern, ideologically-compromised critics. ;)
@makara803 жыл бұрын
@@stevenclark9987 Indeed, and on a related note if you want a real laugh over how farcical this sort of thing can be check out the 2018 film Hurricane (I _think_ it’s that film, not 100% sure admittedly). If it is that film then it features a wonderful scene in which a lowly member of the women’s auxiliary service audaciously _dictates air combat tactics/strategies_ (!) to a senior RAF officer! …Coming to cinemas in 2022: Chindit Queen! _Based_ on a true story (which means it can still be utter fiction yet still be presented as moderately true) ‘Queen tells of Roz, a humble nurse with a trendy buzzcut who encounters _Orde Wingate_ in India one day and tells him all about her advanced theories on jungle warfare! The chronically inept Wingate is awed by her far superior genius and, suitably inspired, he forms the legendary Chindits with which to strike effectively behind Japanese lines just as she told him to… ….urgh, I can almost envisage such a film being made in this day and age. :(

Ian Fleming did actually work in Naval Intelligence during the war and was, at the time of Operation Mincemeat, the personal assistant of the head of NID (Naval Intelligence Division), Rear Admiral John Godfrey (played here by Jason Isaacs), who wrote the memo which inspired the operation, and whom it is said also inspired the personality of M in Fleming's Bond books. Fleming didn't actually start writing the Bond books till after the war, but he drew massively on his experiences during it, so him writing stories he never actually published during the war actually makes a lot of sense.

There were many pranks in WW2. For example, the British and Norwegians conspired to lace Nazi U-boat crews' supplies of tinned sardines with croton oil, a very powerful laxative with "explosive" consequences. The submarines had to come close to the surface before the toilets would flush, where they could then be spotted by planes. One U-boat even sank because of an incorrectly flushed toilet
