I remember that episode of That's Life, back in the1988. I remember crying when everyone around him stood up to show they'd been on the kindertransport he'd arranged. It was an incredible thing he did, & he hid it for almost 50 years, not even telling his family what he'd achieved. He was such a humble man. He saved 669 children, on 8 trains. It would have been more but the last train was scheduled to leave on 1 September 1939 & Germany invaded Poland on that day. Of the 250 kids on the last, cancelled train, only 2 survived the war, the Nazis killed the rest. Winton beat himself up every day for that failure. When you look at the later careers of those he saved, some did incredible work benefitting humanity, such as Renata Laxova (paediatric geneticist, discoverer of Neu-Laxová syndrome, who was only 7-8 when she took part in the kindertransport, & fled Czechoslovakia for the 2nd time in 1968 when the USSR invaded, & again escaped to the UK), Leslie Baruch Brent(immunologist & co-discoverer of acquired immunological tolerance) & Joe Schlesinger (award-winning journalist & author). Winton was initially a conscientious objector at the start of WW2, instead volunteering for the Red Cross. A year later, he joined the RAF as an aircraft man but rose through the ranks. After the war, he worked for the International Refugee Organization & later the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Even in his family life he was an exceptional man. The youngest of his 3 children, Robert, had Down Syndrome. At the time, kids with DS were put in children's homes & basically abandoned by their families who assumed the residential home would be better for them than continuing in the family home. We now know this is not true, but at the time it was considered best practice. Winton & his wife questioned this, arguing that their son would have a better life with his siblings & parents, so they kept Robert with them. They were devastated when he caught meningitis & died when he was 6. Winton's response was to found a local branch of a UK charity for people with learning disabilities, Mencap. He received a number of awards throughout his life, especially when his work with the kindertransport became public knowledge. In chronological order: 1983 - he was made MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for setting up a group of homes for the elderly; 1998 - he was awarded the Order of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, Fourth Class, by the Czech President Václav Havel; 2003 - he was knighted (Knight Bachelor) for services to humanity in the UK for his work with the kindertransport; 2003 - he received the Pride of Britain Award for Lifetime Achievement; 2008 - the Czech government named a school in Kunžak after him & he was awarded the Cross Merit of the Minister of Defence, Grade 1. They also nominated him for the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize. Czech astronomers Jana Tichá & Miloš Tichý named a minor planet after him, 19384 Winton; 2009 - a statue of him was unveiled on Platform 1 of the Praha hlavní nádraží railway station, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the last Kindertransport train; 2010 - he was named a British Hero of the Holocaust by the British Government; 2010 - a statue of Winton sitting reading a book was unveiled at Maidenhead railway station (the town he lived in). There were already memorials of him at London's Liverpool Street Station, where the kindertransport children had arrived in the UK; 2013 - he received the Wallenberg Medal from the University of Michigan (named after Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who had studied architecture in Michigan, & rescued tens of thousands of Jews in Budapest during the closing months of WW2, before disappearing in 1945 after being detained by agents of the secret service of the USSR on suspicion of espionage. In 1947, Soviet authorities reported Wallenberg had died of a suspected myocardial infarction on 17 July 1947 while imprisoned in the Lubyanka prison); 2014 - the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation set up a literary competition in Winton's name. The contest is for essays by high school students about Winton's legacy; 2014 - he was awarded the Order of the White Lion (Class I) by Czech President Miloš Zeman. The Czech Defence Ministry sent a special plane to fly him to Prague. He also met some of the children he'd rescued. He was 105 years old, with the children themselves being in their 80s; 2015 - Winton was awarded the Freedom of the City of London; 2019 - his old school, Stowe, opened a new boys' day house, named Winton. Winton was not a religious man, he'd lost at his religion during WW2, saying he couldn't reconcile religious people "praying for victory on both sides of the same war". He also said "I believe in ethics, & if everybody believed in ethics we'd have no problems at all. That's the only way out; forget the religious side." Winton died peacefully in his sleep, aged 106, with his family around him, on the 76th anniversary of one of his train's departures. His motto in life was not to wait for others to do something but be the one to make the difference personally. Strong words from an honourable, decent man who certainly made a difference.

I remember that "that's life" episode and I remember thinking what a wonderful,brave and humble man,in the dictionary,under the word hero, should be this gentlemans name,that generation of men and women are unfortunately something we shall never have again,my great uncle volunteerd for the 2nd world war,as did his brother,most of the young men on his street, many lying about their age, women volunteering for duties helping the war effort.i myself43 now,served in the army for 10 years, however,I'm afraid to say that,I believe if a third world war was to occur,the polar opposite would occur, career office would be empty,men lying to get exempt rather than get accepted and it makes me sad-LEST WE FORFET!

This is a testament to what one man, one life can do. I am the son of one of the children Nicky Winton saved. There are many more alive today around the world and this film is a stark reminder of how we choose to life impacts the lives of others. I was crying at the end because what this man had done and the burden he carried because he couldn't save more of those children. People often ask why I sometimes bristle when all or most veterans (including myself...) are called "heroes" by those that did not serve. The reason I bristle is because to do so for all veterans (or all first responders, or all anything-elsers...) diminishes the value of the title: hero. Heroes go above and beyond any reasonable expectations to help others, often at great risk to themselves, and for no personal gain, other than the knowledge that it is the 'right' thing to do. THIS MAN is a hero.

I think a lot of people saw the original tv show in which the reunion takes place on Instagram and/or TikTok and I think It's great they decided to make a movie about Nicholas Winton and the good that he did for those people. We have to tell stories like this, or "average" good deeds instead of giving media coverage to things like wars.

Up until "lockdown" I worked with one of the survivors she is 10 years older than me. and I remember her getting an invite from St James's Palace to attend a special event. regarding the Kindertransport children, at first she said she didn't want to go and I got the details of the meeting at St James's Palace for her and talked her into attending. She was allowed to take 1 guest with her, and chose her only grandaughter. I watched that meeting on the internetand iy was so heartwarming when after he had walked into a room without lights on and he stood with some of the people in charge when the lights went up and he could see all these people and the person in charge asked if all the Kindertransport children would please stand up and all of the people in the room stood up and that wonderful man was full of tears at how many had survived. My cousins wifes family apart from 3 of them all died in the Camps, along with their Father. They where given up by his German wife to the Gestapo. in exchange for his businesses and money.

I have watched the documentary on this...Nicky's Family...twice. It's on Prime video. Just so incredibly moving! The sacrifice of everyone involved. The parents who said goodbye to their children, the children themselves and the families taking care of them and of course Sir Nicholas and his entire operation. He was a very interesting man-very unique personality. When I think of the "right person at the right time" in history...this sure suits the occasion. The documentary shows the video of him sitting, unaware, of some of the children, now adults, that he saved....it was a profoundly moving experience...tears, of course, but something more than that...just the sheer audacity of him to do what he did and to be sitting next to the lives of all that he saved-power of love, resilience, perseverance, faith, hope...incredible. I think it should be made available to high schools throughout the US and turned into a theater production such as Anne Frank's...this story must be told-forever.

Although Sir Nicholas Winton did an amazing thing & saved the lives of 669 children, he was never in any personal danger, so he is ineligible for that award. I agree that it seems unfair, but Yad Vashem has its rules.

The story was explained by David Suchet, who played clips from the actual TV show, and then introduced Winton's son to the thousands watching live, and the TV audience. It was incredibly moving,

I just watched the film and I have never, ever cried as much. It is the day after the US Election and they have elected a racist bigot with hatred in his heart. When I watched this film I could not believe the vast gulf between between Trump and Winton, one filled with hate and retribution and one filled with love and compassion. One a craven coward and one a hero.

I came across Sir Nicholas' story on KZbin a few years ago. I go back from time to time to watch the clip containing the two episodes where he met the children he saved to remind myself there is good in the world. The moment I saw the photo of Anthony Hopkins with the audience behind him I new he was portraying Sir Nicholas. So pleased more people will learn about this incredible man.

I been knowing this story for a long time and im glad they turned into a movie, he deserve recognition for saving so many Jewish children putting his life at risk and that of his family in order to save so many, and then not to speak about it for years thats the definition of a Good Samaritan, he didnt boast about the great thing he did, may he rest in peace now , and the cast of this movie Antony Hopkins , Jonathan Pryce and helena boham carter a cast of A Llisters to do this movie is a must watch and a top priority on my must watch list

It is not important to have super power to b a hero .... You need a heart to b a hero like sir ... As an Indian I was not aware of this but thanks to social media who shows the world 🌎 that auper hero's are amonge with us with simple life.... Hats off sir and lots of respect❤

I wish there would be same help for the children facing the same situation in many countries around the world at the moment. The wars have not ended, the abuse has not gone down. Every child deserves a new chance at life.

One of the children that Sir Nicholas saved was a six year old boy called Alfred Dubs. Dubs went on to become a Labour politician and is now Baron Dubs and sits in the House of Lords. Since 2016 he has been fighting to enshrine in our laws protections for unaccompanied children who come to the UK as refugees like he did as a child - a response to the European Migrant crisis. Unfortunately the Government is fighting him every step of the way and repealed the Dubs Amendment in 2017 as well as shutting down his several attempts to reinstate it in the years since. I really hope that we'll be able to see his efforts realised soon.

Oskar Schindler's story ("Schindler's List", 1993) is different, but also worth re-telling and re-watching. The man basically did a 180 from being an opportunist and moneymaker to spending his whole fortune and risking his own life to save Jews from death in nazi concentration camps

I saw this movie and I was moved to tears by it. "He who saves one life saves the world entire", like Oskar Schindler. It must have been awful for all the young children having to be evacuated to a place of safety, away from all the bombings in London. Imagine, being a young child and having to spend Christmas Day and your birthday, away from your home and your family during World War Two. So many people say that life is hard today, but imagine having to starve through The Great Depression, and then Adolf Hitler invading Poland and going straight into The Second World War in 1939. They really were bleak times to live through. This is an amazing film.

I think of myself as a good person overall but then I see something like this and I have to admit that Nickolas Winton is about as pure and selfless of a human being as I've ever seen and I don't think I honestly meet his level so major respect to him for that.

I am looking forward to this movie! Of course I've seen many clips and interviews with this great man. He is a true hero, humble, and he was uplifting and coherent in his interviews at age 104. He's one of the best people who ever lived. Glad they made another movie about him.
