Excellent demonstration. My only nitpick would be the bit about the system on the AR. You showed it with the gas tube and it blowing back and then later showed a tube of gas blowing back the drawer slide and I worry that gives the wrong impression to some degree. It sort of implies that the gas blows into the gas key and the buildup of pressure in the gas key causes the bolt carrier to back off from the gas tube and cycle the rifle. What really happens is the gas goes through the gas key into the bolt carrier, which is acting as the cylinder, and the gas pressure pushes the bolt forward from the perspective of the bolt carrier. Since the bolt is unable to move forward because it is against the barrel this causes the bolt carrier to begin to move rearward instead. This movement causes the cam pin to intercept the bolt carrier which forces the bolt to rotate and unlock from the barrel extension. When the bolt has moved far enough forward the gas inside the carrier is vented and the bolt carrier continues to travel rearward compressing the action spring on momentum from the expansion of the gas within the bolt carrier. I get that isn't what the lesson was about and going into it is probably not worth it but still, don't want people thinking the AR is as simple as that and that the gas rings on the bolt do nothing or that the inside of the bolt carrier does not need to be cleaned from time to time of carbon.

Isn't it actually accelerating to the Right.. and decelerating to the left... Opposite of where he points. The spring I mean... 8:55... I figured maybe I could ask you. Since I know he's a busy person.
@onpsxmember
@onpsxmember Жыл бұрын
@@strydyrhellzrydyr1345 It is decelerating the bolt when it is compressed. It is compressed when pushed to the right based on the reactive force from pushing the projectile to the left. After being compressed and stopping, the bolt is accelerated to the left again, picks up another cartridge, closes the action and ready to start again.

@@strydyrhellzrydyr1345 I was just talking about the AR-15. He showed an AR bolt carrier group and the gas tube for it and then showed his demo with a similar gas tube (the air nozzle) and I just wanted to point out to any viewer that may not know that this is not how the AR works even though he showed an AR as an example. I could see how someone could get confused and see the AR bolt carrier group and the gas tube and then see the drawer slide and the gas tube and assume they worked the same way because both examples have gas tubes but they do not, even though they are similar in terms of the example used, so the mass and velocity lesson is still applicable. I am happy to break it all down further and explain any detail you may be stuck on, just give me a hint where to start.

Hi Mark, great job explaining this. Just shows how smart people like John Browning were over 100 years ago in their understanding of physics and all done without the aid of computers. With the latest technology we struggle to come up with anything new, but just refine what's already been done. Just shows that the laws of nature and physics is a constant that doesn't change...

That was the most awesome explanation of operational mass and timing I've heard in years the first time I was 7 or 8 and I was asking my dad what he was doing he explained hes increasing the amount of powder in a 30-06 round but needs to make sure not to over pressurise the gas system of the semi auto M14 rifle because to high a pressure may alter the timing of the bolt mass as opposed to the return buffer and ultimately break the rifle. Haveing an idea what you were saying fromhaveing listened to my dad years ago. Gota say I love when the call come down to get down the rabbit hole.

@@marknovak8255 I think this would be a good topic to discuss in a video, because I've had countless people disagree when I said "all semi auto guns are piston driven". It would really make some people think about it a little more, especially if someone with your pedigree were to discuss it. You are actually the first person that makes videos to actually agree with the statement, unless you were being sarcastic and I missed the sarcasm. All semi auto guns are piston driven, and the piston is just located in different places. Straight blowback uses the cartridge case as a self replacing piston. The AR is an internal piston inside the BCG. The AK is obvious. Roller delayed is essentially the same as straight blowback with the cartridge case as the piston and the rollers "delaying" the opening of the bolt, etc. I'd love to see the responses you get if you were to discuss this topic.

Alas, I am only an engineer (most of us can't spell well!). All great stuff! Very good demonstration. I would avoid the J-S-C-P stuff as it is distracting and very difficult for anyone to understand (time ~6:51). All your audience needs to know (and I think a touch of math helps even for the South Carolina folks....) is (in this example) P = displacement (meters), V = velocity (meters/second) and A = acceleration (meters/second per second). At about 9:54 you mis--spoke. Acceleration has units of meters per second per second or how fast you are increasing (or decreasing if negative) your velocity (meters/second). I hope this helps!
