Professor Paul Christensen is a recognised international expert on lithium-ion battery failure events and an adviser to the UK National Fire Chiefs Council on the topic. Touching on the UK and European experience in their continuing transition to alternate energy sources, and as Australia and New Zealand accelerates their own transition, Paul recognises that fire and emergency services are adapting to a changing operating environment and should be informed of potential risks.
Paul’s research through Newcastle University, particularly around best practice tactics for suppressing lithium-ion battery fires, along with mitigating other hazards such as vapour cloud explosions because of lithium-ion battery thermal events, are of great interest to first responders. Paul will explore case studies from incidents that have occurred across the globe to examine the causation and consequence of tactics.
