My grandpa was the youngest Vietnam Cobra pilot, he was with the 101st Airborne and flew all sorts of missions. He doesn't ever talk about it and still suffers pretty bad anxiety from all that. I got most of my info from my mom, who said he did a whole lot of killing and saw a lot of death so he doesn't want to talk. One story is that he was hovering above a landing zone and dropped something in his cockpit, and bent down to grab it. At that exact instant a bullet whizzed through the canopy and left a big hole where his head used to be. He later flew search and rescue of the coast of California and retired much later after that.

@SebHaarfagre Жыл бұрын
That doesn't make sense. And why is it almost a straight copy of another comment here but with the claim of "having talked to Vietnam vets" instead? Where is the source of this? Just sounds like a lot of baloney because it doesn't make rational sense. Physically. In several ways.

@@SebHaarfagre are u dense? huey gunship has 2 massive open doors to shoot out of. here you are in an enclosed canopy. what part about not hearing small arms doesn't make sense to you? cos it makes a whole lot of sense to me.
@MrLBPug Жыл бұрын
@@SebHaarfagre There were four guys aboard the Huey gunships: a pilot, a co-pilot/gunner and two door gunners. In the Huey gunships, the side doors were often removed. Those latter two crew members were extra eyes and ears for the pilots and provided covering fire after pulling out of a gun or rocket run. The Cobra of course lacked the door gunners and had an enclosed cockpit, which did indeed make for less situational awareness, according to many Cobra pilots. However, it was much faster and carried a far heavier armament than the Huey gunships, which more than made up for those deficiencies. You can read about the (introduction of the) Cobra in 'Vietnam: The Helicopter War' by Philip D. Chinnery, chapter 7, page 86-87 (ISBN 1-85310-827-8).

The WDU-4 warhead used in Vietnam has a fixed 1.6 second time fuze. The post-Vietnam M255 has a fuze that can be set for ranges from 500 to 6900m in 100m increments. WDU-4 has ~2200x 20-grain flechetes, M255 has ~1100 60 grain flechetes. Essentially .22LR and 5.56 NATO weights. The issue of HE fuzes detonating in the canopy was also addressed with the M433, which has multiple delay options to allow it to hit the canopy and detonate below it.

I got bumped from my seat on a mission and ended up in a 58.. my 1st time.... ended up getting 5hrs stick time that day. But what still stands out was the pilot not knowing that I knew how to fly. 58 is easy compared to front seat in AH-1!! My favorite is still the ECAS version.. it wasn't heavily laiden with "extras". AH-1 was absolutely lethal when paired with an OH-6 as a Hunter Killer or "Pink" team (Cobra being the red element and the Loach as the white element.) The scout was low and fast and the Cobra would sit around 10000 feet with the gunner working the UHF/VHF radios and working the maps (everything was a green blur for the scout crew). The Scout would draw fire and the Cobra would roll in with rockets and ruin everyone's day. Read Low Level Hell by Hugh Mills, a particularly aggressive scout pilot in the Big Red One.
