The F-35 and F-22 were designed for different mission sets. The 35 has less internal stores, built in TGP, and it’s very good at CCC. But it’s designed to take out enemy air defenses in stealth and then place external pylons with A2G stores and take out other ground targets. Because of its integrated sensors it’ll make any friendly forces far more lethal so it’ll linger in the air space and start CCC for the area.

Yeah, regarding the balloon, F-22 along with F-15 are the only current US fighters that can reach 60,000 feet. Also I imagine with it's thrust vectoring the Raptor especially comes in handy given how wide the turning radius would be at that altitude, due to the air being so thin at 60k feet, I imagine even normally quite maneuverable aircraft would start to feel like bricks
@spider_corsa Жыл бұрын
also, they didn't know the real purpose of the balloon, it could be a harmless loose meteorology balloon or a tricky attack with unknown devices onboard and stealth became handy against it

Worked on the F-22 for 7 years. This was the Second balloon kill, First A/A Kill, and i was sitting under the wing for the first one. I was working at Hot Pits (refueling on the ground while the aircraft is running) at Langley AFB in 2009, and a Mylar balloon from the BX, started to float over the west ramp. I was under the left wing when I heard my A man call out “uhhh.. we have a balloon coming.” I peeked under the flaps, and sure enough it was about 20-30 feet in the air, floating toward one of the other jets. Pilot calls “surfaces clear” and I tucked in deep under the wing, you didn’t want your head anywhere near a moving flap and/or horizontal stab. “Clear.” I called while I’m kneeling and keeping myself grounded on refueling attachment. He tilted the stick back and pointed the thrust up at the balloon, which went immediately from a limp, crumply thing to a taut ball, apparently the jet exhaust made it expand fully and leak more air, because this time it floated a good 150 feet into the air, and landed in the grass next to the runway, where our Hot Pit Super picked it up. We all joked and called it a ground to air kill on a balloon, but when it comes down to it, we saved aircraft from a lot of time consuming and expensive maintenance.

My boss is a former air force pilot, he confirmed the reason they used the F-22 is because it is the only fighter in the US inventory capable of flying combat maneuvers at the altitude that balloon was at. Cool fact, they couldn't use radar or infrared seekers to track the balloon since it gave off no heat and was invisible to radar, so the pilot had to manually aim his sidewinder via the bore sight with the seeker head turned off to hit the balloon, basically like an unguided rocket. That fighter squadron already has patches made up with a popped balloon and Winnie the Pooh on it with the words Float Around and Find Out around the perimeter.

For reference, the Su-57 has an RCS of 1m². The J-20 is 0.1m². The F-117 is 0.001m². The F-22 has a smaller RCS than the F-117, reported by LockMart as being 0.0001m² from certain angles. @SymeonPhronema Жыл бұрын
Highly unlikely it was breaking the sound barrier over your house. USAF jets aren't allowed to do that as it can cause damage to windows, etc. Chances are it was just loud as the F-22 and F-35 are extremely loud. Edit: The only times they are allowed to break the sound barrier over land would be in an emergency situation, and when they have very specific authorization from a higher ranking officer to do so. Also, when training over water they're allowed to do it, and no authorization is required over water.

@@SymeonPhronema I agree they weren't likely intending to hit mach, but it was 2000 and some hotshot pilots were probably willing to get closer to that line than they ought to. Good Vid. I need to correct you the mod has the Thrust Vectoring moddeled you just need to go the FCS page and press OVERRIDE
@sentinel8185 Жыл бұрын
No, theirs a separate version of the F-22 for thrust vectoring. The mod developers haven’t released it to the public yet.
@Raptic556 Жыл бұрын
@@sentinel8185 they have. I have the same mod downloaded like him and can use the Thrust Vectoring :)

@@Raptic556 Dude… no it’s not, that’s not thrust vectoring. That’s an override to AOA limit… like your aileron and elevator control surfaces which is separate from thrust vectoring. FCS has been in the F-22 mod for a couple of years, and the developers state that they haven’t released the thrust vectoring version to the PUBLIC.

Technically, there's an f22 flight sim from the late 90s for pc. It's super old tho. Same company made a sim for Abrams and Comanche

The radar cross-section of a F-22 is the same as a sparrow (the bird).

By the way the radar cross section of the f22 head on is 0.0001 m^2 which is about the radar cross section of a freaking bee
