In my sixty-plus years of going to the Met, Leonie Rysanek remains the greatest singer-actor. As this compendium reveals, she was supreme in a host of different styles and always gave everything to music, to her parts and to her public. Special thanks for revealing what a great Marschallin she was. My memory placed Schwartzkopf and Crespin ahead of her, but though they were more aristocratically grand, she was pure woman going through a challenging time without self-conscious tristesse. Brava to her interpretive genius, and bless her forever!

Had a mistaken memory - of first time I heard her live - I totally forgot that I heard her in Die Frau in the Met Production from 68/69. Later I heard her as Elisabeth in Tannhaeuser when the Met was on tour in Boston c. 1978/79. I adored her. Now I can hear I was correct that she was so fabulous. Singing doesn't get any better than this. WOW!

Her Marschallin is simply terrible

Zamboni: Her Marschallin is SIMPLY TERRIFIC. She expressed a more human side of the character and revealed the young girl sold by her father for social gain and status as she believes Is happening to Sophie. Per composer John Kander, in an Opera News profile, she never took her eyes off of Octavian when they were on stage together and presented as I always thought that this was the great last love of her life whereas her future would be just ‘slam bang thank you man’ lovers of the future. She was a great singer actress of the opera world. Stick to what your name implies: smooth ice at sports arenas!! “Ja, ja”

You obviously do not understand the character she was portraying. Such a stupid, dismissive comment from the ill-informed.
