Soo many butt hurt Opeth fan boys. I love Opeth but Its a decent song at best, compared to the below average prog rock stuff they have been puting out for the last decade. Its nothing to drool about and definitely not as good as older stuff. I can understand the excitement of hearing growls again but come on... Everyone is entitled their own opinion.

This whole "everyone is entitled to their own opinion" shit is so annoying to me, because firstly, just because it's your opinion it doesn't mean it isn't something completely stupid being said; but most important: if you post your opinions online, and insult something people is passionate about, of course fans are going to let you know. If you can't handle that, don't make your opinions available like that.

I've followed this channel for a long time and I absolutely love the honesty, but respectfully, that was an out there take. To say a fan base is putting up a front because you can't find anything to enjoy about the song is wild. I could say the same thing about a bunch of the nerdy power metal bands in the world but I don't because while it very much is not for me I fully acknowledge that people have different tastes than I do. My take? Decent song and I'm excited for what the album is going to be. It's not Still Life-Ghost Reveries era Opeth, but I loved In Cauda and this sounds like a continuation of that era with more heaviness interjected. Fantastic drumming, as always.

Very closed minded opinion your boy just gave on this song. It's complex, elegant, perhaps too sophisticated for your boy. It reminds me of when I was in high school listening to Korn and thinking Symphony X sucked!! I SUCKED for having a small brain from listening to bands like Korn. When I began listening to more complex, meaningful, prog, technical metal, I look back and laugh that I didn't think Symphony X was amazing.

Interesting to hear a less than enthusiastic review of the song. I personally love it. Would actually place it in my current list of favorite Opeth songs (perhaps mediated by the novelty of the song). Fans often divide Opeth's eras into at least two: With the growls and without. Of these two eras my fav albums are Watershed and In Cauda Venenum respectively. Watershed had a certain 'weirdness' (sorry, don't know how else to say it) to the songs that I really enjoyed while they still packed a punch. The riffs were different and the song had plenty surprises (eg The Lotus Eater). In Cauda Venenum really leaned into what I would describe as 'theatricality' and I feel that works really well for this band. And this song sounds like a mix between the two albums. It's almost uncanny how much I recognize of both albums. The clean elements of this album would easily fit on In Cauda Venenum, while the heavier parts would not sound strange on Watershed at all. In this particular song I really enjoy the uneasy theatricality of it all, especially the clean vocals. It's most clear in the "Draped in death the howl of lore" line, very strongly helped by the vibrato in Michael's voice, which almost gives it a ghost like quality. The parts with the growls also come in very strongly and punchy with how the drums and guitars quickly lead in the transition. I've always really appreciated Michael as a vocalist (imo he is one of the best) and in this song I feel like he puts on one of his best performances. Instrumentally, I feel like the drums and guitar at the forefront are quick and energetic. But for large parts of the song there is also slow instrumentation going on which sets a darker mood. It's a very interesting combination for me. The part that best demonstrates this is the "put your trust..." part, where one of the guitars takes on the slow and long tone that almost sounds like a drawn out siren. Meanwhile the guitar and drums at the front are playing a much more energetic piece in a weird pattern that packs a lot of punch. Quite excited for the new album now.

Thank you for being honest in your reactions. Appreciate that! Newpeth combines the jazzy, psychedelic prog-rock era with their older sound. I kind of like it. Especially with harsher vocals again (first time after 16 years I believe). This song, at least for me, has to be heard more than one time to be appreciated. This happens to be the case for most of their newer stuff imo. But I like the eerie kind of vibe tho. Interested in hearing more of it.

Opeth fan here, It's interesting when Antonio said that if there wasn't the "Opeth name" associated with the song i wouldn't listen to it. Like i do feel the same. My joy from this song comes more from the fact that, at first listen (before the rest of the album is out), it serves as the intro to the story this album is going to tell. It's basically the intro song, it's what plays when the curtain rises, that sets the tone for what to come, and that does make me excited. Looking forward to hearing the rest of the album and seeing how this song plays into it all! So rounding back, It's not my favorite song by a long shot, but the "Opeth name" does give it interest, for reason and effect.

The fact that people are losing their marbles over the harsh vocals speaks to his point. If this was not Opeth who would care about the vocals. You cannot separate the art from the artist, and for fans of the artist the art is viewed always under a different light.
