Mikael explained in a magazine recently that he wanted to use growls again in a time when people stopped caring… and apparently that time was now He also pointed out that Martin Mendez gave Mikael the idea to do something heavy again on this new album And Mikael said ok let’s try it They were also doing some anniversary shows and Mikael said his death metal voice was good And I guess the concept of the album went well with a heavier approach to songwriting So that’s the reason he decided to do growls again

It's a concept album - it's following a story, and according to promo reviews Michael uses different voices/singing techniques for different characters (like the operatics, the deeper dark voice, the raspy "female" whispering etc.). This song (Section 1) seems to fit most of the characters if I understand it correctly. With that said, some songs will be growl-heavy while others might have now growling at all, while others, l assume, will be a mix.

I cried after hearing this. I had fully embraced their new direction from the beginning because I had a full catalogue of death metal Opeth already, they'd given enough. And I really genuinely do enjoy their newer albums as well. But I never, EVER expected this. It feels like a love letter to all of us OG fans and it touched me to my soul. If the rest of the album slaps as hard as this track did, I might die.

All you need to do is look at the artwork and you can tell they're back. It's almost like this followed directly after Watershed.
@jimanaz3318

The music is still more proggy and jazz fusiony than death though. It's darker, yes, and he growls, but he also sings in a darker deeper voice we've never heard before, and then there's the operatic voice. It's much more cinematic than atmospheric, so although Michael's growling again, I'd not call this a return to Oldpeth. This is POSTPETH - it's post old and new Opeth.
@huzidamasta
@huzidamasta Ай бұрын
@jimanaz3318 that's fair, but Watershed was the start of the progginess and mikael did vocal styles he'd never done before. Put it this way, if Opeth had stopped after Watershed, and then suddenly released this in 2024, it wouldn't surprise me. You don't actually need the in-between albums for it to make sense as a progression.

Just a twisty,groovy.....almost jazz metal sounding track. This was so different from a lot of the stuff you hear. Especially the beginning was very different in the best ways. Great vocals and guitar. The vocalist has such a unique sound, and this band always delivers. It's crazy what certain music can do to us emotionally. The streamer Tank the Tech did a reaction to the Gojira Olympic opening ceremonies song that you also reviewed Tommy, and he broke down in tears after hearing it because I feel like many of us Metalheads have been such a minority for decades and have been told the music we love is just a niche market. We have been pushed to the shadows because of the music we love and to see them perform with hundreds of millions of people watching just hit him emotionally. Which I totally get and understand. Metal is back baby and we will be heard!!!

First off, I think your expression is what most of us looked like once we heard Mike growl for the first time in 16 years. 😲🥹 You and I have very similar paths to finding Opeth. Metallica was my favorite. Then one day a friend said I should check out this band. So, I put Blackwater park in my CD player, heard the growls and instantly thought, "Oh, no, not one of these bands" 😅 But something about the chord progression that was fresh and provocative. 5 mins into the song it slows to this beautiful acoustic part and It was mystifying. Then Mike began to sing... I couldn't believe it. 😶 Never had I heard music like that. Opeth moves me to great emotional extremes, that's how powerful the music is. I, we, are all like you, Sir. Stay strong. Cheers

It's awesome to see how music can affect people and evoke memories, with pinpoint accuracy of where and when you first heard a band or certain track. I felt your joy, and knowing that they're such an important and favourite band of yours made the reaction. As you know, I'm only recently discovering Opeth because of your channel, and I'm excited to hear more new tracks from this album! A little googling was done regarding the § character (section sign). It's used in referencing individually numbered sections on documents. Kind of makes sense with the album title, and I guess all tracks will be numbered this way.. 🤔

You're not a baby, and you're not cringe for sharing your feelings. The strongest men are ones who are not afraid to do so, so be proud that you can. I hope whatever it is you are going through can sort itself out and you feel happier about life some time soon. It took me a while to get into Opeth. I found it tough at first, but the video game Sleeping Dogs had The Devil's Orchard and The Grand Conjuration on its soundtrack, and I loved them both. From that, I bought up their whole discography very quickly. They are an incredible band, and to hear those growls again after so long was just...goosebumps. My favourite band are Fleshgod Apocalypse, with Alcest, Opeth and Gaerea right behind. This is the first video of yours I've seen, but your reactions and emotions were so genuine that it made it so likeable. Again don't be afraid to show your emotions. We are people and that is what we should do. Society would be better for it if there was not prejudice for doing so.

It's like everything that Opeth has been about for the past 30 years in one song, then it's going a step further. Like you, Opeth is one of my favorite bands, and was one of the bands that got me into heavier music.

Yeah, when this dropped I was at my work, once the song ended, I went straight to the bathroom so I could clean my face... I never expected Opeth to drop this bomb, they are my favorite band for over 12 years, and I never though I would hear something like this again.

I don’t think that you’re a baby because you show emotions and share with us strangers what moves you. Thank you very, very much for that. Funny thing: I have a similar story and history with Opeth. Big Metallica fan and then… along comes a friend and shows me Still Life. Might have been 17 as well. My only “negative” feeling is that I’m afraid that this might be their Goodbye because of the testament thing. Ending with a last gift to us. Good thing I stumbled upon your video. ❤

There's a segment that has a hint of David Bowie in it. I listened to this 6 times straight the Saturday night at work as I heard it on KISW's metal shop on the way into work. Looking forward to the album.

You know very well how I feel about growls. 99% of the times I don’t like it, sometimes I hate it. But there those few bands and artists that just do it right, where I can’t but love it. Tati from Jinjer is one of them, and Mikael of course. For me there’s no male growl vocalists that gets even close. As soon as the track started I felt it coming, and we were not disappointed. They’re back, finally.

I understand what you're getting at completely. Music brings me back to moments - I'll never hear Windowpane without thinking about a trip to Maine with my then-girlfriend in '03. Megadeth's Cryptic Writings on the way to my junior prom in '97 (My local record store gave me their promo copy, and yes, I'm old. lol). David Gilmour's On An Island when I was living in Boston in '05, broke and miserable, but so happy to hear his voice again. As Jimmy Gnecco from Ours says in their song Get Up: "These are the things that you want to remember." I do, and I will.

It's neither Oldpeth or Newpeth... Is it Nowpeth, Neopeth? Or is it going to be Postpeth - Post-Opeth? The promo reviews are pointing towards that - it's apparently NOT a mix of old and new Opeth. Sure it has some growling in it, but it's definitely more on the prog side than death, but more cinematic and dark than new Opeth. But then apparently there are a bunch of "happy-sounding" tunes and segments on the album, especially later on on the album. The growls are apparently there for a reason as the album is a concept album and a story with different characters, where I guess the growling voice might be one of the characters, just like the operatic voice and Michael singing with a deeper clean voice might be characters as well. Exciting stuff!
