Would put Deliverance in B, maybe A. Ghost Reveries is S tier, maybe the top with Still Life. Watershed is B. Heritage is F tier. Pale Communion is A tier. And not to be too fanboi ish, the new one is S tier, for a lot of reasons. It's not just a revival of the old stuff, it's a progression from it, and an engaging one at that. It's very cinematic. I think this would please movie buffs with how it's structured and layered instrumentally. An entirely new dimension of Opeth's music.

I lost a little bit of interest after Watershed. I still saw them live a few times since Watershed to hear their best stuff live. I wish I saw them live on their Ghost Reveries tour before Martin Lopez and Peter Lindgren left. From 'My Arms, Your Hearse' to 'Ghost Reveries' is peak Opeth for me. Best songs and best lineup.

@@ThatMetalBloke I finished listening to the new album for the first time a few hours ago. It's definitely their best album since Watershed. It's not quite on the same level as their best stuff but the new album feels like it's a mixture of everything that they've done before. It's more focused than their last few albums and sounds great. I'll definitely have to listen to it a few more times at least. I'd put it on the lower part of A tier. They're touring in my country late next year. At this stage, I'm not sure if this album is great enough to sway me to see them live again. Also, ticket prices have significantly increased since I saw them last time so I'm unable to go and see as many bands live as I used to.

Ghost Reveries is up there with BWP for my favourite album, honestly. I also used to think it was underrated until I joined Metalstorm, and it's the second highest rated album on there. Reverie/Harlequin Forest is simply gorgeous. There's a live performance of that song on KZbin, and it's just magical. Check it out if you haven't already. WTF is with people rating Morningrise so low lately? Haha everyone used to rave about that album. I'm going to need to Relisten to see if I've got Nostalgia goggles on. I was genuinely gonna cry when you were going to put Sorceress in front of Morningrise. Watershed is another album I've seen that received a lot of shit recently. I assumed this was the last album everyone loved, but I guess not. Angry Metal Guy has a lot of disdain for this thing. It wouldn't be anywhere near S tier for my list, but I still love it. I absolutely love the new album. Very easily the best album since Watershed, and I think I like it more. It's a 9/10 for me, I think. I never expected to hear Opeth like this again. It could even potentially break my top 5 after a few more listens.

Still life has become my favorite with my arms and blackwater not far behind. Kinda depends on the day really. But deliverance and ghost reveries are like 9.8/10 as compared to the previously mentioned 10/10’s. Their pure prog/rock/no more death metal phase doesn’t do it for me. Excited to check out the new album. It can be so insufferable reading reviews for literally any opeth album. One review for the new album had the writer basically speaking as if he was best buds with Mike being like “he doesn’t need to do anything he doesn’t want to do, so for all of those poser opeth fans who hopped up after the growls disappeared, here’s your chance to come crawling back”. lol for me I was bummed because I was obsessed with BWP, Deliverance, and Ghost Reveries. I felt the prog route they went sounded pretentious and just not as good as other prog brands I enjoy (the joys of music being subjective) and I also like wasn’t really a fan of Mikes interviews basically verbally assaulting interviewers who simply asked why the switch happened; and before everyone comes flying in with the hate, yes, they’re their own band and they can do whatever the hell they want (as Mike and the band have made ABUNDANTLY clear in numerous interviews). I’ve felt they’ve always impacted me and sounded their best with the growls and not leaning too much into the “traditional” prog sound

My useless opinion: S: Ghost Reveries - Still Life A: Watershed - Pale Communion - Blackwater Park B: My Arms Your Hearse - Damnation - Orchid C: Sorceress - Deliverence - Heritage - Morningrise D: In Cauda Venenum Ghost Reveries might be the best album of all time actually. It’s unbelievable. I’d go as far as to say alot of modern bands (like Mastodon) have been HEAVILY influenced by it. Pale Communion is definitely their highest quality, most creative and complete (least amount of filler) Newpeth album. Goblin is pure brutality and I don’t care what anyone says. My Arm’s Your Hearse is a killer and comlex Opeth album that teases alot of what was to come later in their career, but the production is just a bit fatiguing on the ears. Deliverance is super compressed and ear fatiguing, and it’s guitar riffage is kinda phoned in and soulless compared to what came before and after. Sitting through the first half of the title track to get to the famous outro always feels like a chore. Bizarrely lower quality and overrated album, Damnation is far superior. If Sorceress didn’t have so much bland filler and also less muddy production value, I’d rank it a tier higher, but it’s really just 2 or 3 admittedly fantastic songs that only sound good live. In Cauda Venenum sounds like Foo Fighters attempting progressive metal. It’s practically pop rock. It was a step too far and I think they know it (which explains the course correction on the new album).

I couldn't disagree more. The story is amazing and the scenes that play out as a result of the music is cinematic in my opinion.

@ too eclectic for me. It’s like they just threw a bunch of ideas against the wall to see what would stick. It’s a frustrating mess

Up there with the Aciients album for one of the albums of the year. If you haven't heard it, thoroughly recommend the latest by the Anciients .
