Mikael said that he doesn't want to growl because he doesn't enjoy that music anymore. If he went back to death metal, it won't be genuine, which is what made Opeth so special. He said himself that he doesn't care if everyone hates his music; he'll continue to make what he wants as long as it feels true to him. That, I feel, is much more precious than him going back to growls.

Necrotic Nick- I get it and I honestly like his honesty about it because I would rather him make the music he's passionate about than simply pandering. I do miss it though. Opeth were that perfect balance of the "beauty and the beast" dynamic especially considering how awesome his growl was.

He was already tired of death metal during the recording of Blackwater Park. But he seems to enjoy growling again since in the last 2 years he really improved his technique and finally showed some good growls. Damn there is a literal growl in Dignity from ICV, thats nice.

Probably should’ve just started a completely different band instead of doing a total 180 on the current one. Just my opinion. It’s his band.

@@dustin6528 Opeth is his life to be fair, he joined when he was 16 and stayed with it throughout all the lineup changes, I think it's fair enough. I wouldn't call it a complete 180 either, the growls were just one aspect of the music even in the older albums where he did growl a lot of fan favourite songs and parts of songs were the more progressive parts with clean vocals - Opeth is Opeth and remained Opeth after Ghost Reveries, just dropped an aspect of the music they weren't particularly fucking with at the time

@@squeezy8414 i agree. 50% of blackwater park is basically what theyre doing now, tracks like harvest are completely prog rock, coil, burden. that middle period of opeth where they arguably did their best work, half the music is straight up prog rock like they make now.

Not my #1 but it's in my top 3! It is also definitely a concept album, which I wish they would have mentioned. Incredible lyrics on this one that dove me waaaaay deeper into the songs. Benighted may be my favorite acoustic Opeth track as well but that's a tough choice with so many options. Maybe the most striking artwork of any Opeth release too!

I was essentially with your opinion on Heritage until just a few years ago...then I kept listening over and over and over until finally it hit. I was surprised at just how much I fell in love with this album. The sound is killer courtesy of SW's mixing, and the overall vibe and atmosphere is creepy and dark like the best of the older classic stuff. Don't give up, this album can sneak up on you in a big way.

There are times when I have listened to death metal and black metal of all varieties for so many consecutive days, I feel like I need a break... but I just can't fully give it up. Opeth ,with the exception of a few albums that lack that variety, are the perfect band to listen to during those times for me. Great video!

It’s really cool to see how different everybody’s lists are, it shows how really special this band is. As you say, it’s hard and it takes time to put a definitive list together and it may change at any point but, for now, mine goes: 1.- Blackwater Park 2.- Deliverance 3.- Ghost Reveries 4.- Damnation 5.- Watershed 6.- Still life 7.- In cauda venenum 8.- My arms your hearse 9.- Pale communion 10.- Morningrise 11.- Sorceress 12.- Orchid 13.- Heritage Great video guys! Late to the party as ever but really enjoyed this guys! I'm here to give Pale Communion some love tho, I think the problem with it is it feels like a bunch of random songs rather than one rounded piece of music/art. But it's got a great opener in Eternal Rains, River is just an awesome rock track, Faith in Others is one of the best outros on any Opeth record & Moon Above Sun Below is poss my fave ever Opeth track, the ending is just perfection. But we all agree Opeth ROCK!!!

Agree. Watershed is PERFECTLY developed. Transitions, groove, rawness and total aggressiveness, melodic. Fights 1st place face to face with In Cauda Venenum, wich I believe is the album they have really got to the culmination of their prog rock era. That last album really feels like they can compose whatever they heck they feel like, and felt free of any musical restrains.

When it comes to Opeth of course I love the heavy elements but I also love the beauty within the melodies of their compositions especially with songs like Bleak and The Moor and Black Rose Immortal which to me is a masterpiece. Also I love all of their albums and speaking of Porcupine Tree I have tried getting into them but they aren't my thing when it comes to prog rock I prefer bands like The Mars Volta; however I understand why people like Porcupine Tree. My favorite Opeth albums are Damnation (the second half of Deliverance), Morningrise, and Blackwater Park which are the ones I think are some of the most unique albums in extreme music and they are brilliant albums in their own way. I also need to listen to rest of their albums all the way through especially Still Life. Opeth is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite bands. Besides Acid Bath and Church Of Misery and even Mastodon as well as Death. I feel as if Opeth does not have a bad album they have albums that are weaker than the rest imo but even the weak ones are still pretty good imo. Also music is subjective and I feel as if that statement applies to Opeth. Actually looking back on Porcupine Tree maybe I should give them another chance same with katatonia.

My favorite is and forever will be Blackwater Park! Such an amazing album. I love all Opeth, but I would have to say the earlier albums would be lower for me mainly b/c I’m a fan of the mixture between death metal and Prog. I have been enjoying the newer Opeth sound myself, but I do also miss those growls. I’ll always have the older albums to listen to for that and the new ones for when I’m more in a straightforward Prog mood. 🤘🏻

- 13 Heritage - 12 sorceress - 11 orchid - 10 morningrise - 9 pale communion - 8 my arms your hearse - 7 deliverance - 6 damnation - 5 watershed - 4 ghost reveries - 3 in cauda venenum - 2 still life - 1 blackwater park opeth are one of my top five bands (Dream theater, opeth, death, pink floyd, and rush), and I think 9th-1st place are all bonafide masterpieces. to anyone wondering why their newest record is so high, in cauda venenum is their most complete work in my opinion. everything fits together and flows perfectly. if I’m honest with myself, the top 3 are interchangeable. I was so blown away by it when it released that I bought it on vinyl within six hours of listening to it for the first time. it also has their best solos and lead work, as well as quite possibly the best atmosphere of any opeth record (including blackwater park). I listen to it ALL the way through top to bottom, or not at all.

I enjoyed this. You guys seem like cool dudes. I would have a somewhat different list, but I must say that I am really glad the two of you gave so much love to Watershed! PHENOMENAL album that has everything and is probably my favourite as well. Yet, I CANNOT agree with Pale communion being so disliked. How does one call that "uninspired"? I respectfully and utterly disagree. I mean, did you guys listen to "Faith in Others"??? It's one of their most beautiful songs and ballads ever written. Cusp of Eternity is exceptional too! The vocal harmonies all over this album are superb! And honestly, the lyrics are more relatable than perhaps any other Opeth album I can think of as a whole. The musicianship, especially the drumming, is fucking insane. And the Voice of Treason? Cool, but very repetitive. If anything, I'd say THAT song is the most uninspired. But regardless, long live Opeth!

I totally agree with you, I fucking love Pale Communion. I think PC and In Cauda Venenum are tied for my favorite of the post-Watershed years. I think Sorceress is actually their least inspired record. That record, while still enjoyable, kind of falls flat for me in comparison. I don't really care whether Opeth are heavy or not, what I care about is quality songwriting and musicianship and Pale Communion has that in spades.

For everyone missing metal Opeth, here's my favorite surrogates: Ikuinen Kaamos (listen to "Indoctrination of the lost"), Barren Earth ("Oriental Pyre"), Obsidian Tide ("Seven"), Gwynbleidd ("Nostalgia"), Iapetus ("My father, my god"). I have been looking for music to fill the gap Opeth left after Watershed for many years now. That's the best I have to offer.

Great lists and reviews of Opeth’s discog! Definitely one of my favorite bands of all time. Top 3 for sure. I’ll say I rank Pale Communion much higher personally, Heritage at 13. Top two are: 2-Deliverance and 1-My Arms, Your Hearse. So about Mikael’s vocals: this isn’t inside info, but I researched this and figured out that it seems like he damaged his growling vox. Several vical coaches said that’s exactly what they hear. In 2008 along with Watershed was Bloodbath’s Fathomless Mastery and Unblessing the Purity EP (Mikael’s best performance IMO). In interviews he stated that while recording Bloodbath’s vocals he got to the point of vomiting blood several times. I don’t remember which record(s) this happened but clearly he over exerts himself for that band. Late 2008, and 2009, I saw Opeth and watched live clips of them and noticed his deep growls taking a dive. If you watch live footage from 2001-2007, he has powerful and full delivery of lows and highs. This turned into a strained bark in late 2008 and beyond. Check out Bloodbath’s “Bloodbath Over Bloodstock” and Opeth’s live Royal Albert Hall albums and compare to “The Roundhouse Tapes” and “The Wacken Carnage”. You can clearly hear the difference in his death metal growls. 2011 brought Heritage, so it adds up. Now as of 2018/19, live clips I’ve seen sound a little better, so he is taking care of himself but he still lacks the depth at the lows and shrieking highs we all love. I could be wrong, and I also take into account that he does not have interest in writing more death metal, sticking with prog, and also the idea (a suggestion to me) that to improve his singing he has had to curb the growls a bit. Maybe he just lost that part of his voice. I dunno, but researching it with live clips, concerts I’ve been to, and thoughts from vocal coaches coupled with all the above and I think there is validity to my theory. His vocals weakened after 2008, he left Bloodbath, and I think the stylistic shift is too convenient of an excuse. I’m glad they still write killer music and seem to be getting better after each record, but I am positive we’ll never hear fresh death metal vocals in Opeth again. I do think and hope they can write something heavier even with sung vocals, like in “Hex Omega” and “Porcelain Heart”. The last two records had much heavier moments than the first two “prog era Opeth” records did. We’ll have to wait and see. Keep up the great reviews guys!

Necrotic Nick- I like the fact that he's at least embraced playing the older material live. The last couple of times I've seen them they've squeezed in Demon of the Fall, The Lotus Eaters, Ghost of Perdition and encored both times with Deliverance. Mostly, I just want some of the metal elements in the music to return which we did get sparingly in In Cauda Venenum. I thought that was a solid album. I'm glad you dug the video, man! More to come!

Good points. It's possible he did permanent damage near the end of his death vocals. I was never a huge fan of his vocal sounds on The Fathomless Mastery. I thought they sounded painful and not quite as full as he did in early 2000s. Maybe I don't like it because that album is like the death of his heavy voice. I saw them on Ghost Reveries tour in St. Louis (Sauget, IL) and it was incredible. Saw them next on Heritage tour and was super bored with their set choices, Katatonia opened and blew them off the stage. On Sorceress tour I enjoyed it quite a bit more. My Arms Your Hearse - Ghost Reveries will always be the golden age for me. I really missed Peter Lindgren as second guitarist when he left. So Roundhouse Tapes is a special jam! I never could get into Watershed as much as anything from the Peter Lindgren era. I'm not sure if Lindgren wrote all of his own parts but he had a definite style. Plus he does those other lead vocals on the chorus of Bleak!!!

I saw Opeth live in 2011 just days after they released Heritage…I wasn’t aware beforehand that there weren’t going to be any death metal songs played…after the show was over, I was livid…out of all the concerts I’ve ever been to, this is *easily* at the bottom

Deliverance is my favorite Opeth album, hands down. Also love Live At Sheperds Bush Empire, which came out in this period. Martin Lopez puts on such a thundering drum school...............I have no words. Mikael is in top form as are Peter, Mendez and I think Per Wiberg joined by this time, or was on the tour, I don't remember. Deliverance and then Ghost Reveries do it for me, along with My Arms Your Hearse. I really fell away by the time of Pale Communion and I was extremely disappointed seeing them live in Seattle on the Heritage tour. Katatonia was heavy and great, but Opeth just came off weakly.............to each their own I say. Thanks for the list.

1) Blackwater Park 2) Deliverance 3) Morningrise 4. Ghost Reveries 5) Still Life 6) My arms your Hearse 7) Damnation 8) Orchid And 1-6 are very close. Those albums are that good. I could change my mind on the top 3 from today to tomorrow. (Morningrise is incredibly underrated.) I couldn't get into the rest, sorry. Just moved too far from what I like and so I don't listen to those. I've tried many times, but it's just not my genre.

I don't mind if Opeth never releases another metal album because they gave us 8 melodic/progressive/ death metal masterpieces (all of which I own) before embarking on the second half of their musical journey. Also how do you even begin to top Watershed? That is like the most epic way for a band to bid farewell to that genre of music.

You know, Opeth was my first Death metal band. After discovering Dream Theater, I became a "proghead" and listened (and still do, if you notice my username and avatar lol) to a lot of 70s Prog Rock. So I eventually got into Opeth for the progressive stuff. Of course that ended up getting me to the old school death metal scene (Death being my favorite metal band henceforth). And when Opeth started doing prog rock of course I loved it. It's my jam. I guess my rank from worst to best would be... My Arms, Your Hearse (I rarely listen to it anymore, it never quite clicked with me) Watershed (another one that doesn't do it for me) Orchid Morningrise Heritage Sorceress Damnation Blackwater Park In Cauda Venenum Still Life Deliverance Pale Communion Ghost Reveries Pretty much all the albums from Blackwater Park to Ghost Reveries (on my list) are perfect to me. I listen to all of them equally, but I can definitely say that Ghost Reveries is my favorite of the "death metal" era and Pale Communion is my favorite of the current era.

@@floridabelle Yes, I'm not sure what to tell people about the growling hurdle. It's not a hurdle for me, I prefer it to match the music! My dad is the same way, he's always tip-toeing around metal lately the last decade after classic rock his whole life now getting into bands like Motorhead, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, stuff like that. Just can't do screaming, haha. Metal could all be instrumental and I'd probably still be here!

@@danjometaldread4497 Until I heard Opeth I couldn't listen to a song with growling. All the others my son tried to get me to listen to I still can't. Now he's trying to get me into In Flames, but the constant screaming the lyrics is a huge turn off. It's a shame too, because the music is really good. I just recently heard the band Be'lakor, and immediately became a fan. The growling isn't overpowering, and the music is so good that I've listened to all 4 albums a couple of times already. They'll have a 5th album out soon, so that's exciting. 🙂

@@floridabelle Cool! In Flames, Soilwork, Arch Enemy, and other melodic death metal are good for easing into death metal sounds. For good metal with clean vocals I would recommend Nevermore - Dead Heart in a Dead World and This Godless Endeavor and Symphony X - Paradise Lost and The Odyssey. Nevermore leans more melodic death on the music and classic heavy metal and Symphony X explores prog territory with power metal and symphonic metal.

Heritage is my favorite album by Opeth. I am so happy that they did that change from metal to more progressive rock. Being a metal head growing up I've left alot of that behind and gone towards, well... alot of other styles of music including progressive rock. Through the years I've gotten so tired of almost everything metal from the blatant aggression, to aggressive vocals to chugg chugg guitars, to drums sounding like type writers. I still listen to old school black metal but thats it basically. So, when Heritage came along it was perfect for me; bye bye growls, bye bye incoherent song structures, bye bye chugg chugg guitars.

I will add that as a professional drummee Funnily enough the hardest songs to play with Opeth aren't their heavier songs. You gotta give credits to songs like Eternal Rain will come for amazing drumming parts with great fills and time signatures. I love to play this song. I also agree about Watershed this album is perfect. Porcelain Heart main riff is one of my favorite riffs ever, and people sleeps on Burden which is also a balad that is so beautiful and emotional. Then you have the perfect heavy parts in Hessian Peel etc...
