Mikael Åkerfeldt is a brilliant songwriter. Amusingly, he's talked about how party of why he writes such long songs is he just doesn't know how to write short songs. One of the things I love about Opeth's songs is that they both stay in each section long enough to really feel it, but also evolve the piece as the song progresses, bringing you on a musical journey. God I love the organ solo in this piece.

I like this journey the 2 of you are taking. This coming from someone who used to play exclusively classical piano and then got a metal head boyfriend (now husband, 25 year and counting). So I went through this kind of myself, being blown away with some of the musicality involved with metal music. I was always told by my family that metal was just noise and not musical - boy, were they wrong. I appreciate both.

First time in the channel and I love it. I take it Judson is not a fan of DeathMetal vocals and you’re trying to ease him into Opeth. Honestly, I wouldn’t show him clean vocals set lists only. I think after this you introduce him to current ProgRock Opeth, something like “Strange Brew” or “Moon Above Sun Below” and then to their Death era with the classics from still life like “Godhead’s Lament”. I went back to your community vote on Opeth and saw “To Bid You Farewell” is on their, one of my absolute favorite songs, it’s not the most technical song out there so I’m interested how someone who is musically inclined will review it. Comment is getting long enough, but I really enjoy his Piano translations of the song. A pianist friend of mine played over Opeth’s “The Drapery Falls” intro and it was the most magical sound I’ve heard, I would be greatly appreciative to hear Judson take on it. Thank you!

My theory with Watershed is that, even if the band didn't really know it, the songwriting was about to change, moving into the prog rock stuff they do now, as basically every track on the album has a sudden idea and tone change, establishing itself just in time for it fade away and let the old tones take back over. I know Mikhael says he started writing Heritage as another death metal album so I don't think the change was foreseen, but the fact that there are so many rapid and sudden changes on Watershed make me think there was a deeper feeling in the studio for that album, something that was rising but not realized yet. Anyways, if you're into the idea of some more Opeth-likes, I HAVE to suggest Wilderun. They had one of my favourite albums from last year called "Epigone" but their crowning achievement thus far is their album "Veil of Imagination". That whole thing is a masterpiece. The tracks to check out from them are "The Unimaginable Zero Summer", "Woolgatherer" and "Far from Where Dreams Unfurl".

I would like to challenge your friend with "Master's Apprentices" from the Deliverence album. It's challenging to follow for its own sake. The song changes chords only twice, only to go back to the first one. If you're only judging a song by chords, you'll underrate this one. Yet, rhythmwise, constructionally, and lyrically, t's a completely inspiring experience.
