Lyrics
Let me taste
Let me feel
I need to know what you keep inside
No need to speak
Just let it be
Carry out this wish for me let nothing interfere
Rise to submission
I'm still beneath in the soil
Discard your clothes
Let loose you hair
We're intertwined forever and have always been
Say the word
And I'll depart
Upon your lips dwells nothing but the meaning of my cause
And so comes the dark
Vibrant as ever before
Flowers already withered
In this endless winter of souls
Outside in the park
The days move along
And nothing ever changes
They have nothing on us
And we've always knew
That nothing ever changes
Rise to submission
I'm still beneath in the soil
This is ours alone
Feeding of the warmth
Lured out from inside
Depending on the life blood
Silently
Whispering
Move in me and set me free
"Htaed otni yaw eht dael
Won resolc
Peels rof gnol
Gnivael dna
Yawa gnidaf
Tuohtiw Od Nac I Tahw
Em Gniwohs
Thgil Laerehte
Raeppasid Dna
Edaf Sruoloc
Ecnart Gnihtoos"

This song is about a demon possessing someone. He uses different tones in his voice to depict the demon, the narrator and the person being possessed. First part with the distorted growls (the demon lurking as if he was underneath), clean growls (as if the demon was on top persuading). The guitar solos that follow is the person being submitted/possesed. First aggressive solo (like fighting it) then more growls (the demon) convincing/persuading). Then light keyboard and soft part comes in as a feeling of being overcome and submitted by the demon and the clean vocals is the narrator depicting the scene of conversion. Then the aggressive nature of the demon takes completely over. *insert headbanging here* .....and then..... "Aaaaaaaaah" "Silently" "Aaaaaaaaaaah" "Whispering" "Aaaaaaaaah" "Move in me and set me free".. Is the final submission/total possession. Then the rest of the song "is it over??" is the feeling of being set free of the pain. First its silence, then echoes. I get a feeling of weightlessness from it as if I where a ghost that doesnt feel pain. :) Opeth is all about imagination and feeling. They're stories. Adventures. Picture yourself in the song and maybe you'll feel the music inside you....

If you can provide a coherent meaning for any one of their songs, I'll be be impressed. I should clarify: I love Opeth. They're my favourite band in fact. But let's not pretend lyrics are Mikael's strong suit. He's admitted he's not very good at lyrics and writes them as an afterthought.

Can anyone explain everything after 9:30? why is it there? why is it mostly silence? Why does it go for SO LONG? I feel like it taints an otherwise cool song, but maybe i just dont get it yet

It’s a verse from masters apprentices played backwards. “Soothing trance, colours fade and disappear” blah blah blah I can’t remember the rest.

Old analog supports like vinyl or cassettes have a fixed length so back then bands used the extra space to include all kinds of easter eggs like hidden tracks (hidden because you only get to hear it if you wait through the silent part and it is not listed on the cover) or messages in reverse like here.

I love the song's ending. It gives you the time to think about what you just listened. The beatiful reversed vocals of the end always give me goosebumps. I lost the count on how many times I've listened this album from start to finish, it's a moving experience. I sit in my living room and listen to the whole album from start to finish. And I always use my best speakers or my headphones. It's almost an spiritual experience (I'm not religious). Thank you Opeth for this masterpiece album.

I don’t understand why people complain about the ending. It’s the end of the album and it’s beautiful ambiance.
