"By the turnstile beckons a damsel fair The face of Melinda neath blackened hair No joy would flicker in her eyes Brooding sadness came to a rise Words would falter to atone Failure had passed the stepping stone She had sworn her vows to another This is when no-one will bother And conceded pain in crumbling mirth A harlot of God upon the earth Found where she sacrificed her ways That hollow love in her face Still I plotted to have her back The contentment that would fill the crack My soul released a fluttering sigh This day fell, the darkness nigh I took her by the hand to say All faith forever has been washed away I returned for you in great dismay Come with me, far away to stay Endlessly gazing in nocturnal prime She spoke of her vices and broke the rhyme But baffled herself with the final line My promise is made but my heart is thine"

I've known of Opeth, but I have not often listened to their music, however I found this song through Typeracer, and this is majestic, will have to listen more of their music, brings emotions to my eyes, how wonderful a sound so melancholic and whispering!

Hell yeah Peaceville! This whole album is one of my favorites of all time! It is a perfect mix of that eerie classical- folkish, softer sound mixed with death metal done in an evil and unique way. As for this song? I think it was one of the best ever written in the history of music alongside of The Drapery Falls.

It's a fantastic album, every one of Opeth's albums are phenomenal :) There's a remastered version of the cd, the original cd, and a vinyl of "Still Life'.

It seems like the melody is inspired by Bowie's version of "Wild Is the Wind"...or am I imagining things?

Probablemente exista una coincidencia armónica. De todos modos, el acorde con el que inician ambas canciones es un Am7/9, y es bieeen común.

Did he write this song for his daughter Melinda or did he name her after this song? I think the former is the actual scenario.

No he didn't! His daughter was born in 2003, while this song was written in 1999. He named his daughter Melinda just because he liked the name.

Good song, though I prefer the live version as I feel like the heavier part is too slow.

Same here! I got so used to the Roundhouse version that the heavy part drags on this original version. Kind of spoiled it for me!

Personally I think I like the slower pace, it gives it much emotion rather than just emphasis
