this is absolute wizardry - even the details in the playing are really close.

My favorite guitar tone of all time was on Ghost Reveries easily. Great vid!

Thanks so much for these Steven. Sounds killer! It's also very good to hear the ideology behind the different mixing choices. Video about how to avoid noise = yes.

I had been waiting for this kind of video for long. I like to confirm that you may sound aggressive but clear without a lot of gain, so you can eliminate much noise this way. I've always loved and enjoyed the tone of whole Ghost Reveries because of that.

Best video I've heard for Opeth tones on KZbin. Please make the noisy DI video please. This video alone is why I'm buying Neural DSP plugins 🙂

Yeah!!!! very interested in how to reduce noise on a DI. Absolute amazing video series... I hope you keep doing this band videos because people like me can get a lot out of Neural DSP amps and a good starting point to help people doing their own productions, like me jajajajaa.

Sounds great. I was just playing around with Nail the Mix -> Heir Apparent and your sound is on the spot. So now I have to get the Omega I guess? I got my tone using the last amp with Nolly plugin which still sounds fantastic for most of my mixes. Cheers.

Hey any tips on how to get a fatter, wide lead tone from the plugins? Whenever I try to record solos, they sound kinda thin even with the added reverb and delay. Thanks!
@TheRealStevenWard4 жыл бұрын
Depends on how you're dialing in the tone. I wouldn't cut a whole lot of low mids from the leads to start. Maybe go with a 57 and a 121 for the IR's. I also like to dial in the delay with the ping pong going and use the high and low pass filters on the delay a bit so it's just a pillow of sound underneath the lead. If you have the archetype: Nolly, you can dial in some cool delays between the pre and post delay. Dial in the first as a dotted quarter note and the post delay as a regular quarter note and you get this cool syncopated delay sound with it. Gotta be careful of the mix and the high and low pass filters to make sure your original tone is still clear. Hopefully this helps!

I'm comparing my D.I track to the Opeth one and are you using compression on the D.I? The low end is imense. Also I've tried Match Eqing my D.I but on the spectrum the low end doesn't match. ( just D.I no amp ) Any tips? Ozone 9 Match EQ Works perfectly. (But the 3000+ latency it adds mean I can't use it live ) But when I use a sweep from Voxengo Deconvolver to create an IR the EXTREME lows are all wrong when the IR is loaded. which probably means the rest of the signal can't be trusted either. which makes me think perhaps the low end is compressed in some way to bring it up more.

I feel like plug-ins always have a tough time really capturing the beef and sustain of a cranked and mic’d real live amp. The distorted guitars featured here come a little closer to what’s on the record but if you A/B them (even with a live rendition) they just don’t have the same body and depth of the real thing. And it’s even more noticeable on the clean guitar here (and something I’ve experienced myself when using plugins) - very minimal sustain and body with that static-y noise on the transients. Plug-ins always get close tonally but just sound like they’ve had some of the life sucked out of them. Always wondered why that’s the case. Maybe it’s just exceedingly difficult to recreate the pushing of air and the added depth that comes from really cranking an amp. I don’t mind using plugins for practicing or rough demos, but haven’t been able to bring myself to use them for a final studio recording. It’s always “close but no cigar” for me, but that’s “just like… my own opinion, man.” 😅
