Mikael is definitely one of the best songwriters in death metal history, prob just metal history in general tbh. Opeth along with mastodon have the best discogs in metal the last couple decades imo.

@@Zwodrey hearts alive is a very sweet long epic song of theirs. Mother puncher is a sick early mastodon song as well with just killer riffs. For more modern mastodon roots remain is a great one same with more than I can chew from their most recent album. The last baron is also another 10+ min epic that is a fan fav and considered one of their best

I think i was the same reaction than you the first time i heard Opeth for the first time, almost 2 years ago.. im 46 years old.."why i never heard them before".. since then i cannot stop discover his severals albums..

Welcome to Opeth! We are all glad that you boarded the Opeth train! Maybe second stop should be 'Deliverance' if you want to carry on in same style (newer albums are without vocal grawls, some albums have jazzy or 70's rock influences, some are acoustic...). Or you can stick to all-time-evergreen hits like 'The grand conjuration' or 'Harlekin forest'... I wish you years of pleasure discovering Opeth!

Their discography could be divided in to two major parts. Older progressive death metal and newer more of a progressive rock with touch of metal and no growls. Whilst I didn't like that much of their first newer style album, I think they have been better since and I do like both sides of Opeth, but they are quite different. They also have one older mellow album with no growls and mostly clean guitars, from their death metal years, called Damnation which is a very good album in my opinion and I still love to listen to that.

Ein weiterer für's Rabbithole Opeth :D Cool, dass du Sie entdeckt hast! Ich hab die damals auf der Prog Nation 2006 oder so das erste mal Live gesehen und kannte die davor überhaupt nicht. War von denen so angetan, dass ich mir einen Tag später erstmal die komplette Discographie gekauft und die nächsten Jahre rauf und runter gehört habe. Absolute Lieblingsband und unfassbar abwechslungsreich von Album zu Album! Es ist immer schwer da weitere Songs zum reinhören zu empfehlen, weil natürlich auch jeder seinen eigenen Favoriten hat und die Songs und Alben sich sehr im Stil unterscheiden... ich geb einfach mal eine Liste mit spontanen Vorschlägen: - Reverie/Harlequin Forest - Windowpane - Bleak - Deliverance Aber im Grunde sind alle auf ihre Weise klasse. Wenn du auf Konzeptalben stehst, lohnt sich auch mal "Still life" durchzuhören bspw. Ansonsten such dir irgendwas aus, was für dich gut klingt :D Bin persönlich nur kein allzugroßer Fan des aller erstel Albums, weil es noch ziemlich zu Beginn war auch Soundtechnisch... Apropros: Ich würde an deiner Stelle alle Songs zuerst in der Studio Version hören. Auch wenn die Live wirklich großartig und super nah dran sind, fehlt live doch noch die ein oder andere Nuance/Drum Fill/Ambient Sound/Extra Instrument manchmal, dass die "Stimmung" in den Songs den Feinschliff gibt! So genug gelabert... freue mich auf weitere Opeth Reactions! :D

@@Zwodrey Cool, freue mich schon, dir bei der Reise zuzuschauen😁 Ich würde die Liste übrigens noch gerne um "Burden" ergänzen. Aber im Grunde machst du auch nichts falsch, wenn du einfach ab ~My Arms, your Hearse oder Still Life alle Alben durch hörst. Haben wie gesagt sehr viel unterschiedliche Tracks, die sich auch unterschiedlich entfalten. Aber bitte mit reaction hören! 😂 Ich würde so gerne Opeth auch nochmal zum ersten Mal hören können... so reactions geben mir zumindest ein wenig das Gefühl das zu tun 😁

Next time opeth is in your area they’re a must see live band, easily one of the best live bands out there. Saw them with mastodon who’s another incredible band in like late 2021 or so and they sounded just perfect. Instrumentally live they’re just flawless as a unit and vocally Mikael is one of the best in metal. A truly all time great metal band in all aspects.
