May I ask what the purpose of quad tracking is, and how to pan the tracks when quad tracking
@Haxprocess6 ай бұрын
@Guitarsamuraislayer quad tracking is a common method used for "thickening up" your guitar sound; essentially giving the quitar more presence in the mix without having to boost volume or compression. Panning/ post effects on Quad tracking is all up to user preferences/ what suits the part. If I ever quad track, I like panning 2 guitars 100% left and right, and the the other 2 guitars about 75% left and right. Usually I'll far pan the lower registered rhythm parts while the upper register parts/ lead melodies will be on the 75% sides. that approach to panning is exactly what Opeth did on Still life, they would later experiment with different quad tracking techniques likes playing a Riff twice with lots of Distortion, and twice with very little Distortion (that's the technique used on watershed. For the music I compose myself though, I usually double track, just so things are more focused and immediate, and I only use quad tracking when there is a distanct multi layered section in the song.

I'm gonna use this as an addition to the tab to look at how it is played. Most of the tabs are inaccurate, but your playing seems to be right on point! Nice job, you've got a 40+ years old fan :D

You've demonstrated perfectly that the reason why this album and Mikael's songwriting are so great is because there's literally 4 guitars playing simultaneously and blending together to make an amazing wall of sound and harmony. Well done, man!

I don't smoke and I rarely do alcohol. But, Opeth is one of those bands that you listen in your rocking chair with a cigar in one hand and a glass of quality whiskey in the other. The all too familiar part starting from 2:56 did not disappoint, goosebumps like after taking five scoops of beta-alanine. Great job buddy, you have a new subscriber here!

Thanks a lot. I've been thinking about doing another one of these soon, but making the backing track myself this time instead of overlaying on the original track. I'll probably do Moonlapse Vertigo, but we'll see.

@@VignetteQ That’s a good idea. It’d for sure be the best live recording of moonlapse vertigo we have on KZbin. You sing too?
@VignetteQ3 жыл бұрын
@@tylerjacobson8012 Hell no I don't sing lol. Not sure what I'd do about vocals. Probably leave it instrumental. Maybe mimic some of the clean vocals on like a clean guitar, IDK.
@tylerjacobson80123 жыл бұрын
@@VignetteQ haha. Neither do I. Neither would I attempt mikaels vocals ever either. Do what you think is best. Moonlapse vertigo is such an interesting song sonically that you could do it as an instrumental and it’d still be awesome. It’s so dense with great riffs and amazing melodies that it could stand on its own without his vox. Can’t wait to hear it. Especially that opening when you’d jump in with Lingrens melody in the second part of the intro.

@VignetteQ4 жыл бұрын
I certainly plan to do that one. I was initially hoping to do the whole album by the end of the summer, but with how long these take + other projects that take priority for me at the moment, I doubt that will happen. Definitely want to get through the whole album eventually though. The Moor and Moonlapse are probably my favorites on the album, so I think I'm gonna aim to do those 2 by the end of the summer. After that, school and other stuff means IDK when I'll get to the others. Thanks for watching ^^
@weirddreams_fe4 жыл бұрын
@@VignetteQ Oh, I completly understand what you mean by that. Opeth songs are usually long and the process of recording sometimes you miss one note or two (happens to me). This is an amazing cover of a phenomenal song. I'm in awe of just how accurate you've got it down. Do you have any tips to avoid getting left hand cramps during the acoustic part beginning at 3:45? I've seen advice on other videos regarding playing barre chords more comfortably but I just can't seem to apply those techniques to half barre chords, especially when a second finger comes in to bar the three high strings. At that point is your index finger also barring the four strings behind it or just hitting the single note on the D string?
@VignetteQ2 жыл бұрын
Well I'm not sure if I can offer any special advice other than the typical stuff. Make sure your finger is as close to the fret as you can, try not to press any harder than you have to. Try seeing just how little pressure you can apply and still have the note ring out. Maybe try using some arm strength to fret the bar. Also examine how hard you are picking; the harder you pick, the more pressure you have to apply with your fretting hand to not have the note buzz out. With regard to when my third finger bars the high three strings in that moment, no my index finger is not barring the four strings behind it. Just the single note on the D string. No reason to apply all that pressure with my index finger needlessly there. Hope that helps!
