What? The Ring/Grudge remakes got their directing style from Japan? Nooooo. Watch the original and the remake. The look is pretty damn different. Only weeaboo Japanophiles will tell you that the original Japanese version is better. The American remake nailed a creepy look & tense tone that was completely lacking in the blandly shot original. There's a different between a low budget "natural" look like John Carpenter horror films, and "this looks like a flat soap opera" that Ringu resembled. Just...the idea that Gore Verbinksi is some artsy director styling films after Kurosawa and Shindo is absurd. And their "resident film expert" agreed with them?
