I think it was mentioned Bill was retired with a pension. From what little I understand, he had women coming and going from his place, sort of like an unofficial halfway house. He was probably lonely and had a thing about codependency. Over time though, the other women left and moved on. Eventually it was just Lady Di, who had no motivation to do anything or change her current living situation.

With beer consumption, it's only a matter of time before her pancreas becomes clogged and infected. The pain from Pancreatitis is so excruciating that you'd rather be a community bride in a Turkish prison rather than deal with it. Anyway, if it doesn't kill her, it's still the beginning of the end, unless she stops drinking, and even then she'll become a brittle diabetic.
