One thing i especially like about the carbon opinels in particular is the massive shower of sparks that the sharp corner on the spine will throw off of a ferro rod. It's particularly convenient that this can be accomplished with the blade locked closed.

I love my Opinel no 9. I work in a kitchen and I use it often for slicing tomatoes and breaking down cardboard. Beautiful simple edc knife

I've been using an Opinel No. 9 carbon steel for ages, and it has never let me down. It's easy to keep razor-sharp and a little drop of oil now and then will keep corrosion at bay.

Got mine while in the military in carbon steel. Everyone wondered why I was carrying a fugly knife. I have had and been carrying the same knife off and on since 1994. Blade is well tarnished and I soaked the whole knife in wood sealer when I got it, never had trouble opening it. Matter of fact I just took it out of hot water after soaking for one hour to clean it.

Got a No8 with an olive wood handle because I heard olive wood is extremely tough (also oh so pretty!). Those however only come with stainless steel blades but it is quality (Sandvik 12C27M) with opinel’s great finish.

Opinels are great knives. Very affordable. By the way you can take the lock off if you need to due to laws. It just becomes a true friction folder at that point. Just a tip. Great video! Subbed.

I have to disagree on the 2 hand open--I have been opening mine with one hand since I started carrying one in 1990--the fact I learned to open. the main blade on a Scout knife and a Schrader lock back made it easier

The wood handle can be difficult to clean. Maybe go with the outdoor version, a bit thicker steel (sadly partially serrated) but otherwise just as good.

You can open them with one hand, if you really needed to, but the method is a bit awkward, and repeatedly using this method will ding up the knife a bit. Basically, you hold the closed knife up near the lock, with the blade/groove on bottom, making sure your hand and fingers are not covering the blade/groove, and the tip of the blade facing away from you. Then, tap the end of the handle, the little tail (where the tip of the blade is nested) on a hard surface with just enough force that the blade will come out of the handle just a bit. Then, you simply place the tip of the blade on the most suitable surface, and pull back on the handle, which will lever the blade out and into the open position. At that point, it’s a simple matter to lock it one-handed. If the handle has swelled from moisture/humidity, I’m guessing this method may not work. But, otherwise, it’s good to know how, for those “just in case” moments in life. I read somewhere, or maybe saw it in a video, that this was how French farmers would open them one-handed. You can see why it would start to ding up the handle and blade. I’ve tried it, and it works. In a pinch, I’d certainly not hesitate to open it this way. But unless I had a damn good reason for beating on my knife, I’ll stick to using my free hand to open the blade.

if the handle is reasonably dry, the tap isn't needed--just pinch the blade and open it enough to catch the fishtail on your pants to open the rest of the way

If you make a review about a knife, please make sure you speak about the grind, in this case convex, quite rare among pocket knives. That's important because it will affect sharpening.

2:24 "...You are not going to be able to do this with one hand..." In fact, you tap the butt-end on any surface to release the blade from the handle. Anyone in France, and probably most of Europe, can open these with one hand. It isn't fast, like a switchblade, but it can be done.

A lot of time it is the laws that make a knife popular. Like our own folders with belt clips. The laws used to allow any state to carry. In Europe Shepherds and Ranchers used to carry Cememir Shepherd Folding Knife. I do like the handle. In New Zealand Svord Peasant Knife from New Zealand not sure of the whole story on that. But great blade.

depends what you need it for, this is a general use knife and nothing more. I have been using them for the last 30+ years and during that time I tried many thick blade knives which were not practical. If you want to pry use a shovel or pry bar, if you want to baton use an axe :)
