Boot environments are extremely convenient in pfSense. They allow for testing things providing a super-quick backout plan if the test is a failure. The way pfSense does the major upgrades on the boot environment (after creating a clone first) so the subsequent reboot doesn't take forever is quite nice too. I hope you are successful in getting this project into OPNsense... since I'm a recent convert from pfSense and miss it already ;)
