It's super quality work. But I dont why they don't wear gloves while handling such sensitive imax film. They are handling with bare hands without gloves while joining the reels . But some time they are wearing gloves as it shown in this video. But first guy dint.

@@NotMe-bk9oifirstly, I greatly appreciate that you said IMO. Imax dual laser certainly does look pretty darn brilliant. That’s very interesting that the sharpness was better in another cinema, perhaps it’s something to do with the kind of screen they are using? So much can go wrong with these screenings that it’s quite hard to tell these days.

Phenomenal and beautiful editing on your production. I'm a former 35-mm IATSE union projectionist in the U.S. I come from the days of carbon-arc lamps and 15-minute reels. I left the business around 1983, when automation and platters were introduced and closed out my career in automated booths. Comparing this to what I've experienced, it's the difference between the Model T to an Airbus A380. I especially liked the zig-zag splicing technique to increase the contact surface. Pure genius thinking. I will be seeing "Oppenheimer" in 3 days but I believe our local IMAX house does not run print and, I assume, is digital IMAX. With projection what it is these days, I have a hard time imagining other than a highly-skilled technician putting together this amount of film and especially given the expense and the pristine treatment is must receive. Kudos to you and my booth brother in Kensington!

Even tho I will only be able to see the regular 5 perf 70mm print, I am still really excited to see large format film being continued and hopefully having even more of a resurgence in the future! The theatre I will see it in is called Lichtburg (light castle) in Essen, Germany. It has a huge capacity seating over 1200 people and looks more like an opera house than a cinema with its 1930s styling and a huge balcony. It also has an actual stage and the biggest rolling screen in the whole of Europe. The stage originally was used for the orchestra back when silent films were still the norm. It was partially destroyed in WW2 and restored to its original appearance in the following years.

Another excellent video! I would be really interested to know how they archive these films - do they just leave them on the platters, or remove them and pack away completely? What happens to a film when it's no longer needed? Some of these venues will do re-runs of old Nolan films so it would be really tedious to do all of the splicing and preparation work again just to run The Dark Knight or Interstellar for 1 evening?

What I don't understand is why the reel is bigger, I know the area of each frame is larger, but shouldn't it have the same amount of frames as a 35mm movie reel? (love the vid btw!)
@boredtech
@boredtech Жыл бұрын
You are correct, 35mm film and 15/70 IMAX has same amount of frames, but… 35mm runs vertically and IMAX horizontally. 35mm frame height is 18.6mm and IMAX frame width is 70mm. It makes IMAX film reel almost four times longer than 35mm.

With all the news articles and videos coming out about Oppenheimer and 70mm film vs. IMAX digital, nobody is covering this question: Which is better-(1) Watching the 70mm film version from a “bad seat” (which are fairly plentiful in a typical theater of this type, be it too close or off to the side), or (2) Watching the film in an IMAX digital theater from a good seat in the house, which I suspect is easier to reserve.

Going to IMAX Theatre in the Indiana State Museum, in Indianapolis. Booked three weeks in advance but was only able to get seats quite a bit to the side. It's a two hour drive. Shame that more theatres don't show IMAX but it seems to be quite an inconvenient process, plus Nolan is the only one who goes through all the trouble of doing all the editing via an analog process so 70mm seems to be a dying breed. Hopefully in the future we will be able to make things like 8k projectors more standard.

It will most likely be years before I can watch Oppenheimer, since I won't be watching it in theatre. I'll have to wait until it is available for streaming or on commercial television. Still, an interesting video. Never knew about the assembly before now.

The closest 70mm IMAX theater by me is a good 7-8 hour drive. So, unfortunately I wont be seeing it anytime soon. HOWEVER, in a few weeks I'm traveling to Arizona to visit family, and I found out that there is one 70mm screen in Phoenix, which would be like an hour away from where I'm visiting. I'm gonna REALLY try to escape my family to go see this once in a lifetime viewing experience!

No 70mm IMAX theaters in germany anymore unfortunately (apart from Technik Mueseum Speyer but they don't show feature films). I'll be watching it at Schauburg in Karlsruhe where it's shown in regular 70mm (5/70) film and than again in either Leonberg IMAX or ZKM Imax Karsruhe for the correct aspect ratio.

I'm running the 35mm version. For platter cinemas, they shipped it on three large reels, 6,000 ft. each, so only needed to make two splices. Why oh why did they make you put together so many small lengths? Sadistic, and so many chances to make mistakes - we are careful, but we're only human.

Great video but you left out the Texas Spirit Theater IMAX in Austin, Texas at the Bullock Museum which is also doing a full run of Oppenheimer showings.

ugh...when I was much younger I used to work for a movie theater company in the US. I was eventually promoted to the office and I was taught how to do all of the film prep (build up/break down). It was my favorite part of that job.

Would have been insightful to get some basic questions answered, like why does the reel need to be recombined in the first place? Is it an issue of shipping, is it that projection systems are so different between cinemas, or some other reason?

IMAX usually ship the film assembled in large silver shipping cases. Each large case can hold approx 1hr of film on a wooden board as in this video. Due to time constraints imax send some prints out early to cinemas who still have the staff who can assemble them.

Awesome video - thank you so much for sharing. I am going to the BFI IMAX, London for 08:10 and then the 14:00 at The Ronson on Friday 21st July - only a few days to wait now! I'll be thinking of all those reels as I watch it.
