Despite Dunkirk being based on true events, many of the characters are fictional to my understanding, thus it is not a true biopic. Also note, IMAX film is acquired in 65mm and projected in 70mm. sometimes I use these terms interchangeably in the video.

2:15 Note: Tenet did not release online while it was in theaters, it went to streaming 8 months (May 1st, 2021) after its theatrical release (Sept. 3rd, 2020). Nolan was however pissed on other filmmakers behalf that all other WarnberBros theatrical releases of 2021 were released day of.

3:40 Note: Dunkirk was actually his first "based on a true story"; you could say that Oppenheimer was his first biopic. The lines are blurry as to whether Dunkirk was based on real people, but it was definitely based on a true story/historical event.

Are you serious? Your exact words were, "This is Nolan's first film based on a true story." That is a false statement. Dunkirk actually happened. The fact that characters in the film were fictional doesn't change that fact or make "Oppenheimer" his first film based on a true story. Nearly every single biopic has fictional characters in it, often several real people combined into one character in the film, or scenes that were fictionalized. Ask Ron Howard about that.

Audiences want fresh stories like this, I’m convinced of that. The problem is that the industry has become convinced any film grossing less than $1 billion is a failure. This leaves little space for original stories, biopics, indies… and pretty much any project that isn’t guaranteed to be a mega-earner. I hope that incredible filmmakers like Christopher Nolan can lead the charge to reset cinema to the way it should be.

For me, "Dunkirk" was Nolan's first big foray into real world events. The movie shines a light on the divergence between story telling and film making that can periodically happen with some directors. Nolan has such an inclination and he seems to be leaning into it. In the case of "Dunkirk", it was a beautifully realized cinematic chronicle. Light on story. The use of IMAX for "Oppenheimer" tends to suggest the movie leans toward a cinematic chronicling.

I think the people that didn't "get" Dunkirk went into the movie expecting a run of the mill WW2 movie and didn't know much about Nolan as a filmmaker. They expected all the cheesy dude showing up to the girls house holding flowers in uniform before he leaves, the normandy beach stuff, getting a draft letter etc. type of scenes that are in every WW2 movie. Nolan plays with the concept of time in almost all of his films. Dunkirk was a WW2 movie done in his style with this idea. It showed multiple characters timelines all intersecting into 1 central event. Showing how ALL these people, civilian and soldier, all collaborated to leave their mark on time for the greater good. It was a WW2 movie done in his style of storytelling with his signature time play mechanic involved. It was ambitious. I like it for what it was but it's far from my favorite movie of his. I just see a lot of people who seem confused by what actually happened in the movie lol

For the naysayers in the comments that say this is "just a biopic", the story of Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project is a story that deserves to be told and retold. It is a story that is of huge historical significance, and contains multiple parables and lessons that have great potential consequence for the future of humankind that a wider (and younger) audience needs to take to heart. My hope is that Nolan tells the story with fidelity and appropriate emotion, without overly relying on "artistic license".

This was such a complex nuanced series of events and ultimately resulted in both one of the most profound but also destructive creations in the history of our species. So I must disagree... Seabiscuit wasn't HUGE... it was a very good movie, I LOVED it... but it wasn't hugely popular. Check the box office numbers. And I also disagree that it wouldn't work in today's climate because of how theatres only do superheroes and disney now. Just not so, lots of movies are released every year that aren't superheroes. They just don't get all the media attention as the "big" films.

4:54 Hard Disagree! We absolutely need more funding for animated films. It's high time we stop treating animation as a genre or something just for kids, recent films like ATSV, Puss in Boots 2, Pinocchio, and upcoming Miyazaki's last film (How do you live) clearly show how much potential there is in animation. Of course there are some stale Disney remakes or Pixar making similar films just to make money, but that's exactly why we need more people to watch good animated films and take them seriously.

I'm hyped for so many reasons. The fact that Nolan is returning to a narrative driven story - the last of which was Memento with Guy Pierce - means he will be invigorated to excel by refreshing his skills. I'm also hyped for the fact that I believe this film - with its mixture of strong performances and special effects, will redirect Hollywood to the power of good storytelling in biographical and other forms, away from the Superhero genre that Nolan himself helped to spawn with the Dark Knight in 2005. Considering all this, he truly will be remembered as one of the directorial greats of all time for his impact on the industry.

Considering Dunkirk did $500m, I'm going to guess this one has a worldwide gross of about $800m+. Because you have the combination of spectacle, having to see it on the big screen plus meaning and history which people are craving and this film will definitely bring out the older folks en masse to the cinemas. It will also probably nominated for 10+ Academy Awards. I mean there's literally no way this does not get nominated for Best director, Best Male lead, Best cinematography and best sound for starters. I say that having not seen it just trailers for it. What's cool about this is the studios will realize there's a massive audience for intelligent art if it's done well

Funnily enough it was Interstellar that hit closest to meaningful art for me. I think the setting of the story matters less than the meaning the writer attaches to it. I've been through autobiographies and felt nothing, and have been through pure made up fantasy/sci-fi and have come away with a meaningful perspective change. It's a matter of someone caring about the art more than the money it will make them, and I think Nolan falls firmly into that category, even if he's had to make it work within systems that fight against those principles. Can't wait to see the film.

I used to think that you couldn't meet or exceed the experience you get in a real theatre but when my friend invited me to try out their 83" LG C2 and Klipsch home theatre system, I honestly thought that it exceeded mainstream theatre in terms of image quality. The reduced viewing distance for the same image resolution and the quality of the contrast and black handling really brought out something that I hadn't experienced before. I had personally never enjoyed the 'group' experience of a theatre and don't believe it should always be part of a film so that was an added bonus. The only remaining factor was subsonics and how audio in the sub range should be 'felt', not heard. That was something very difficult to get right in a home theatre experience but somehow (not sure on their exact setup) they achieved that in the setup they had that day. It certainly seems that regular 2K/4K DCI movies are no longer reliant on projected/theatre release to experience them in reference quality. However just technically speaking, IMAX is a leap beyond that again, so i'll certainly be going to an IMAX theatre for Oppenheimer. On the story front, I can definitely see a move to more 'grounded' films, especially as we start to see generative content beginning to saturate that fantasy space at a much higher rate. Eventually, with too much of that saturation, audiences will begin to value the opposite more. But that 'opposite' must also be well done- so it'll rely on folks like Nolan and his team to set the bar on how real stories can be told well.

@jonny_graham
@jonny_graham Жыл бұрын
@@johannassburg To be honest, it's not just a black level thing so much either (though it certainly helps). The colour volume you can achieve above black and below white the with emitted light vs reflected light is something else on OLEDs. The only thing I would be curious to see would be a theatrical space using LED walls. The viewing distance would allow much larger LEDs to be used and could certainly open a way to upgrade the technology used in large space viewings- allowing you to still take advantage of those large diameter subwoofers and speakers in expensive configurations.

It was my privilege to work with Grahame, Phyllis, and the Shaw brothers when they flew IMAX cameras on the Space Shuttle. I worked in Payloads, so the nuts and bolts of how the crew took a shot went through me. One of my fondest memories was of Grahame calling me over the voice loops, and asking if we could get a horizon-to-horizon shot, either over Florida or the Caribbean. I moved heaven and earth to make it happen, and the crew got the shot. You can see it in the opening scene of Blue Planet. As a Marvel fan, I wanted something like the Infinity Stone saga to get to the big screen long before Marvel Phase I happened. What I DIDN'T want was for that franchise to suck all the air out of the room, to the detriment of being able to make wonderful "little" movies like Friedman's Sorcerer, or John Carpenter's Thing, or any of a number of great movies that don't have "people in tights". I have no faith that Oppenheimer can fix everything that wrong with Hollywood right now, but it's a good step in the right direction. As much as you're interested that it tells a real-life personal story, I'm interested in the fact that films like that can educate people on important subjects in a way that they just can't get in science or history class, or on cable channels that no longer teach history or science but pretend to.

I'm absolutely stoked to watch Oppenheimer. I've always been fascinated with WWII films and the overall history surrounding the science of the Atomic Era. The hype for this film is legitimate, but I think some of it is misplaced. What sets Oppenheimer apart is Christopher Nolan and what is going to save Hollywood is more filmmakers like him. Nolan's departure from Warner Bro. after Tennent is a display of his commitment to, not just making a film, but how a film is experienced. Hollywood needs more filmmakers like that - people who are unwilling to compromise their vision. Oppenheimer will be beautiful and introduce us to some elements of filming and IMAX that we haven't seen before. But Dunkirk was also shot in 65mm film (partially IMAX film) and, to an extent, followed real world events or at least respected practical limitations and accuracies of the Dunkirk evacuation. Dunkirk had a 157 day release window before digital release and is the highest grossing WWII film of all time. Only 25 theaters in North America will show Oppenheimer in 70mm. So most people are not going to see it in its most immersive format. Plus IMAX, though visually spectacular, lags behind Dolby Atmos in terms of audio immersion - 12 channels as opposed to 64. Not that Oppenheimer won't be a visual powerhouse, but all the technical and storytelling advancements of this film are nothing without the commitment and vision of Nolan.

The chain reaction being talked about in this video was actually somewhat of a miscalculation by Oppenheimer as it is almost impossible with the amount of space given to the bomb itself, many scientists had also written papers after the testing of the bomb to disprove the math Oppenheimer had done saying that there was a small chance to be self sustaining to cause a chain reaction.

Unfortunately I will never have the time to see that until after the 100 days with my work schedule lol. While I do understand the sentiment of seeing a film in theaters, streaming st home with a more intimate setup works fine for me as well. These days, I tend to have an issue with looking up at a big screen and staying awake in a theater that uses those big reclining seats. Went with my partner to watch the Mario movie and we both fell asleep for most of the film, I fell asleep during the slower part of Little Mermaid before it picked back up again and fought off heavy eyelids during Infinity Pools and Beau is Afraid. It doesn't matter how interesting the film is, I can't be too comfortable in the dark lol.

@@normandy2501 there are a few filmmakers I’ll bend over backwards to see their film in theaters: Chris Nolan, Tom Cruise (Maverick was better on the big screen), and Quentian Tarantino. And as much as I love the theatre seating, I’m prone to to doze off as well.

This aspect of history has been a fascination of mine for 35yrs. I don't expect to learn anything new from the filem but I anticiapate seeing a new rendering of the story in blazing cutting edge visual standards. ANd a lot of people learning a lot at the same time is cool, too. As I have gained mosre and more access to more and more content, I find myself watching and reqtching more and more OLD content. Having something new to look forward to is a refreshing treat. A feeling I haven't felt very often in years ... a decade?

I believe in absolutely every word you said. 100% agreement. I just worry that you might be wrong. I'm not exactly seeing a lot of hype and excitement for this film so who knows if it will be a box office success. We really need to be, and we need it to do the same thing Top Gun Maverick did. I really want IMAX to keep pushing film too and if anything even consider putting the film projectors back into some of their theatres, but that's not gonna happen now unless Oppenheimer absolutely dominates box office over summer.
@derred723

I think he's flat wrong. Not that the film will be bad but I think film journlists, critics, lovers of indie, film "snobs" drastically misjudge the film audience. They think because they don't like superhero movies or want something else that the majority of the box office does too. When the reality is if it's a good (in the eyes of say moviegoers 13-50) superhero/star wars/animated/sequel to something/animated film it's gonna do good numbers. I have to laugh when people forget that all these 50 year olds grew up on star wars, 80s action movies, playing with transformers, & where in college when the first fast and the furious hit. They love a good movie but that doesn't mean they dislike Star Trek, Star Wars, another Batman, another over the top Fast and Furious, movie. And the difference is they (we) go see a lot more movies. They tout IMAX on this but what a lot of people REALLY want i max for is action movies, the same ones the snobs hate. The Batmans, The Mission Impossibles, The Endgames, The Avatars! Hell the intro of Nolan's own superhero film The Dark Knight is famously shot in Imax. But also Imax costs a lot more and given the already absurd price of movies and inflation hurting everyone, well many people would rather see on a normal screen for cheaper or even wait til it's cheaper on a streaming service.

I haven't been out much in public venues since Covid began, even now, so I am absolutely planning on getting to a theater to see this when it opens. We don't have an IMAX theater nearby, so I'm hoping it will be shown in the largest theater in our area. We definitely need more biographical movies to be made, and more science-oriented ones as well. Thank you Christopher Nolan!

I think it goes beyond Oppenheimer. For the first time since i don't remember when 3 big movies will be released by 3 big directors in the same year. Two long drama and one long sci-fi. They all feel like blockbuster movies with outstanding cinematography and outstanding directing. Oppenheimer, Dune Part 2 and Killers of the Flower Moon. I've not see that in a long long long time. Outside of sequels, marvel, reboots, prequels and DC most of the other movies released in the last 10-15 years or so are independent and or low budget with no marketing to push them. It's so strange to see this kind of quality being marketed and financed it's like travelling back in the 90ies.

First, thanks for this video, it is increasing my anticipation for seeing this movie in IMAX! Very hyped! Very excited to see what Nolan will do with this. I guess I have a bit of history, having served on ballistic missile submarines (yes, we sleep between the nuclear missile silos), worked in the nuclear power industry...and yes, I have been to the Trinity site (open to the public 2 days every year, good luck with the crowds if you are just now thinking of going!). Currently about 2/3 finished with "American Prometheus", and agree, a great though deep read. And, I expect this will also be "cinematic", with western vistas, compelling characters, the unspeakable terror witnessing the bomb testing (although not as completely unworldly as the videos of the hydrogen bomb tests, God help us!) and told in a visually compelling way, and am very excited about the new tech deployed in the filming. With the vast improvements of home theater in the last 10-20 years, I often wait for a 4k release (physical media, please!) to watch at home, but there are "must see in theater" movies, and this is one! I will have to delay seeing in theaters for a couple weeks after it is released...because I will be attending a Navy reunion with my submarine crew, but definitely going to see in theaters in IMAX! (and purchasing the 4k release when available)

Your life experiences are definitely fascinating! It must be thrilling to see a high end, cinematic piece actually faithful to the very birth of all of it. I feel like sometimes we forget how insane the real world is with all this fictional entertainment fed to us. Good writers make the stakes in these stories feel real, and yet there are stories untold where the stakes IS the real world ee ACTUALLY live in.

Don't get me wrong, I'm getting sick of all the Marvel stuff at the moment too, and I completely understand your point of view as a Doc filmmaker to want to see more "real life" and "grounded" stories as that's what you like more, but I wouldn't say that it's a bad thing at all that the top 10 films are fictional/sci-fi/fantasy etc. most of the time. I think it speaks to the fact that reality as a whole, well it just suck. People are inherently evil and selfish, we are always at war with ourselves, we can't afford to live anymore with an average lifestyle and average wage, and these are just examples without even mentioning those in third world countries who are born into suffering. For me, cinema has always been an escape from the real world. It would be the place I would come to forget about the blind hatred people exude on one another, about the fact that the council has stung me with another fine for no real reason that can't be contested meaning I may not make rent next month, about the fact that we are on the brink of yet another world altering war. And it would allow me to immerse myself in this amazing, fantastical, wonderous universe, that I know doesn't exist, but still brings me comfort instead of the constant anxiety I feel at all other times. I know real stories are important to tell to help shape our world and better our cultures, but it would be very ignorant to say that fiction isn't just as important, because it really really is. My only gripe was that when you said that this would "save cinema" or anything along the lines of "real stories being better", it sounded very "my opinion is a fact", which obviously is not true for anyone. Both types of stories are just as important as the other, and both need to be kept alive in the theatres 💙📽

I totally understand your point of view and to the individual, this is a wonderful thing that cinema can do. At the same time I fear that when cinema is too focused on escapism it's reduced to something that numbs the pain, something that makes us bear a reality we should rather improve. I wish it could play a role in fixing the issues instead of only distracting us from them. And that doesn't mean I want a dreadfully depressing kind of cinema, but a kind of cinema that inspires hope and confidence.
@nathanmountainproductions
@nathanmountainproductions Жыл бұрын
@@dahterrasse I completely get your point, and you've hit the nail on the head. That's pretty much what I meant, I don't think we should be leaning one way or the other, I think we need both truly distracting and escapism styled entertainment, as well as films that are true to reality and focus on real issues in the world that need to be addressed. We need the best of both and that would be cinema at it's most perfect.
