A lot of people don’t know this: they weren’t sure if the atmosphere of the planet would ignite when the bomb was tested.

In the IMAX-trailer for the film, Oppenheimer asks Einstein "But what happens if the chain reaction doesn't stop?" and Einstein answers "It would ignite the atmosphere".

"The chances are near zero." In fact, the calculated and recalculated figure was 1/3 000 000. And that would require Deuterium concentrations tens of thousands of times higher than actually present in the ocean.

The historian who wrote the book "Hunting Hitler’s Nukes" included in it documents the allies and Soviets found that suggested London and New York were the targets had they achieved nuclear capability. They wanted to mount a warhead on their V2 rockets. The feasibility of that actually working is probably unlikely, but nevertheless the threat was there.

Geez, that sounds exactly like the plot in the Amazon Alt-History book to TV series adaptation, The Man in the High Castle.

2 bombs were required, in order for the Japanese government to understand that the USA had this capability and could repeat it. The US had learned from the previous 3 years of war that the Japanese military would rather die than surrender. And the Japenese weaponised this at Saipan and Okinawa, thousands of Japanese civilians comitted suicide, urged on by propaganda. On top of all this, the Japanese adopted kamikaze tactics, which were brutally effective. Wasteful but effective. The US planned to invade Kyushu in November 45 and the main Island in March 46. But the US expected 600,000 US casulaties, and 3 million Japanese casulaties. The 2 bombs were brutal but convinced Japan to surrender, and saved several million lives.
@Feargal011
@Feargal011 Жыл бұрын
The brutality of Japanese soldiers and their suicidal way of fighting genuinely frightened US military leadership. However, ther are other motives at play. One particular reason was Stalin: at Yalta in February 1945, Stalin made a commitment to enter the war against Japan no later than three months after Germany's surrender. The deadline was August 9, and the US military and Truman were well awaer the Soviets were massing over one million soldiers on the border with occupied Manchuria, ready to flood across Manchuria, Korea and invade Japan. Truman was determined Stalin would not repeat the 'Iron Curtain' in post-war Japan, so any means to force Japan to surrender were used. Although the atomic bombs were horrific, the USAAF inflicted worse on Japanese cities using conventional (firebombing) techniques. The Tokyo mass bombing in March 1945 killed up to 140 000 people, most of whom were civilians and destroyed a greater area than either of the atomic bombs.The use of the atomic bombs followed the continued devastation caused by mass bombing. The USAAF estimated Japan would have no cities worth mass bombing left by October 1945. The loss of industry and civilian lives convinced the Japanese people that Americans were monsters, capable of any atrocity against them. Jaoan's Cabinet met on 9 August 1945, to try to resolve the conflict between the military, who wanted to keep fighting, and the 'Peace Party' led by Togo to find a way to surrender while maintaining the position of the Emperor. That meeting face twin shocks: the Soviets had declared war on Japan and broken through the Japanese defence lines in Manchuria and the second atomic bomb had been dropped on Nagasaki. The Soviet entry into the war sealed the fate of any military force on mainland Asia and the militarists knew it, whether every Japanese city was consumed in some ritual suicide. It is a peculiar American myth that the atomic bombs ALONE persuaded Japan to surrender. It is also far to easy to ignore the use of the atomic bombs to convince Stalin not to try any military adventure that could bring US and Soviet forces into conflict.

I'll be very pleased if it makes at least $500M worldwide. (For reference, Dunkirk grossed $527M). Oppenheimer needs $400M+ to break even, so I hope those who do see it in theaters splurge to watch it in IMAX once (or twice!) The **extremely** stacked cast should help with casual moviegoers, though

No. "Oppenheimer" won't yield 1 billion USD in the box office. Despite the Nolan name, most people are attention deficit in the extreme and have been force-fed with ADD "cinema" for the past decade, and they have unwittingly assented to this neurological rewiring. Thus, their brains have been injured precipitously beyond repair, when it comes to appreciating slow burn intellectual historical epics like this. This is why so many demographics are consuming TikTok, Twitter and KZbin shorts. Most people are brought up in a society where they do not have enough time to absorb deep context. Mostly, because of economical reasons, as the "Uberization" of the world economy has rendered less "leisure time" for most workers. So many people have to work more than 1 job to be able to afford living. But they then can't actually be "living" in any meaningful sense of the word. But, disconnected from popular yield, is it gonna be great? Yes, it's gonna be Great.

Definitely agree, most people's attention spans are so incredibly small, it's actually worrying. Reading was almost all we had as kids, but it's not that same anymore. How many kids read more than 5 books a year?? Shocking stuff.

"War is war" is a glib statement, the trailer had made a nuanced point that Oppenheimer had given humanity the ability to destroy itself, something that had never occurred in 6000 years of the history of organised warfare. The Atomic bomb was the culmination of over 200 years of industry, technology and science in warfare.

Glad you liked our reactions, and we appreciate the recommendations. When we get excited, we do make noise: some people oversell it and some people undersell it; we just do what we usually do. This reaction was an intense one, sometimes our reactions can be very plain. It all depends on what we are reacting to. We have given some thought to full film reactions, it is a bit difficult for youtube, more likely to happen on a different platform. It's something we're thinking over. - nonsensei
