What I like about the non linear storytelling is its not just done for fun. The story is about Strauss' confirmation hearing, which is mostly just them telling the story of Oppenheimer's hearing, a story which is then mostly them reviewing Oppenheimers life and building of the bomb. It's literally a story of a story of a story, completely organically created and unfolding at the same time, which requires the non linear story arcs. Incredible script writing.

This film is epic on several levels. The writing was epic. The dialogue, the use of the camera to highlight dialogue and that last line, which was probably the most iconic piece of film writing I have ever witnessed, the hanging idea that has yet to be fulfilled, that their creation will eventually destroy the world. Wow. Then there was the acting. I think Nolan just cut these actors loose and let them bring it. I have seen films where the cast was extremely talented, but in this case I felt like everyone who had a speaking part deserves an Oscar. But mostly I appreciated the characters. Almost everyone knows that Oppenheimer led the team that made the atomic bomb, but most couldn’t tell you much about him. Nolan and Murphy brought Oppenheimer to life and reintroduced him to the world. This one is epic! Great reaction Jax. I wish you had more films like this to react to.

Re: Niels Bohr and the poisoned apple: I've not seen anyone comment on Oppie's clever explanation for preventing Bohr from eating the fruit: he says 'wormhole', which both suggests that the apple has been infiltrated by a worm and is therefore contaminated (it is!) and also refers to a hypothetical shortcut between widely separated regions of space-time, an idea that both theoretical physicists would be familiar with.

Scientists like Oppenheimer, Einstein, Marie Curie etc... they were celebrities in the decades leading up to ww2. The public was fascinated with what science was promising and delivering by and large. 8n the preceding 30 years to ww2 we saw the advent of electrification, global communications via the telephone and radio, heavier than air flight, the birth of television, radar and a whole host of other wonders we still depend on to this day. But after the atomic bombings of hiroshima and Nagasaki the public then saw what happens when like Ian Malcom from jurassic Park said "these Scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should" and the aftermath scared the hell out of them. Throw in the ever present threat of annihilation once both the US & SOVIETS got functioning thermonuclear aka hydrogen bombs and you start to see why we haven't had any rock star physicysts since. Steven hawking was a magnificent Scientist in every measure but his work wouldn't result in any super weapons being built unless someone figures out how to create a black hole and here's hoping that's just sci fi. But the era before nukes was rapid discovery and the era after sees the physics community retreat into studying obscure and safe problems with little practical application.

I can't believe one of the major criticism's of this movie is that it got boring after the Manhattan Project, I found the Oppie vs Strauss arc equally captivating, if not more. From using bureaucracy as a tool behind doors to bring down the most celebrated person of your time to the effect or rather the lack of effect nuclear weapons had on mankind desire for war, this movie stayed with me for quite a few weeks especially the closing conversation between Oppie and Einstein. Nolan knows how to end a movie. Interstellar. Oppenheimer. Dark Knight trilogy. Dude's a menace. I also find so interesting the hatred Strauss had for Oppie from mostly a fake narrative that he had built up, you never know how some people perceive you. How one's meaningless words can be the other's driving force.

Nolan made a huge mistake not using CGI for the nuclear explosion. The gasoline explosion looked NOTHING like a real nuke.

I agree and disagree with you. The first few seconds of a nuclear explosion is prismatic (best term I can come up with). I was equally disappointed that this wasn't shown. But after that it is the atmosphere burning which very much looks like gasoline burning. If you look you can find color footage of trinity, it looks just like the movie. In fact most footage doesn't show the prismatic effect cause it's so bright it's just white on film. I would love to give some links but KZbin deletes comments with any links, even KZbin links.
