You don't need to touch your chest on flat bench unless you're competing in powerlifting. For casual bodybuilding, lowering the bar until your triceps are parallel with the floor, or until the bar is a few inches above your chest is plenty. Going any lower just risks shoulder injury, especially if you've injured it before. Just play it safe and do whatever doesn't cause you pain.

Not really. Going full range of motion is beneficial in the long run for flexibility and function. As long as he's keeping his arms tucked and doing suicide grips on lower weights he's going to reduce the strain on his shoulders anyways.

You have no idea what you're talking about at all. As someone who has been a personal trainer for nearly 6 years, what you're saying doesn't make sense. The only reason your delts would be put under enough tension to tear or cause injury would be if your form was bad. Keeping your elbows tucked like you should be takes nearly all of the stress off of the anterior delt and puts it on your long and lateral heads of your tricep. If you're feeling shoulder strain while benching, you have bad form. Not to mention anything under your max you should be using false grip for anyways if you're worried about shoulder injury. And yes, flexibility will come if you use proper form which in turn increases functionality and strength. It creates stronger fibers throughout your tendons and muscle as they recover.

You basically just said "Yeah there is stress on your shoulders by touching chest but you can minimize it with perfect form". My whole point is that the risk is not worth it, specifically for Scump who has already injured his shoulder. Bench press is notorious for fucking up people's shoulders. Even with perfect form it still stresses them and still risks injury that could otherwise be avoided by simply pressing the bar back up before it hits your chest. The risks far outweigh the benefits.
